“Cheap and comfortable”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 March 2012

Situated in a fantasic spot right in the Fes medina, this Dar (a sort of riad) was cheap and comfortable but in a fairly basic way.

We stayed for here 6 nights during our 5 week Morocco visit in 2011.

Hard to find initially because it's in the medina, it is ideally situated a few metres off the main souk alley. Sofia, the chief cleaner and organiser there, is friendly and efficient and the place feels safe and secure. Rooms vary from small to large - we had a nice large room but the place is a bit run down and basic. Still, we weren't paying Hilton hotel rates.

The drains definitely don't smell that good, but then again everything in the medina is hundreds of years old. Hot water was also a hit and miss effort, couple of showers were stone cold, others were nice and hot, and a few were luke warm.

Didn't try the 3 Euro breakfast as there's loads of fabulous eating places in the medina within a couple of minutes walk

Good points: Fantastic location. Nice and quiet. Secure, never felt that our bags were going to be tampered with. Place is constantly being mopped and cleaned by Sofia and her off-sider.

Would we stay again? For the price and location - definitely yes. Just except something clean, comfortable but basic and that's what you'll get.

Room Tip: Get an upstairs room, they are larger and away from the small downstairs central courtyard where eve...

This riad (dar?) was well located and everything functioned as it should (ie wifi available in the atrium ground floor, hot showers, quiet for sleeping). Despite its good location it was a challenge to find initially (but I think most places would be?). If you can find the "clocks" landmark (and Cafe Clock) if you keep heading south (with Blue Gates and clocks behind you) you will soon find a sign-posted alley heading to the left (east). My only negative (and it's not so much about the accommodation) is that we asked the riad staff (Sofia and Said) to recommend a city-guide for us and we wasted 300dh and a whole day with a total buffoon called Mohamed. Wise after the event the whole experience with this awful guide was hilarious, but at the time it was boring/scary/challenging etc. We asked for cultural/architectural/historical information and instead got this suspect man who talked mostly about his troubles with his ex girlfriends and bought/smoked drugs in dodgy alleyways then tried to sell us carpets. Too funny!

I stayed here in early 2010 (I've just joined TripAdvisor, so I'm catching up!) with my husband. The staff were incredibly lovely and the rooms were clean and tidy. What I loved was how quiet the place was - even though there were many guests, I couldn't hear anyone - really peaceful. Also, good value for money, and very close walk to the Blue Gate.

I have recently travel to Morocco with family and friends and we have stayed in Dar Bouanania riad. It is true that the central courtyard of the house looks pretty good, but the rooms are not the best. We must accept that the price is cheap, but paying the same in other cities in Morocco we had more quality and cleanliness. The rooms smelt bad and the bathrooms even worse. The furniture in the rooms was damaged. The breakfast was not good, as they offer packed orange juice (in Morocco is so easy to drink natural orange juice!), jam, coffee and a lot of bread for 3 euros. With 2 euros you can eat in Fez a good breakfast (natural orange juice, yoghurt, Moroccan crêpes and tea or coffee).
We didn't like the recommendations of the staff (the guide and the place for dinner). It is better to take an official guide and other places for dinner than his friends.

We had a great 4 days in Fez based at Dar Bouanania. The hostel was beautiful and very atmospheric and we appreciated really feeling like we were in Morocco! It was comfortable and has a great roof terrace to hang out on. The only downsides were that it was quite cold and damp and the bathrooms were pretty low quality.

The staff were fantastic during our stay, Sofia was so helpful with any problem we had, even allowing us to use a bedroom for an extra few hours on our departure day after half our group got food poisoning at Cafe Clock! One of the other hostel staff, Abdullah, also gave us a free tour of the Medina and was frequently available to help us with anything we needed out and about. The staff at Dar Bouanani are without doubt it's greatest asset!

All in all it is a great value for money hostel with good access to most places of interest; I would highly recommend using it as a base for a stay in Fez as long as you are happy with basic facilities.

This hotel was very comfrotable and they were able to give us a room for four people for a reasonable price. As others have mentioned, the bathrooms are pretty stinky but otherwise the rooms were clean and comfortable. No rooftop pool or rooftop dining area, but it was comfortable and a good value with an excellent location and nice staff.

There is a difference between a riad and a dar. Both are traditional Moroccon houses, but the riads have a real open air patio or courtyard. Dar Bouanania has a small patio but it's not open air (there is a kind of glassroof covering it on the highest floor), is more the common room between the 3 rooms on the ground floor. You can sit there but if you talk to loud at night people in the ensuite rooms might be annoyed by that. There is also a kind of roofterras with only 3 or 4 chairs but not nice and not very interesting.
We booked a room with private bathroom, it's only a few euro more. Ours was on the ground floor and has 1 double and 2 single beds. We decided to sleep in the single beds because the other one sags a bit. It was rather a big but dark room. The location is really ok for exploring the medina, just around the corner of the souks (where you buy fresh juice or fresh 'killed' chicken) and all the restaurants. It's in a quiet alley but one night we heard people outside yelling and screaming like they were fighting.
The first morning we did not have any hot water, it seemed to be that the gascylinder for heating the water needed to be replaced, what the friendly and helpfull staff did within half an hour.
Breakfast is not included in the price, you can order it extra, we chose the "big" breakfast., but that only means that you get a big amount of bread bread and bread, very little marmelade, coffee/tea and juice ;-( So you'd better go outside an have yourselve a freshly made breakfast in one of the small shops, like we did the next morning.

Nice experience but next time we will prefer somewhere else to stay. Good for backpackers because of the value for money.
