The bay looks amazing from the overlook, but even though there is a lot of coral, the visibility was poor and there were few fish. We went about 7:30 am on a Sunday, so the tour boats hadn't arrived, and we were disappointed. The best part was the walk in from the big parking lot right off the main road--there were some gorgeous trees and the best population of jungle fowl we have seen on Maui! We went back to our condo north of Lahaina and had much better snorkeling.

Once you go north of Kapalua Bay, the resorts suddenly disappear and you enter a foresty unoccupied stretch of Maui. And after a few minutes drive you will see Honolua Bay to the left. This is supposedly the best snorkeling spot in all of Maui for experienced snorkelers.

But what they don't tell you is that there is no real public access to get to the bay itself, unless you are with some tour company. From the road, you have to go through a private property [forest] to get to the bay. It was a scary notion for us. So we just enjoyed the Bay views from the nearby viewpoint on our way back from Nakalele Blowhole. There were numerous snorkelers at the bay!

This was an interesting bay to get to. First, there is maybe six 'public' spots, the rest of the parking is on street (be careful to make sure you're inside the white line or you will get a ticket). Then you take a short walk through trees, some of which were dropping coconuts as we passed by, to be greeted by the gentleman that owns the adjacent property. He was really nice, reminding everyone not to use regular sunscreen (its bad for coral reef) and generally answering questions. There is no sand beach to speak of, just rocks and slippery rocks. I'd recommend you wear water shoes until you get in the water and swap out for fins, if you're using. The best snorkeling is on your right all along the rock face. Lots of different fish, some turtles, eels and larger fish. Its good snorkeling but I'd go to Kapalua Bay or Black Rock if you have limited snorkeling time.

We actually didn't snorkel here, although I hear it is amazing. We did however, walk the path down to the bay and it was amazing. You walk down through a dense tropic forest with monstrously tall trees with vines hanging down and other plants growing up. Even if you don't want to snorkel, it is well worth the ten minute walk through this forest. Even better would be to finish with some amazing snorkeling.
