As with many Algerian restaurants, you have to ring the bell or knock on the door to get in. The first thing you notice on entering is the quality of the decor. This feels like walking back in time to some rich Algiers household, beautiful tiling and wood panels, a mixture of low tables with sofas, and more formal dining tables with white linen. They have got the look of the restaurant just right, and I doubt it has changed for years.

The service here is good, and the manager/owner seems to take control of all the tables at the welcoming and ordering stage, while the waiters take over for the serving of the food. They serve alcohol and will offer aperitifs and nibbles (marinated carrots, olives and spicy pepper dip) while you order.

The menu is extensive and specialises in traditional Algerian and North African fare. Tadjines and couscous dishes dominate. I think the best thing to eat here is the couscous, of which there are several variations. Last time, I had the lamb brochette couscous which comes to the table in a beautiful serving dish. On the side, you get a large pot of steaming vegetables and sauce to pour over the top of the succulent meat. Those vegetables are deliciously cooked, with subtle cinnamon flavours. Seasoning is spot on. We enjoyed the excellent St Augustin (an Algerian red wine) with the meal.

We didn't order dessert, just mint tea - though the waiters did bring copious amounts of very good dates to the table.

The Djenina is not a cheap restaurant, especially as this is what many Algerian families would regard as regular home-cooked food. But if you want a really nice looking restaurant to go to, with some great cooking and a good glass of wine, then this is the place. We'll definitely be returning.

Good parking outside on the street, though it'll cost 100 Dinars on exit.

This restaurant is one of the best in Algiers, for traditional food.

The place is well decorated, with possible (limited) views of the bay of Algiers in summer.

The service is excellent and friendly.

The (local) food is excellent, with a standard price. The wine selection too, spurge a little to get a very good one.

Altough the location is in the centre, you will probably need a taxi to get there.
