“Fantastic Birding Spot!!!”
Reviewed 16 June 2014

We stayed here during a bird trip in February 2014. The resort is new so the cabins are very modern and clean. Large bathroom, sitting area with fridge and large bedrooms. The WIFI service was unexpected but welcome. The main resort area where you eat meals is open-air and very pleasant. The food was great and the staff were helpful! There are several hundred hummingbird feeders scattered around the main dining area so it is a great place to hang out. There are always hummingbirds around and photography is excellent. There are many trails from the lodge with plenty of opportunity to see many bird species. Our guide did a fantasic job finding the black-crested coquette male and at least 4 male lovely cotingas- three in one tree. The resort has a large footprint and preserves a large tract of land. The hiking trail to the waterfall was also a great birding opportunity. The staff are very much into birding and love to do guided hikes. Overall a great experience and would recommend for anyone.

Room Tip: The room was spacious, large and clean. There was no air-conditioning but the ceiling fans were more...

We didn't learn about this place until we had already booked most of our vacation, so we only got to spend one night here, but we would have spent more if we had been able to. We also did a separate, day trip here with a guide just for birdwatching. This is a fantastic spot for birds. There are a couple of hundred hummingbird feeders around the main building and bar, and the place hums with the sound and sight of hummingbirds, over a dozen species. A highlight of the trip was a hike up to see the black coquette hummingbird. We even saw the Lovely Cotinga. There are trails, streams, and waterfalls. There was a nice looking pool, which we didn't get to use because we were too busy birdwatching and hiking. Alex knows his birds and was always eager to take us out for a hike. The meals were great, especially Terry's lasagna. The accommodation was amazing - brand new large, 2 bedroom cottages with a living area and kitchen, and spread out around the property quite separate from each other. Whether you are a birdwatcher or not, I would recommend a stay here - for nature, wildlife, relaxing. We could have spent a week!

This is a new and developing resort. We traveled on a birding adventure with well informed and delightful birding guide, Robert Gallardo. All the apartments were well furnished and spotless. The staff was very helpful and friendly. The road to the resort is a bit of a challenge, but at a beautiful end in a river valley. We appreciated the WI-FI in such a remote area. They offer a large number (we counted 12 varieties ) of hummingbirds and unusual sightings of Black Crested Coquette hummingbird, the Lovely Cotinga and other remote and colorful birds. The property has waterfalls and rocky streams coming off the mountains. Rio Santiago was deep enough for kids to swim and locals spearfished for shrimp at night.
