AHH, December in Iowa...Nothing like it:) I-35 was closed and I was dropped by employer to wait to get vehicle towed. I spent 2 days here. Nice room. Great bedding. Clean. Decent continental breakfast. Everyone has those waffle machines these days! Indoor pool area was cold...wind chill factor may have had something to do with that.
I had few needs. The adjacent restaurant had the BEST all you can eat ribs ever!!! And they were working with a depleted staff and limited menu. Everything was most satisfactory, but I couldn't wait to leave.

Greetings,

The "wall" separating the room from the hallway was entirely glass. Unless the blinds are drawn anyone in the hallway can see into the room. Windows in the hallway also allow a view into the pool area below. It also means there is little to stop noise in the hallway (or pool) from being heard in the room. This wasn't terribly problematic during my stay since the hotel was not full and there were no screaming kids.

Rooms are large - although the bathroom area is very cramped. The in-room phone lists the hotels phone number - but it is actually their fax number. Huge selection of cable and premium movie channels for free.

Staff was very friendly.

Free Breakfast was in a specifically designed breakfast nook in an interior courtyard area - much better than the usually busy lobby breakfast. Breakfast was a full hot breakfast with waffles, sausage, biscuits and gravy, fruit, cereal, etc. All of it was well stocked.

Pool, hot tub, and large fitness center (elliptical, bikes, treadmills, etc.) are also in this interior courtyard area. The hotel also has large meeting rooms and an attached restaurant and nearby gas station. It is on the northern edge of Ames, which is largely centered around the next highway exit south.

Wireless internet connection was good.

Room was clean, bed was comfortable. Water smelled funny - maybe an Iowa thing?

Be sure to remember to ask to have the "Safe" charge removed from your bill - I hate it when hotels try to nickel and dime you in such tedious ways. I think the $8 in "local" tax should be sufficient, particularly since the rate was too high to begin with.

Overall, this is a clean, comfortable place with a good breakfast, but has the potential to be noisy due to the location of the pool, thin walls, and glass partitions.

Went for two days of boring Farm Tax School. To my surprise what a great time..Tropical pool area with complete excercise center.Very impressive breakfast...free and a great selection of hot and cold items. In the evening had wonderfull BBQ in Buford's. It had a smoker in the dining room...what a nice change of pace. I even stayed an extra day.

The staff here was exceedingly kind, very courteous and knowledgeable. They lived and knew the area, so gave good restaurant and attraction information.
However, they did not seem to know their clientele and hotel well. I was given a choice of rooms, and said poolside sounded great, but worried about noise at night. My 3 kids would love being close to the pool! The clerk said, "No problem, the pool closes at 11" I knew we would be up to 11, so I thought great.
We were given the room next to the party room for a family reunion group. They were totally quiet until 1:00 when the bar closed, and I discovered how paper thin the walls in that hotel really are. I called the front desk and they sent down security. I could hear security talk to the party-ers, and then after he left, one guy in the room succinctly defined the whole situation.

"What the ----- are they gonna do to us? Kick us out in the middle of the night?"

And they kept right on partying and using the pool. I think some of them were persuaded to go back down and party in the lobby, so it got quiet for a bit again, but then I was awakened at 3:00 again, by noise and pool splashes. I called the front desk again. She said, "Well, how can they be a problem, they have been in our lobby until 2:30." As if because they had not been there for an hour, it was OK to wake everyone at 3:00.

Needless to say, I got very little sleep that night. I have to rate this hotel experience as the worst of any hotel I have ever been in around the world in my 40 plus years of traveling. Not too shabby for a mid-size Iowa town!

Stay anywhere but this hotel, or make sure no one else is in a room next to or above or below you, or you will hear everything!!! Also ask to see if there are any family reunions going on. I have never met a ruder bunch of people.
