After spending a week on Utila island for diving, we spent a night at Delphina before catching our plane back to Canada. What an experience! We wish we would have spent our whole week at Delphina. Richard is fantastic and you will be greated like royalty. The site overlooks the ocean and you will fall to sleep to the sound of the waves. If you want a cold beer, this is the place. The coldest beer we ever drank anywhere.

Thank you Richard and we will be back!

Martin and Linda

While staying at the Palma Real, about 500 meters down the beach, we discovered La Delphina on one of our strolls. Or should we say, La Delphina found us? The owner and host, Richard Beckett, encouraged us off the beach for a few drinks at his poolside bar. The company was so enjoyable that we spent the afternoon and then committed to having Richard take us "anywhere we wanted to go" the next day by mini-bus.
Richard is a native Honduran, who lived for many years in Boston where he was a cop. He recently retired back to La Ceiba where he built his bed and breakfast, bar and grill, which he now runs with his delightful young girlfriend, Kelly.
Richard keeps a well stocked bar and is anxious for you to be adventurous in your tastes. He even plied us with his own homebrewed Guiffity - a local concoction made from wood bark and stems. Supposedly it is non-alcoholic but it definitely changes your perception of life! Richard also cooked up a platter of spicy chicken, rice and onions which was the most tasty thing we ate all week!
The local tourist agency, Turaser, charges $10 per person for a round trip into town to the mall - that's it. Richard promised a full day of touring for just $15 per person - and he didn't disappoint.
First we visited the nearby fishing village of Sambo Creek. Then it was up the mountain to the Jungle School, where we joined 63 children from kindergarten through grade 6 at lunch time. Richard supports this school and has a huge heart!
We then dropped in to meet two of his friends who own upscale bed and breakfast hotels. We had drinks at one and lunch at the other - both very enjoyable.
We stopped halfway down the mountain at the Pico Bonito Cloud Forest, an ecological centre of many acres where one can see and learn about the many indiginous plants, animals and insects. We crossed the river gorge via a swinging pedestrian bridge and enjoyed a unique view of the whitewater rafting route. Richard can arrange rafting tours, canopy zipline tours and even boat trip to the Cayos Cochinos islands 26 km from the mainland. Truly - anything you want to do, see or buy - Richard can arrange!
Later, we ventured into the town of La Ceiba for a brief visit to the main mall - it was too American! Richard and kelly then took us to a local stall market where we could haggle with each of the cart owners - much more fun!
Finally, Richard took us to his local wholesale supplier where we got local prices for rum, coffee and other sundries - definitely not available to the average tourists.
All in all, it was a great day. Richard and Kelly are such a joy to be with and to talk to. Thanks to them, we got to meet the real Honduras that most tourists never get to see.
