“Unforgettable stay at Riad Le Calife...merci beaucoup pour tout!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 November 2010

My husband and I came here on our honeymoon, and Riad Le Calife was our only stop over in Morocco before returning to Spain for the remainder of our vacation. Our time at the riad was truly incredible, and we owe it all to the hospitality and generosity of Alex & Yasmine.

My husband had booked our room (the Diamante Suite - SPECTACULAR!) and made our travel arrangements as a surprise, so I knew very little about what we were doing in Fes and when. Upon arriving in the city and seeing the hustle and bustle of the streets, I was a little bit intimidated. The riad driver picked us up, gave us a little background on the area and dispatched us to the riad. We followed the waiting staff through the winding streets to the yellow building and when the door opened....WOW.

Alex & Yasmine warmly greeted us at reception (along with their little dog, Darwin), and gave us a brief tour of the property. They inquired about dinner reservations, tours and other interests, and before i knew it, we had plans to go to Riad Arabesque for dinner (one of the most unique and exciting meals I've had) and a tour the following day of the city and the medina (incredible!).

Aside from the owners and staff catering to our every need, the property was absolutely beautiful. Yasmine explained that they had bought the riad and renovated it over the past few years...the courtyard with the koi pond and fruit trees was amazing...the roof deck provided panoramic views of the entire city....even the lobby/study and dining rooms were well-appointed and well-decorated. Our suite had every little luxury we could imagine. Little fez hat boxes with jordanian almonds on our pillows. Bath products with rose water and orange blossom. intricate tile ceilings with carved wood beams and furniture like you have never seen. truly unique and unforgettable.

and the food was absolutely on par with everything else. delicious breakfasts and dinners that took into account the moroccan culture but also contemporary gastronomy. service was flawless, and meals were so quiet and romantic at times, you barely noticed the other guests and felt like you were alone in the riad. My husband is still raving about the cornes de gazelle cookies and roasted cauliflower soup.

one note about the city...when we ventured out on our own, we occasionally fell into tourist traps. Yasmine & Alex gave us great guidance on where to go & what to do so we avoided these sorts of things moving forward. although the city is safe, we had riad escorts hail us cabs, walk us to the atm at night, carry our bags, etc. which made everything all the more pleasant.

I don't feel that I can adequately do the riad justice with this review, because our vacation was that wonderful. Everywhere we went, the people seemed to know of our riad and the friendly owners. We even received a very nice email from the Alex & Yasmine upon our return to the states, thanking us for our visit. I find it hard to believe that anyone could write a review on this riad that wasn't a five star review - but go see riad le calife for yourself!!

This was my first trip to Morocco and we started our trip in Fez. My husband booked Riad Le Calife based on online reviews and their website, and our expectations were far exceeded. The Riad is a wonderful oasis in the midst of the bustling Fes Medina. We were greeted by the wonderful proprietress Yasmin and her fabulous dog Darwin (yes, as in Charles) and she and her husband's impeccable taste was immediately obvious. Our room, Diamante, was beautiful and comfortable, the small bar off the garden was a lovely place to enjoy a glass of wine after dinner, and most surprising of all, the Riad boasts a fantastic kitchen for breakfast and dinner that is only open to guests. We loved it and would return!

We stayed at Riad Le Calife for two nights and were dissapointed overall given the strong reviews on tripadvisor. At the time of booking this was ranked #1 and having stayed in other Riad's in Fez, we would not agree with this ranking. I think most over rated was the service. We would call it average at best and we are pretty simple people so we don't expect over the top service. The few brief interactions that we had with the owners made us feel that we were almost a bother, that they really were not into making guests have a great experience. While the Riad is quite nice, there was no "life" or "feel" here. The roof deck is very nice and was a great place to start the day with breakfast and end the day by relaxing under the night sky and reflect on the great days we had in Fez. Overall there is nothing "wrong" with this Riad, but we feel there are better options out there.

We booked this riad because of it's #1 rating on Trip Advisor and it actually exceeded our expectations (the pictures don't begin to do it justice). The phrase "hidden gem" is possibly a bit overused but that's exactly what this riad was, tucked away within the crazy lanes of the Fes medina. The place was spectacular, beautifully decorated by the young husband-wife owners from the upper terraces to the inviting bar. Every bit of it was a delight for the eyes. We booked the "Rubuis" (Ruby) room and would recommend everyone do so. It is the only guestroom on the top floor, located between the twin terraces, making it feel as though we had the entire floor and balconies (with their awesome views) all to ourselves, really great. To be extremely picky, the sofa in our room was a bit incomfortable and the lighting could have been better, but other than this the place was flawless. The staff was also very special, warm and helpful. Overall, just a great place and the best we experienced in Morocco.

A wonderful experience our hosts were the best we came across in Morocco, even the dog Darwin was very friendly. If your going to Fes don't miss this. Also try to take a cooking lesson in the kitchen my wife really enjoyed it.

My husband and I will daydream about returning here. Yasmine and Alex make you feel at home from the moment you arrive. The whole riad is stunningly decorated with beautiful objects elegantly placed. From the roof terrace to the bar lounge to the individual rooms, the whole place is breathtaking. They have an in-house dinner which should not to be missed. From their great staff, massage accomodations, relationships with the best guides in the city, and brilliant dinner recommendations, I simply can not imagine Fes without Riad Le Calife.
