I am a retired massage therapist and have worked in spas and also visited many top spas in the U.S. The Mauna Lani has always been a spa that has top ratings and I was excited to try it. I was really bummed about the facilities. They were old and outdated and I was not given a full tour or access to everything. The spa attendants were nice, but not knowledgeable and eager to get home.
Pros:
Watsu Water Massage with Sandy. AMAZING, even life-changing. Seriously. I felt like a magical mermaid and was transported back into the safety and security of the womb. There is NO OTHER Watsu pool like this in the entire state of Hawaii. Perfection!

Cons:
Attendants reminded me THREE times that they closed at 5:30 and started putting everything away and rushing people around 5:00

Attendant could not tell me what was in the ice tea. I am allergic to pineapple, so this is important.

Attendant did not give me a tour of entire facilities. Due to this I spent 3 hours in the "relaxation room" which was two benches with cushions and bright overhead lighting. As I was escorted to my Watsu massage we passed an AMAZING outdoor relaxation area with comfy seating, and warm breezes, birds chirping, nice lighting. WHY did they not show me this?

Disposable combs in Barbicide.

cheap Costco granola bars

Big jangling key on a wooden bead bracelet. If you are going to give me a bracelet, then give me a robe with a pocket to put it in.

The ONLY thing that saved this rating was the Watsu treatment. Otherwise, I would give it like 2 stars since it was not filthy dirty. They seriously need to step it up. No wonder most people go to the Fairmont Orchid now.

My family and I stayed on the Mauna Lani over New Years. We frequent this particular property quite regularly (once every three or so years from age 5 on) so the hotel holds a special place in my heart. That being said, there has been a lot of updating in the last 20 years. When we went to visit the main hotel (we now rent houses on the property due to our growing family) there was a lot of work that needed to be done. The spa also hasn't seen a lot of updating. The common areas/locker rooms have remained unchanged for at least the last ten years or so. It's still nice, its clean, and the staff is very helpful/welcoming, but the amenities could definitely be upgraded (coed areas for couples, updated bathrooms, a spa).

But all that was forgotten as soon as my massage started. I received a Lomi Lomi massage from Carole and let me tell you, it was pure bliss! I received my 90 minute massage in an outdoor hut. The temperature was perfect, the massage table was comfortable, Carole started and ended the session with a Hawaiian Blessing...it was incredible. The time went by all too quickly and when I met up with my sisters (3 lomi lomis and one fire & ice facial) they all agreed that it was one of the best treatments they had ever received. IMO its impressive that there isn't just one or two great massage therapists but they are all held to the same high standard, I've been to many spas where that is not the case. Overall, I would absolutely recommend this spa. The amenities may not be as nice as some others but you can't beat the experience. Until next time Mauna Lani! Mahalo and Aloha!

Wife and I do the massage thing on trips and sometimes it is a bit disappointing...not this time! I had a deep tissue massage and wife had a shiatsu massage plus we both had facials (110 minute for her and 50 minute men's for me, my first).

Wife said the facial was the best she has ever had and my massage (Roberto I think) was the perfect combination of massage and "therapy" since Roberto not only did the massage part but also focused on some leg stretching and also managed to miraculously address some arm muscle pain that has been plaguing me for months. Facility is very nice and the outdoor massage village and outdoor showers were very relaxing. We'll do it again on our next trip!

After a particularly tough work week, sore necks, and aching backs made us desire a relaxing spa day.
Booking a service gives you access to the fitness center and pool/jacuzzi, which are very nice.
We both booked a 50 minute Lomi Lomi massage.
The facilities are nicely appointed, and the staff attentive.
The massage itself was very nice, and felt like a quality massage, not the typical "resort" service.
A good experiace !

The Mauna Lani spa has retained all of its elegance...outdoor massages at no extra charge (ASK FOR NISA!); cold lavender scented washclothes for the steam room. Terrific outdoor showers. PAY THE EXTRA $$$s...absolutely head and above the Orchid's spa (B+) or Hilton Spa (C-).
