We stayed at this property for the first and last night of our 11 day tour of Morocco. When we arrived back after 10 days Laurent and his staff welcomed us back as if we were family. Service level was excellent, good food, nicely appointed unique rooms and a beautiful roof terrace. The building is unique and tucked away on a little side street and is a little tranquil oasis in the midst of the bustling city of Casablanca.

On a recent last-minute trip to Casablanca, we had no time to ask for hotel suggestions but we felt comfortable when hotel staff at La Mamounia in Marrakech mentioned the Relais & Chateaux Hotel Le Doge...Thank heavens we arrived late and found a nice restaurant next door for dinner. The hotel lobby was dirty, the grand staircase had red carpeting that had not been vacuumed in months. There was dust and dirt all over. On our bed I found four dark black hairs and I actually slept fully clothed (long sleeves and pants!) because I could only imagine how dirty the sheets were. The pillows were heavy and felt like they were ten years old. I covered mine with a pashmina to sleep. The sheets were rough but some of the bathroom towels were brand new (felt like they were straight from the factory). Our shower walls were spotted with soap residue and looked like it hadn't been scrubbed in a very long time. I have travelled through many rural parts of the world including factory towns in China twenty years ago and I have never slept in a hotel where I felt so uncomfortable. If this was an airport hotel, it would still get a "terrible" rating from me but it is horrible that it carries the Relais and Chateaux designation.
On the positive side, we were greeted on arrival and departure by the friendly hotel manager, and the building itself seems to have some nice authentic Art Deco architectural features. If you do stay, there is a nice restaurant around the corner named Le Rouget de L'isle.

This was the 1st hotel on our 2 week honeymoon of Morocco, we had stayed with Relais & Chateaux many times before so for us it was an obvious choice.

The hotel is tucked away and we'd never have found it without a guide, first impressions were fantastic, they had laid out flower petals on the bed, clearly knowing we were honeymooners, had Moroccan tea and cakes waiting, and the hotel itself is a stunning throw back to Art Deco, which my wife and I both love. Shortly after arrival we had dinner on the roof garden terrace, it was small, but more then adequate and the lunch was quite enjoyable in the clear spring weather.

Dining at the hotel is in a small restaurant (we were paying half-board so dinning in was "compulsory"). We actually stayed in the hotel twice, once on the way in and again at the end of the trip on our way out from Morocco (Casablanca being the gateway). The food was quite fine, although the atmosphere in the restaurant was a bit dull. We were the only diners and when not distracted by the (amazing) Deco stained glass windows and ceiling, you could see tables/chairs etc stacked in a corner near the kitchen service door, and hear the staff gossiping. Our second meal had more people which lifted the ambiance a little, but the other problems persisted.

Another gripe is the library bar next to the restaurant, it's a nice place to sit and relax in some old luxurious chairs amidst dusty volumes of books. My issue was with the drink service, you had to wait a while and they measured the pours to the milliliter and were stingy, my request for a heavier pour (so I could taste the gin in my G&T) met with hesitation & questions back to the supervisor that didn't suggest well trained staff.

Another problem was the WiFi - it was so unreliable as to be pretty much useless. You could argue that honeymooners shouldn't be playing on tablets, but the reality is we all like to check in on the world, read the news, update photo's to Instagram. Another facilities problem was the shower, first we had no hot water on arrival (was fixed a few hours later), and then when we did use the shower it was so badly designed that the bathroom flooded, not just a little, but inches of water we had to slosh around in even after expending all towels to dam the tides. It was a shame as each room has it's own theme, and has clearly been thoughtfully (and well) done, the lack of getting basics like plumbing and WiFi right significantly detracted from the experience.

The Spa I didn't use, my wife did however and had no complaints.

