It might be difficult to find parking on weekends so think about going during weekdays. The State of Hawaii needs to fix the parking lot, which is in need of TLC.

Tunnels beach is very popular beach and can be crowded. The scenery is beautiful, and snorkeling is very good.

The area, about midway down on the beach, is where the scuba and snorkel classes go into the water, and can be crowded. Even early arrival where the classes are, parking is full.

This can be a problem, but if you drive about 1/4 mile further the Ha'ena Beach Park, early arrival, between 8-9 AM parking should be ok. Any latter you may have a problem, a may have to park on the road, not recommended.

You can walk from the Park to the beach, which is not that far. Staying away from the class area the beach isn't as crowded, although thru the day there is a constant flow of arrivals, and can be crowded toward late morning and afternoon.

Be sure to check the tide time table, in May the tide was out and coral was exposed. It did come back later on. We could not snorkel for about 1

An extra for the day was a Sports Illustrated Swim Suit photo shoot in process as we passed by! On top of that, when we found our spot on the beach, the was a weeding just off to our right. What a beautiful event in a beautiful setting.

Get to Tunnels early (very limited parking) or park at Ha'ena Beach Park and walk to Tunnels if you plan to spend any time at this lovely beach. The snorkeling right off shore is very good here with lots of different kinds of colorful fish. There may be lots of snorkelers sharing the experience with you, but the beach is large and we never felt crowded. (It's a great place for first-time snorkelers to get the hang of the whole thing.) There are nice trees lining the beach for shade and if you've parked at Ha'ena Beach Park, you can explore the dry cave across the road before you head home.
Note: It's often better to snorkel in the morning here when the wind and currents are not strong. We did feel the cross current picking up speed as the morning progressed at Tunnels Beach.

This beach is well worth the trip north. It is best to park in Ha'ena Beach Park and walk to your right. It turned out to be a very good snorkeling beach as well as beautiful. You may want to go on a dry day as the road and parking would be very messy if it had rained.

It's probably our own fault for getting there in the late morning, but parking was horrendous. We found a spot on the side of the road and had to walk a mile back down the road to find the beach again. We stayed at the beach for a few hours, it was enjoyable enough... it was a beach in Kauai! We snorkeled a bit, but didn't see anything impressive, and decided to leave. It's a pleasant beach, but not worth the fight for parking.
