“Brilliant seafood!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 May 2013

I was rather reluctant to go to a restaurant that didn't serve solely Algerian cuisine during my stay in Algiers, lucky for me I decided to pay a visit to La Tantra.
Nested in a large forest near the martyr's monument, one of Algiers's landmarks, lies La Tantra, a brilliant restaurant specializing in seafood but serving limited plates of poultry and beef as well.

We were initially off to a rocky start with no English menus in the place, I was literally trying to decode the French menu until one of the waiters presented himself and offered to translate the menu. I ended up ordering fried shrimp for appetizers, grilled sea bass for the main course and french apple pie with ice-cream for desserts.

Bread was served with a plate of tomatoes & sardines and another plate of grilled peppers. The tomato and sardines were truly appetizing letting you give serious thought to ordering more.

The shrimp delicious, fried to perfection and served with some sort of light pineapple sauce. The highlight however is undoubtedly the grilled sea bass, seared and grilled, it is juicy and full of flavour. There is no sauce with the fish, allowing you to savor the taste of the sea bass in all its glory! A highly highly recommended dish!

Next came the dessert which was french apple pie with cinnamon ice-cream. The apple pie was served very warm, moist and soft with a crunchy crust, by far one of the best apple pies I have had in quite sometime.

The interior of the place is also very nice and quite elegant. The waiters, while not bilingual, were very helpful and extremely attentative.

However the place does it crowded quite fast, with no non-smoking area, the smoke from cigarettes does get a bit overwhelming. The other negative would be that they couldn't debit my credit card due to "communication errors" and required a cash payment, so make sure you do visit with cash just in case.

Being located in the forest, make sure you arrange transportation to leave the restaurant. A highly recommended restaurant for a delightful experience.

“For Fish and traditional dishes”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 May 2013

The Tantra Restaurant is situated inside the the Forest of "Makam Echahid" or "Sanctuaire du Martyre" in Algiers.

The proffesionalism of the staff have a positive impact on the reputation of the Restaurant, add to this, the variety of food offered: Fresh Fish brought directly from the Port of Algeirs, and the Port of Bouharoun (a nice region, 50Km far from Algiers).

“Inacceptable”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 May 2013

We were 5 peuple and one of us had call before going to the restaurant to Check it was possible to pay with a credit card. The experience of food was so so: some very good meals but other more deceptive. The service was not professional and lot of products were out of stock (such as champagne in a restaurant which pretends to be high range). The bill was very high compared to our experience and last but not least, we have not been able to pay because the machine was out of order. We had to spend more than an hour in algiers to look for a cash machine with a guy from the restaurant following us to make sure we will pay. Not exactly the most pleasant situation to enjoy the end of evening!!!

“Elegent and friendly..”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 March 2013

Had a very good dining experience, friendly staff, decent food quality, yet overpriced for what you get.. Unfortunately the competition is very limited so we have to accept what we pay. I will go again cause there is no choice...

“Le Tantra, more of a special occasion meal”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 February 2013

Algiers, Algeria is a difficult city to find a good meal where the decor, food and the ambiance all combine to make the evening an enjoyable experience.
We have lived in Algiers for 4 years and found that this combination is extremely difficult to find (all three at least).
Tantra has the ambiance of a well patronised restaurant, the decor is bright and elegant although a little dated, the food well prepared and varied, mostly French / Mediterranean in style. Plenty of meat and fish dishes although rather lacking in the vegetarian department.
The menu seems to change on a regular basis, the starters cost around 10-15 Euros, Mains 20-25 Euros and Deserts 7-10 Euros equivalent.
The food in the menu description is a little over the top but the taste once you know what you are getting is delicious. Look out for the Tarte Tatin (pear on this occasion), not often you find a desert you enjoy in Algiers.
Lastly, due to the cost of a full meal based on others within town, this restaurant would be included in the ''special occasion'' section but is well worth the visit.