Overall I'd suggest it's great for a night just for the Art Deco, but no more

This does not live up to the Relais & Chateaux experiences we have had elsewhere. On check in on a Sunday we were told that the restaurant was close. We had just let our driver go so then had to put an emergency call into the Agency to get them back. Although the room was just OK the towel, robes and linens were worn and needed replacement immediately. The telephone did not work and they were unable to get it to work. The people were nice but the story kept changing when we reported to the agency that the restaurant was closed. They manage to somehow do some "lunch" but it was not up to our other experiences. We ended up leaving early so did not get any value for money other than a shower. The rooftop garden was a disaster and things were falling apart. I would never go back and would advise others to take a miss on this.

Dear travelers,
We read your comment due to the bad experience during your stay in our hôtel.
All parts of criticism are studied and sollution will be found in the coming days.
Regarding the restaurant, it is true that the closure is effective on Sunday, as we note in all our contacts and communications elements, especially with agencies. But the dishes on the menus are provided by a team on duty, with a service at the "Salon Bel", in your room or on the terrace. This is important and appreciated by our regular customers.
The garden on the top floor of the hotel is used daily by our customers either at the hotel or outside.
We appreciate your comments and are sorry not to have met you. Your feedback is useful to improve our work.
Again thank you for your testimony.

We had no GPS so without our Moroccan driver we would never have found our hotel which is squeezed into a small very swanky residential area within easy walking distance to the main market (medina). Even taxi drivers within 1/4 mile didn't know the name or the street or hotel.
IT WAS WORTH THE SEARCH !
Reviewers have written that Casablanca is a one nighter and my wife and I would agree, although as we left town for Marrakesh, we discovered the beach area which looks just like the South of France but is a taxi ride from the medina---which itself is not notable (especially if your headed to Marrakesh, Fes or Rabat). The hotel is really well done. The restaurant is decorated very nicely and the food and service were exceptional. The manager (sorry no name but he's French from Lyon) was perfection personified and provided guidance and even a map and tips on a lunch spot en route on the morning of our departure. Highly recommended !

Interesting place, nostalgic, great staff. However, the public areas were not as clean as they should be. Also, you should not stay on a sunday as the restaurant and bar are closed.... Surprising!
We booked a junior suite: yes, very junior, certainly not a suite.
Last, location is hard to find for taxis.
Overall, very disappointing. Last I am surprised the Doge is a Relais & Chateaux: certainly not at the right level

Dear traveler,
we have read and understood your comment and we thank you . This analysis allows us , with our teams to strengthen our procedures and household cleaning .
We inform you that the restaurant is closed on Sundays, but "menu and carte" are availables all day, with a service performed in your room or on the terrace and of course in the the bar open all day .
All suites are individually themed with different surfaces from each other , all furnished in existing spaces since 1930 , mostly .
Finally, it is true that the new taxis have trouble finding us, but our situation in a typical small street of art deco district of Casablanca is now sought after by our customers accustomed to this calm.
We look forward to having the pleasure of welcoming you again to Casablanca in a near future.
Sincerely,

This was a unique and tasteful stay in a gorgeous art deco building in the heart of Casablanca. We did a 2 hour art deco walking tour that commenced at the church one block away from the hotel. Our room was the Scott Fitzgerald and had some photos and writings relating to the author, which really allowed us to absorb into the art deco era.

The service was very personal. I like hotels where one is seated in a quiet quarter for the check in process, and the check in was done in the library area. Arrival into the bedroom was followed by lovely mint tea and cookies. The manager on duty also helped us book a lovely seafood dinner at Ostrea. Service was very friendly the entire duration. The French manager in the morning was very kind, and even offered us the hotel car to the train station. Our only issue with the service was that we tried to have the hotel help us book a train ticket for us, emailing and calling many times, but each time it seemed that this couldn't be completed.

There's not much to do as a tourist in Casablanca besides the mosque and walking around (as far as we encountered), so we would have skipped the city altogether if it weren't on our way from Feb/Rabat to Marrakech. But if I came back to Casablanca again, I would definitely stay at this unique and beautiful hotel again.

By the way, many taxis didn't know where the hotel was. I suggest loading the location on your phone first if you do not have data turned on.
