Our family has vacationed at Fillenwarth Beach for most of the past 25 years. It is a very laid back, comfortable place to enjoy family, do nothing, or be active all day.

What it is: comfortable, (somewhat rustic) accomodations; friendly helpful staff; lots of activities offered throughout the day; beautiful lake; opportunities to spend lots of time on the water without bringing a boat. The Monday night Get Acquainted Party and the daily cocktail cruises are particularly enjoyable.

What it is not: an upscale resort with granite and stainless steel; staff expecting tips for every service.

Our family believes that if you don't have fun at Fillenwarth Beach, it is your own doing.

My wife is a native of the area and we chose Fillenwarth's because of reputation and location. We stay here on our annual trip back home to the lakes area. We never leave disappointed.

The resort: Great activities to keep you busy and get you out on the lake. They have a great sundeck to get your tan and you and the kids a dip in the lake. Many docks to give you an opportunity to get out and catch a fish. Many kinds of boat tours to get you out on the lake. We've been on the home tour cruise, the Sun Runner cruise, and out in the paddle boats. Our next trip back we are looking to go on the history cruise. Lots of other activities available that are outlined on the website.

The rooms: We stayed in the Lakefront Chateaus. We had 5 and fit very comfortably. Our room had a sun deck where we could eat dinner and sip on beverages as the sun went down. The room had a kitchenette and a grill that allowed us to cook a meals. We felt like we were in our own little lakefront cabin. It was great.

The staff: The staff took care of our every need. They made sure we had everything we needed in our room. They taught my oldest son to waterski and were very patient with my youngest when he tried. They also gave my oldest son tips what bait to use when he went fishing. Outstanding group. Very impressed with their people.

The location: Fillenwarth's is located a block or two from the Central Emporium. Which is great for shopping and dining. Be sure to grab some lunch and a beverage at the Gardens in the emporium. Also within walking distance to Arnolds Park and the restaurants and bars on Broadway.

All in all I would highly recommend this place to any family or friends that are travelling to the area. It has all the elements for a great stay in the Iowa Great Lakes.

We stayed here for our 10th Anniversary & it was great! Family owned and operated resort with condos, apartments, & cute cottages. They have paddle boats, canoes, jet skis, and sailing included in your stay. They also provide adult & family sun runner cruises. They have a meet & greet at the beginning of each week & chocolate, wine, or beer tastings during the week. The cottages are well equiped and clean. They provide each cottage with a grill, deck with a patio table to dine. They offer discounts outside of tourist season making it even more afforable to get away. Loved this place!

Room Tip: Look online..they can accomendate any size family or couples. The apartments & condos are on the waters edge. The cottages are across the road from the office. Arnolds Park Amusement, parasailing, and Caption Jack's bar is within walking distance. Also within walking distance is The Garden for food and drinks on the deck, which is within the Emporium for some shopping. Their are coffee houses and antique shops all within walking distance.

My husband and I book the same cabin each year and feel like we are coming home when we arrive at an annual gathering with friends. We like "our" cabin so much that we have never stayed in the apartments fronting Lake Okiboji (although curiosity encourages me to take a look at them next year). The cabin is equipped with refrigerator, range, microwave and dishwasher. Beds are very comfortable A gas grill and tables and chairs grace the cabin's deck. We enjoy the free cocktail cruises each day and I really want to try the paddle boats. All recreation, including water skiing, is part of the package (no charge for recreation). There are both outdoor and indoor pools, volleyball nets, picnic areas, etc. Best of all, the Fillenwarth family has owned this place for generations and Ken Fillenwarth and his daughters treat visitors like family. We LOVE this place (oh, wait, I already said that).

Room Tip: Reservations are required. No credit cards are accepted, so pay by check.

My extended family and I recently stayed at fillenwarth beach for a Family reunion. We rented 7 units, including 6 cottages, and had family members attend from Iowa, Oregon, Colorado, Florida, Indiana Illinois and New Zealand. We stayed for 4 nights over Memorial Day, and some of us stayed for the week. We planned this reunion well in advance and coordinated everything with the resort. The reunion was planned around my mother's 93rd birthday and we had group meals planned for every evening. Unfortunately, and unavoidably, the weather was horrible. It was cold, rainy and dismal the entire time! So all those wonderful get together s in the picnic area had to be moved somewhere. We had previously talked to staff about a plan b and they said there was a large room where we could set up, but it was first come basis. We were apparently the only large group at the resort, so we didn't think it would be an issue. Little did we know that use of the room was first come AFTER management! Twice, after getting all the tables set up (tablecloths, etc.) we were asked to leave so that staff could FOLD TOWELS in that room. The house keeping manager literally argued with me and was very rude as I suggested other rooms in the resort where they could possibly fold towels. Remember, it was cold and rainy -- we had no where else to go. We were also chased out of this room on Memorial Day in the middle of my mom's 93rd birthday party, and i was lectured by the owner's daughter when i complained. So that they could bring in food and have a staff meeting!!! After that we gathered in the recreation room above, which is open until midnight, and played a game of Guestures. We were a little loud, but there were kids and my 93 year old mom there, so there was no foul language or anything bad going on. We were admonished several times because they said they could not hear the phones. And at about 10:00, a staff member came over and screamed at us that "you have to be quiet. Mr. Fillenwarth is sleeping right above you!!!

My take on this resort is that it has been there forever, owned by the same people, and just because they may have the best site on the lake, they feel their guests should accommodate them, instead of the other way around. I know they can't control the weather, but you would think they would have bent over backwards to help make things better. We all had travelled miles and miles to be together, paid them thousands and thousands of dollars (this place isn't cheap) and we were miserable, just trying to make the best of it.

We stayed in cottage 409. Much smaller than the pictures. The kitchen is literally a one-person room. If the refrigerator door is open, you cannot enter or exit the room. The floor throughout the cottage is extremely uneven. We had a terrible ant problem upstairs -- sugar ants were coming out of the alarm clock and there was a serious carpenter ant problem in the kitchen. Three times we had maintainance come to turn off the furnace fan, which was stuck. (Yes, we had to run the furnace).

Any positives to mention here? Well, the kitchen is well stocked with nice utensils, dishes and pots. And the kids that work there are fun and friendly, except for those that have been given some management capacity. Would I stay here again? Never in a million years. And based on this experience, neither should you.

Room Tip: Just stay away. Walking distance to Arnold's park is not worth the cost, aggravation, decrepit rooms and management rudeness. Btw, the pools are NOT heated. The indoor one is in a heated room. Does that count? Really?
