Working for CAMO, we toured the Copan ruins although they are in very good shape. I was amazed that the area is so well kept and our guide was excellent. We got a very good sense of how the games were played and that the winning team got the "privilege" of sacrificing themselves at the end of the game. So counter intuitive to our way of life.

Be sure to see the information panel from the top of the pyramid facing the ball court. Panel gives you a very good impression of how popular the games were. We were told this was the second largest ball court in Central America and that two other "practice" ball courts also existed on the site. Note the macaw heads carved atop the sloping walls.

The ball that they used weighed 8 kilos and and often the looser was sacrificed the ball court is very well preserved and you get a sense of the games taking place as there are seats arround it.

Just plain interesting. You really start to appreciate how they played soccer in a different way, and with an 8 pound ball. Life or death depended on winning and losing.

very interesting although (in my opinion) not as good as that at Chichen Itza. The staff keep the site in very good condition
