If you are heading to Marrakech or Fes or even Rabat, then don't bother visiting the Ancienne Medina of Casablanca as there is not much to see here in comparison.

If Casablanca is your only stop then you may want to pay a quick visit to see the oldest part of the city but be prepared to be hassled to buy in the busy market place.

If you want to shop for souvenirs then you are better off heading to the Habous (a.k.a. the New Medina) for a more relaxed experience.

I had a very unpleasant and almost spooky experience there and some of the people who have visited me since thought the same. It is not a touristy medina like those of Fes or Marrakech, but it remains a very poor and run down part of Casablanca. If you want to buy souvenirs from Morocco, go to the Habous instead!

This medina does not have the vibrancy and intrigue of Marrakech. It seemed more squalid and dirty with refuse more prevalent. If this medina is the first visited it will have appeal and surprise but lacks the panache of other similar sites.

The medinas are always worth a visit especially if you want that different type of gift. My tip is to quarter the amount they first ask for then go lower again

A 20 minute walk from the large mosque brings you to this gem. Okay, so it is somewhat dirty and there are people everywhere but I felt perfectly safe walking around carrying the latest iPad to navigate around the winding narrow alleyways of the medina. I saw a thriving community of children enjoying life, playing and shouting at their friends. Why not buy a mini loaf of bread for one Dirham; I ate mine in a small cafe across the street whilst watching a heated argument in Arabic over something. Enjoy, you won't see any tourists here!
