“Perfect Honeymoon”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 May 2014

We had a wonderful 4 night stay at Dar Maktoub as part of our honeymoon. The room was gorgeous and very large with a stunning shower room and living area. The pool and garden area is lovely for relaxing in the sun and has plenty of shaded areas to sit and read. WiFi is strong in all areas. Food was very good, we had 3 different meals the 3 nights we ate in the hotel. Staff are so friendly and were happy to book taxis to Agadir and the bus station. Highly recommended for a relaxing stay in gorgeous surroundings.

I have just recently come home from a weeks stay in this lovely small guest house. As previous clients have said it is on the outskirts of Agadir and a car is a benefit. The house is divided into various buildings and are spread around the grounds. We spent time in the gardens and by the pool, which I might add is not heated, much to my disappointment. Freezing cold in December. We stayed in room 3 which was a good size and a huge bed. There is a mini fridge to use but no tea/coffee facilities. I did take my own and was glad I had. Breakfast was the same every day and by the end of the week I was in need of a change. The dinner arrangements I really didn't understand at all. There is no choice, its what the chef decides in the morning, and I did feel that this could so easily be altered. Why there is not a second choice for the main dish is hard to understand. The Tagine dish was on the menu 3 out of the 7 nights we stayed, and my other gripe was that the dinning staff expect you to wait to have your meal until all the guests were in the dinning room. On one occasion we waited 1hr 20 minutes. I felt that this was unreasonable as not all guests want to eat at the same time. So if you are without a car then it is not that easy to eat in other places. There is however a small town of Inezgane outside the door
and turn left. The people are friendly and the fruit market is fascinating. We found a lovely coffee shop on the main road, off the roundabout and take the first left and its up on the right hand side. Worth a visit. Overall we had time to relax and do very little, the staff are helpful and there when needed. My advise is if you don't speak French then some words are worth learning as all the staff converse in French most of the time. The dog is a sweetie and bothers nobody and sleeps all day. Wish I could do the same.

Room Tip: No 3 is a good size room but I found it dark with just one window.

Dar Maktoub is a beautiful place in a tranquil setting with very friendly and welcoming staff. I booked to stay here for two nights after Essaouira as we were flying from Agadir back to the UK. When we arrived we were greeted by friendly staff and given a tour of the place. It does rules and times felt like a lodging house. We were also introduced to the charming chef as we wanted vegetarian food. I strongly recommend having dinner there at least once as it is delicious, but a little on the pricey side. The only downside about staying here is, although it is next to a national park, the actual entrance is 60 km down the road and you cannot enter it from the nearest gate due to the Royal Palace. However, a short walk does take you to the estuary where you can see pink flamingos. So apart from golfing, not a whole lot to do and taxis into town quite pricey. Great place for a chill out, but not if you want to see the real Morocco and experience local life.

We stayed here September for eleven nights , the rooms were well presented and spotlessly clean .The grounds and pool area is very nice , although the grass was fairly long which gave the resident mosquitoes plenty of opportunity to breed , the breakfast was very good a choice buffet plus eggs which were freshly cooked to your order. The staff were all very friendly and helpful and the addition of a friendly dog named Carter. The only downside was the expensive taxi ride to and from the centre of Agadir which was far more expensive for tourists than the locals , wifi was very hit and miss.

We chose to stay at Dar Maktoub based on the fact that it's rated Number 3 in Agadir on Trip Advisor and all of those recommendations can't be wrong, can it?

We arrived on Tuesday evening after a long coach journey from Marrakech to Agadir and a 100dh taxi from Agadir.

Dar Maktoub is set in a quiet location opposite a nature reserve and next to a couple of golf courses and after the long journey it was a welcome sight when we arrived. The beauty of the very well maintained gardens and pool was very refreshing.

We were shown around by Mohammed, although our names weren't taken and we never checked in, but Mohammed was nice and polite. We enquired about booking in for dinner and were informed that would be fine and we even discussed the fact the neither my wife or I eat fish, but this could be accomdated. So, very impressed with this news I decided to go for a swim before dinner.

After the swim, my wife and I were getting ready for dinner when at the Assistant Manager (Nabil) knocked on our room door (7) to inform us that our dinner reservation had been cancelled as they had confused us with another couple, Nabil said that he would book us a taxi into Agadir and said that it would be there in 45 minutes. Why there were no alternatives (something out of the freezer / takeaway pizza) or even an apology for the confusion offered, i don't know.

You can imagine our discontent and annoyance of this and we tried to discuss this with Nabil whilst waiting for the taxi to arrive, but to no avail. Apparently, it was all our fault and that was that. I rechecked the e-mail from Dar Maktoub, I had received a couple of weeks previously and although it was mainly regarding driving directions to find the place, at the bottom of the e-mail was a 1 liner stating 'Please let us know if you want to take lunch or dinner at Dar Maktoub'. Which we had done on our walkaround the house.

