My girlfriend and I visited Honduras recently on a vacation. While there we decided to visit the archaeological ruins of Copan. We had not arranged for a place to stay ahead of time, but as we are more of the adventurous type, we thought we would look around town upon our arrival to see which of the numerous hotels would meet our aesthetic and romantic notions of what an ideal place should be, and it didn’t take us long to find Terramaya. Terramaya, which is run by a New Yorker ex-pat and his Honduran wife who were great hosts, is conveniently situated just two and half blocks from the town park and all restaurants, cafes and shops. The hotel has spectacular views overlooking the picturesque town of Copan, part of the Ruins and the surrounding mountains. If you’re an early bird the best part of this view is catching the magnificent sunrise from the private balcony while swinging on the beautifully embroidered hammock. The whole place has a simple yet elegant architecture, from the breezy French doors to the high wood paneled ceilings with exposed wood beams. Our room, we had one of the second floor ones overlooking the mountains rather than one of first floor rooms that have their own private gardens, had a Queen bed, bedside table and plenty of space to hang clothes. The bathroom had large, clean showers with really good hot and cold water pressure and lots of counter space. The hardwood shutters over the windows are a lovely touch, giving one the choice to keep the shutters open allowing the room to fill with plenty of natural light or closed to darken the room for sleeping. There is a/c in the room but it was hardly needed especially during the evening hours since it gets pretty cool. There’s an exquisite terraced garden with plenty of colorful tropical blossoms and many varieties of tropical plants. It is the perfect place to sit down and read a good book or catch up on news via the free wireless internet in the afternoons before heading out for dinner. Though we only spent a week here we easily felt like we could have stayed for a lot longer.
Thanks Howard and Angela for a great experience!

I stayed at the Terramaya for three nights and have never had a better hotel experience -- including in the States. The rooms are beautiful, airy, bright and clean. The furniture is all handmade locally and the scent of fresh-cut wood lingers. There's a large sturdy desk where I set up my computer and checked email, etc., with a super fast hard-wired connection (there's wireless, too). If you need to get work done, this is definitely the place to do it. There's also night tables and reading lamps on either side of the bed and a beautifully crafted wardrobe for clothes. Through the French doors in the room I stayed is a private garden patio, with local plants and a relaxing hammock. I took more than one nap here.

The bathrooms are modern looking, with nifty light fixtures, hot water (not an electric "ducha" but hot water heater), and great water pressure. This is one of the best showers I've taken in Copan. Plans are in the works for a generator (i.e., electricity when the rest of the town is out). Again, more than anything, the bathrooms are super clean and fresh.

It is obvious that the lobby and architecture of the entire hotel was planned meticulously. Every detail has been considered and defined. It is essentially postmodern, with a mixture of styles ranging from colonial (wooden ceiling beams) to Copanec (teja roofs, pila) to modern (light fixtures, granite counter tops). It's located only two blocks away from the town square and heart of the restaurant/shopping district. You won't find another place quite as serene and peaceful so close to the downtown.

The two best parts of the Terramaya are the downstairs outdoor patio and the upstairs balcony. On the first level there is an outdoor patio with tables set up for breakfast (delicious, as always). From this location you can see the entire eastern facade of the Copan Valley, which made me feel humbled and grateful to be in this world, every single time I looked out. Walking into the garden area from the patio are various plants and fruit trees, a fountain, a massage pavilion and an outdoor rain forest shower. The pavilion is secluded and magical, framed by white curtains and flowers. Afterward it was lovely to take a shower outdoors, feeling totally relaxed and fulfilled by nature.

The view from the outdoor patio is only bested by the breathtaking vista from the second floor balconies. If you have the opportunity to stay in one of these rooms, do so without hesitation. It is the most awe-inspiring view I have ever witnessed in Copan, and I have been visiting since 2005. Wake up early and witness the sun rise in the saddle of the eastern horizon; or stay up late and have a few beers gazing at the stars. There's nothing better, believe you me.

And last (but certainly not least), the owners Howard and Angela are two of the friendliest and most helpful people I have ever met in Copan. They are lovely and want to make sure your stay is nothing but the best. If you want to experience everything Copan has to offer, the Terramaya is definitely the place to stay.
