My girlfriend and I visited Honduras recently on a vacation. While there we decided to visit the archaeological ruins of Copan. We had not arranged for a place to stay ahead of time, but as we are more of the adventurous type, we thought we would look around town upon our arrival to see which of the numerous hotels would meet our aesthetic and romantic notions of what an ideal place should be, and it didn’t take us long to find Terramaya. Terramaya, which is run by a New Yorker ex-pat and his Honduran wife who were great hosts, is conveniently situated just two and half blocks from the town park and all restaurants, cafes and shops. The hotel has spectacular views overlooking the picturesque town of Copan, part of the Ruins and the surrounding mountains. If you’re an early bird the best part of this view is catching the magnificent sunrise from the private balcony while swinging on the beautifully embroidered hammock. The whole place has a simple yet elegant architecture, from the breezy French doors to the high wood paneled ceilings with exposed wood beams. Our room, we had one of the second floor ones overlooking the mountains rather than one of first floor rooms that have their own private gardens, had a Queen bed, bedside table and plenty of space to hang clothes. The bathroom had large, clean showers with really good hot and cold water pressure and lots of counter space. The hardwood shutters over the windows are a lovely touch, giving one the choice to keep the shutters open allowing the room to fill with plenty of natural light or closed to darken the room for sleeping. There is a/c in the room but it was hardly needed especially during the evening hours since it gets pretty cool. There’s an exquisite terraced garden with plenty of colorful tropical blossoms and many varieties of tropical plants. It is the perfect place to sit down and read a good book or catch up on news via the free wireless internet in the afternoons before heading out for dinner. Though we only spent a week here we easily felt like we could have stayed for a lot longer.
Thanks Howard and Angela for a great experience!