Anyway, as the saying goes, every cloud has a silver lining. We took Mr Hassan's taxi to Agadir and opted for an Italian place called Little Italy, as recommended by Guide Routard. It was lovely, the food and service were great and the restaurant was busy, with locals and tourists.I had the veal and my wife had a four cheese pizza, both were lovely. The restaurant have there own wood burning pizza oven and also do pizza for collection.

By the end of our first night, we had had a lovely meal but were still annoyed with the dinner fiasco.

Breakfast is lovely and served officially until 10am, but unofficially until 10.45am, which works well for those like us who want to have a lie in on holiday.

We decided to do the sunlounger thing and spent the day chilling by the pool and we booked in for dinner that evening, although even this is confusing (when we were shown around we were told that there is a book you sign in the morning to say that you want lunch or dinner that evening, well this book does not exist (there are two guest books in the dining area for people to leave comments on Dar Maktoub but no other books). In the afternoon, we spoke with Manu, who is the manager and she said that she would book us in for dinner. After a while, I spoke again with Manu and discussed the menu for that night and was informed that it was a fish main. I said that my wife and I do not eat fish and she went off and spoke with the chef and taht informed us that the chef would do us a Lamb tagine instead, which was great having had a few lovely tagines in Marrakech.

At dinner, the first course was Gazpacho (creamy but cold tomato soup). It had an interesting flavour. Then the tagine, or more aptly named as Lamb Cutlet stew. We were amazingly disappointed with this. How can a place which is so highly rated serve one of their national dishes so poorly. Not surprisingly the lamb cutlets produced alot of bone and not very much meat. So many bones that we asked for another plate to put them on. We had a pudding, but I can't remember what it was. All of this for 20 Euro's each (220 dh), excluding drinks. Our meal at Little Italy last night came to 357dh between us, including a bottle of wine and large bottle of water, but excluding the 100dh taxi each way. We were joking that it would be such a shame that the apparent best place we'd stayed on holiday would produce the worst meal of our holiday, and unfortunately, this was the case. We ate out every night after that.

On the Thursday, we did the sunbathing/chilling by the pool scene followed by dinner at an Austrian place called Mozartstube which was very expensive over 750dh for dinner but worth the money.

On Friday the weather gods were against us so we chilled in our room, playing monopoly on the ipad, but most frustrating was that the WI-FI doesnt work in the bedrooms. I discussed this with Nabil and he informed that the wifi worked up to a certain area but not reaching the bedroom. There is wifi, if intermittent, covering the whole complex but not in the one place where you would expect it, your bedroom.

On Friday evening we had a lovely meal at Little Italy again and we left on Saturday morning after breakfast.

Overall, we were left a bit disappointed by our stay at Dar Maktoub. There were lots of little things which they could improve on and which wouldn't cost alot but would improve the facilities, namely:

1. Wifi in the bedrooms.
2. Having food in the fridge/freezer to offer guests who haven't booked dinner or who may have changed there minds.
3. Selection of local restaurants / takeaways menus
4. Improving the website - to correspond with the literature at the house. Transfers to the airport on the website state that it costs 40 (440dh) Euro yet at the House it says that its 20 Euro (220dh). As we'd read the website prior to arriving, we agreed the standard taxi rate to the airport of 200dh, thus we thought saving us 240dh, but in fact saving 20dh.
5. Improving the e-mails to state that if you want dinner on arrival then you must let us know, as opposed to the 'Please let us know if you want to take lunch or dinner at Dar Maktoub'.

Room Tip: Room 7 has no wifi, hopefully this can be rectified.

10 minutes drive outside of Agadir next the Golf area.

rooms are very spacious and nicely decorated in moroccan style, though bathrooms should be renewed and cleaned better!

Nice breakfast served in open pergola next to the swimming pool.

Dinner very nice served in the same (breakfast) area with candle light and soft lounge music. A must! Better than many restaurants in Agadir.

The most beautiful thing of this riad is the wonderful garden and the enormous swimming pool. Full with wonderful flowers, plants and trees, lightened up during the night.
I can not imagine a better place to stay in Agadir.

People go to Agadir not for the city itself, since it is not very special, except the nice never-ending walk long the beach. But for whom wishes to rest and relax, the Dar Maktoub is without any doubt the place to stay.

We wish to thank Emanuela, who has always been available for any of our needs or just for a daily friendly chat.

Room Tip: the rooms seem all more or less the same but there is one with a private patio

Well worth the short distance out of Agadir to a lovely enclosed haven. Lovely swimming pool in flourishing gardens with welcoming staff and friendly dog!

The room was lovely with plenty of space and lovely soft furnishings. Bathroom was top notch with bright lighting.

Location excellent for seeing the flamingos at the edge of the river 5 mins away

Agadir can be quite misty in August but we got some sun by the pool and had a great stay.
