Owner description: Copan Ruinas valley of Kings, Sacred Valley of the Red Scarlet Macaw. Copan Ruinas is an ancient city in the mayan Empire. Located in western honduras at just under 10 minutes from the border with Guatemala el Florido. More than 138,000 visitors came here in 2017, the lowest in years but with a slight increase in traffic in comaprison to 2015. | Many agree the bad condition of the road play an important role to this lack of traffic. Hopefully in 2018 will be better.

Our guide, Jorge, was excellent: very knowledgeable, informed, and able to teach to a large and varied group of children (3-15 years), young adults (18-20 years), and adults (40+ years). I would highly recommend spending the money to hire a guide. You are helping to support the local people, supporting those who are educated, and will have a much better experience if you know some of the history behind this amazing place. After we toured the ruins and museum, Jorge arranged for us to drive out of town a few miles on a windy dirt road to a roadside restaurant. They prepared roasted chicken, whole black beans, tortillas, rice, vegetables, and soup. It was amazing!

its very nice, quite, and specially almost empty early in the morning, but usd 15 might be a little too much for a place that can be walked in an hour or 2

One of the major attractions in Honduras, beautifully looked after. Worth getting a guide for a couple of hours as they are full of knowledge. There are multiple areas to be seen as part of the ruins, they all come with separate tickets, they can be purchased at the main entrance to the ruins and can be used over a couple of days. The only downside to the ruins is you are only allowed access once, so if you hire a guide and want to visit the museum as part of the guided tour you need to leave the site to do this and you may or may not be allowed back into the ruins. If you wish to take a more casual look around once the guided tour is finished (after visiting the museum) check with the guide to see if they can arrange for you to be readmitted to the site using the same ticket. We were able to arrange this and spent another couple of hours revisiting the ruins at our pace.

We had small expectations on Copan, from other travellers advice we thought it wouldn't compare to Tikal or Palenque, it holds its own among the Mayan ruins we visited, the Carvings and hieroglyphs are amazing. The trees and wildlife here are also incredible.

Loved the macaws at the entrance. The setting is magical and I thought I might be disappointed after Tikal but it is a great site to see the intricate carvings on the stone. The museum is well worth the extra entrance fee as you get to experience a life size version of one of the inner temples.
