“Great Stay at Helens”
Reviewed 19 May 2008

We just recently returned from a trip to Honduras and stayed 2 nights at Helens. The hotel is a 15-20 minute drive East from La Ceiba just on the outskirts of Sambo Creek. We really enjoyed our stay at Helens.

Location:
The hotel is on the beach in a great location right on the beach. Sambo Creek is a 5 minute walk up the beach where you can find other restaurants etc. The hotel is also in close proximity to the ecotourism of the La Ceiba area such as ziplines (just down the road), Pico Bonito, white water rafting etc. Jack from the hotel can set you up with any excursions you wish to take and can ususally get a better deal for you.

Rooms:
Jack upgraded us to one of the cabins as we had our 2 young children with us. The cabin was nice with a kitchen area with fridge and stove, bedroom with 2 beds, living room, a/c and fans. The rooms were clean and had everything we needed.

Staff:
Jack and his staff were absolutely amazing to us and our kids. They went out of their way to make sure the stay was enjoyable and were happy to help whenever they could.

Restaurant:
The restaurant had good food with a good selection of items. Food and beverages were reasonably priced. Make sure you try Jacks famopus pancakes in the morning.

Overall:
Our stay was great. The rooms are very reasonably priced and Jack and his staff treat you like family. I would definately recommend staying here.

Helen, Jack, and Allen are really nice and go out of their way to make you feel comfortable. The water is hot, you have internet access, clean sheets, a nice outdoor bar and a casual tropical atmosphere. You will probably need a car to get there.

We stayed at this hotel during a short trip to La Ceiba in March of 2006. It was our first trip to Honduras, and we were checking out property.

We really enjoyed the Bed and Breakfast style of stay that Hotel Helen offers. It is small and very personal. The rooms are nice, but keep in mind, this is not a ritzy hotel. I think there are eleven rooms. I liken it to visiting a friend.

Helen and Alain were wonderful. Everything and anything you asked for was a breeze for them. The food and drinks were great, and all put on a tab. They helped us book excursions and talked with us at length regarding life in Honduras.

The beach at this hotel is very clean.

Overall, we really enjoyed our stay.

Helen's is far and away the best place one can stay in La Ceiba. The other hotels are either "institutonal" and uninteresting, often along a dirty municipal beach, or in town amidst the noise. Helen's is about a 25 minute drive from La Ceiba, but it's worth it. She has one of the only clean beaches in the area, and it's a great place to "hang out" from hard travelling for a few days. Helen is warm and friendly, speaks Spanish and French and English fluently (she married a French Canadian), and has one of the best kitchens in the area to prepare a simple but tasty meal. The rooms are clean and nice, but not all of them have an ocean view. She even has some houses that can be rented long term.

She's right next to a hotel called the "Canadienne" which caters to French Canadians. An unfriendlier bunch of people (staff and owners, not the guests necessarily) you could not want to meet. We arrived one night after Helen's kitchen closed and walked next door to try out their restaurant. We were chaseded down by the owner, demanded our business, and when we told her we were looking for the restaurant, she escorted us there and instructed us to either stay there or leave, but not to wander the grounds! We were blown away! The food was substandard to boot!

  • Liked — clean beach, friendly ownders
  • Disliked — Hard to get to if you don't have a car
  • Tips/Secrets — Try to get the upstairs rooms which have the view of the ocean. Worth reserving in advance.
