“Wonderful Stay in Fez!”
Reviewed 20 December 2013

We had a lovely stay in Fez! Dar el Ma was very clean and comfortable, and everyone was very friendly. The room was large, and there was even a little balcony reading nook (perfect for kids). The rooftop terraces were fantastic - a great places to hang out. Houda took wonderful care of us: delicious breakfast, directions, tips for the bath house, and she also does henna if you are looking for a unique souvenir. Good wifi, too! I would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Just two rooms... so you can't go wrong!

My friend and I rented Dar el Ma for for 4 nights in November and we couldn't have chosen a better place to stay. The house is perfectly located - a short walk from the blue gate and a moment away from one of the main streets, but peacefully quiet inside. The house is spacious and comfortable, with a great rooftop to enjoy a sunset drink and listen to the evening call to prayer. Houda the housekeeper is fantastic too - whipping up breakfast every morning and answering questions about Fes and life in Morocco. Joe was also really helpful by quickly answering our email questions, and nothing seemed to be too much trouble. I'd recommend Dar el Ma to anyone going to Fes, and it's incredibly good value for money. Thanks Houda, Joe and Claire for a great stay. Your home was a highlight of our trip around Morocco.

Room Tip: Both bedrooms are lovely. They are separated by the open courtyard so are quite private from each ot...

Claire and Joe bought this old riad (a traditional stone, wood and stucco house in the Middle Age medinas of Morocco) in 2006, and with the help of some talented local workers, brought it back to life in an original Moroccan style--but with modern plumbing and electric wiring, tiled kitchen, and sliding glass roof panels over the central courtyard skylight. The Ferhana room was spacious, with a high ceiling, lovely carved wooden shutters with stained glass looking out over the courtyard, and a nice sitting/sleeping loft accessible by a ladder (great for kids). The bed was comfortable and enough blankets were supplied for the cool November evenings. The best part is Houda, the housekeeper/arranger/translator, who prepared large traditional breakfasts, translated our English and mediocre French into Arabic when we asked, and was very helpful giving directions for getting around efficiently within the rabbit warren of "streets" of the Medina, which was our favorite in Morocco (the widest street is about 2m, no cars are allowed, but watch for the donkeys carrying wide loads). Check out Joe & Claire's photo book showing the process of deconstructing and rebuilding their riad over at least 6 months, all supported by donkeys carrying everything in and out--the patience and trust required to have pulled this off successfully is admirable. If you are lucky, you will be the only guests and have the house to yourself...

Room Tip: Both of the available rooms are quiet, spacious and private.

My boyfriend and I had an amazing time at Dar el Ma. The whole house is designed to perfection and is incredibly comfortable, spacious, clean and relaxing. The housekeeper Houda was also a great addition to our time here, she made us an excellent breakfast every morning and was always available when we had questions. The bedroom was very nice, large bed and very high ceilings and also lots of natural light which we enjoyed. The rooftop terrace is simply to die for and has one of the best views over the medina. I would recommend this riad to anybody & will recommend to any friends or family I ever have visiting Fes!

I have been in Dar el Ma twice with my family and both times I felt like having a home in Fez. The Dar is very well equipped with all the modern appliances that you may need and also have all the charm of a traditional Fez house. Our daughters enjoyed all the little details of the house. After a long walk in the old Medina we really appreciated the peace and the beauty of the house. Houda really helped us in everything: from getting ready for a bath in a hamam to good advices regarding where to go and what to see in Fez. She also served us wonderful breakfasts in the terrace.

We arrived in Fes at an especially busy time, two days before Eid al Kebir (Feast of the Sacrifice). There were hundreds of tourists in groups, clogging .the streets, plus Fassis returning home for the big holiday. Walking through the narrow streets was almost impossible.

What a relief to return to Dar el Ma! Tucked into a narrow street between Telaa Seghira and Kebira, it's easily reached from Boujloud. This is significant for those of us advancing in years. You can walk downhill to Souq Attarine, the Karouine, and Moulay Idriss, everything in the heart of Fes, then walk easily to Rcif, and catch a taxi around to Batha, and simply walk downhill walk to Dar el Ma. Telaa Kebir, one of the big main streets of the medina, literally means,"the big ascent", which it truly is.

We relaxed on the terrace, removed from the craziness that was unfolding in the streets below. It's also a good prospective of where we had been, a good view of the big green roof of the Karouine Mosque. Houda, the wonderful, sweet, girl who cares for the house was an additional benefit. As an English Literature major at the University of Fes, her English is remarkable, and her advise on shopping and reasonable prices a huge help.

The house, itself, is well worth a visit to Fes, representing Fassi wealth and fondness for exquiste surroundings. The family with me had never been to Fes and were fascinated with the maze of stairs, doors, lofts, and rooms.

I'd definitely recommend Dar el Ma as a beautiful place to spend several days at a very reasonable price. Thanks, Dar el Ma!

Dar el Ma was a great start to our trip. A treat to stay in such a lovely place. So much work and care has been done to make Dar el Ma what it is! Loved the comfy bed, breakfast, terrace and central location.

We explored the souks for hours, ate cactus fruit, pet donkeys, saw the tannery and explored the gardens.

I highly recommend Dar el Ma!
