“Beautiful, historic”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 June 2014

El-Djazair is more than just a hotel: it is a very piece of historical architecture sitting atop of Algiers' hills. To put it this way - many of the Allied operations during Second World War were planned within El-Djazair's dependencies. As if this weren't enough, the rooms are clean and large, and if you get a room facing north you can have the best view of the Mediterranean sunset while sipping some tea. Besides that, there's an excellent pool, tennis courts, piano bar, a nice garden for walks. The details in the hotel's common rooms are mindblowing: everything is covered with maghreb-style intricate decoration. The restaurant is great and not expensive. If you're in Algiers with some money to spend (as the hotel's fare is definitely not budget) I would most certainly recommend this experience. Last thing: when you're at El-Djazair, don't spend much time in your room. Go explore the hotel.

Room Tip: get a room facing the mediterranean. that's it.

It is located on the Souidani - Boudjemaâ Avenue (formerly Foureau Lamy ) .
This is one of the oldest and most prestigious palaces of Algiers .

Hotel St. George has hosted distinguished guests :
the Prince and Princess of Wales Edward VII and Alexandra ,
General Eisenhower, De Gaulle, Simone de Beauvoir , Baron Rothschild, Rudyard Kipling ...

This famous hotel was built on this part of Algiers, called during the French occupation Mustapha Supérieur . Originally, it was a Turkish palace.

A family the Guiauchain : father, son and grand-son linked their lives to the improvement of the place to make it the famous Hotel Saint Georges.

the grandfather , Pierre Auguste (1806-1875) , chief architect of the city of Algiers in 1834 ; Father Georges (1840-1908) and finally the son ,
Jacques ( 1884-1960 ) .

The first bought it , the second turned into girls' boarding school in 1889 and totally refurbished in the third hotel in 1927. They were all architects.

English guests were very likely to stay at the Hotel St. George . The mild climate of Algiers attracted them , especially in winter . "British colonists felt so they came in waves , settling on the heights of Algiers (El- Biar and Mustapha Supérieur ) highly valued for their beauty and calm. They bought up old Ottoman homes and built new under the leadership of the English architect Bucknall (1833-1895) specialist combined with a Neomoorish style .

Among these English homes : Villa Djenane El- Mufti, villa (located below the Hotel St. George) ; Emerald Park ( path Wisteria ) Current residence of the Ambassador of the United Kingdom.

Hotel St. George was named in honor of the patron saint of England Saint George (no "S") .

A plaque at the entrance to one of the lounges , " the living ambassadors ", recalled that it was here that held the Franco-American Conference November 10, 1942 , two days after Operation Torch . The armistice between the U.S. General Park and Admiral Darlan ( High Commissioner of French Africa) was signed on November 10, 1942 in this hotel.

The headquarters of General Eisenhower
Next to the room occupied by General Eisenhower , a commemorative plaque was affixed : " General Dwight Eisenhower, commander of Allied expeditionary forces in North Africa had its headquarters in this room between November 1942 and December 1943 . "
Hotel St. George at El Djazaïr

After the work of expansion and redevelopment under the direction of architect Fernand Pouillon and collaboration ceramist Mohamed Boumehdi , Hotel St. George was renamed El Djazaïr in 1982.

Hotel El Djazaïr is now a 5 star hotel located in the heart of the city of Algiers in lush greenery.

El Djazaïr Hotel is a Luxury , Moorish architecture , a real gem of a hotel Algeria , the hotel is mostly full of history of the past century ,.

The hotel has 180 rooms equipped with all modern amenities.

For gourmands Hotel El Djazaïr offers a wide choice of dishes with two gourmet restaurants : The St. George ( French and Algerian cuisine ) and Jade Pagoda ( Chinese cuisine).

Relax in the lounge bar The Dey or snack bar El Yasmine and exalt you in the disco Hotel St. George : The Pacha Club.

For your relaxation the hotel has a fitness room , an outdoor swimming pool and a tennis court .

The other thing about the hotel is its great very rich in flora botanical garden,

This garden is a den far from bursting Algiers atmosphere.

When in Algiers, even if you do not stay there, have a lunch a drink and or a dance in this place, this place is the symbol of Algiers for almost two centuries

On a recent business trip to Algiers we stayed in the El Djazair for two nights. It's definitely different from the more modern Business Hotels around the world with it's old style architecture and rooms.I stayed in a recently renovated room, where everything was up to normal standard, apart from IT connectivity which seems to work only partly. This didn't bother us as we could get connected in our partners offices. The Restaurants have both Arabic and European cuisine and were really good, with some excellent Algerian wines on the menu. Security measures seemed to be a bit over the top, but who knows. I recommend the El Djazair to business travellers, who haven't lost their sense for old traditional hotels. The staff is friendly and welcoming, some things take a little time. Speaking French is a definite advantage in the house, it makes everything easier! Prices are elevated as in other Top Hotels in Algiers!

Room Tip: There seem to be rooms which have been renovated not long ago, ask the reception.

Since Algeria is not a touristic country we could not expect sn high quality service in theirs hotels, even if we are talking about an 4 or 5 stars hotel.
El Djazair is a decent hotel, clean, nice staff and a nice garden! No more than this! 200€ per night with out breakfast, for each meal on the restaurant expect to pay at least 45€! Rooms with old decor, beguinning of the 80's but clean, full of carpets good for people with alergies!
Nice gym full of equipments
Nothing to see or visit near hotel, neither a good place to dinner out

What a delight to stay in this city-centre hotel in Algiers. Built in the late 19th century, it has all the glamor of that era. History, wonderful gardens, two very good restaurants and very polite staff. Truly worth it.

Stayed here for 5 nights whilst on a business trip so was not paying for the room or breakfast.Despite others reviews I would say this hotel is of a high international standard with excellent service and facilities. My room was spacious, well equipped with a great balcony overlooking the bay.The bar and patio were excellent with reasonably priced alcohol freely available. The breakfast was fine with a good selection of items but not the same as the american/english buffet type. Why should it as you are in Africa's largest country.
