“Pampered”
Reviewed 15 January 2012

Palais Amani is where you stay if you are looking for a luxurious boutique hotel experience in the heart of the medina. Not as intimate as traditional tourist riads' but better for turbo-boosted pampering.

We stayed in two rooms over the New Year 2011 into 2011. Our first room was small-ish and very comfortable – adjacent to the breakfast terrace. We then moved to the completely over-the-top Grande Suite which was...well, what can you say about a room that could be used a tennis court and still feel intimate and comfortable? We walked in and spent 10 minuted running around trying to discover the various en-suite dressing rooms, bathrooms and wardrobes. This suite is seriously grand.

The food is great, the roof-top bar fantastic for sipping a cocktail whilst gazing out over the city and all the staff are amazing. Kriselda and Sonia will probably be your main contacts – they work extremely hard to make sure you feel part of a very pampered family.

Go on, treat yourself!

Room Tip: Grande Suite

Our family of four adults stayed at the grand suite of Palais Amani for four nights in December 2011. We loved all aspects of the hotel - the building is authentically renovated and beautifully decorated to give guests the unique Fes experience without compromising the comfort; the grand suite where we stayed was luxurious and comfortable; the staff were friendly, informative and helpful. They arranged transportation, customised guided tours and special meals with efficiency and to our satisfaction; the roof top breakfasts, the cozy candlelit dinners in the restaurant and the Moroccan tea in between were all served with a smile, and spoilt us thoroughly; the hammam was relaxing and we appreciated the privacy; and above all, the location within the medina was perfect for the ultimate Fes experience. We have no hesitation in recommending this hotel/riad to others. We would love to stay in Fes and Palais Amani again.

Room Tip: The grand suite, which is beautifully decorated with local arts and crafts, generously accomodated...

Kriselda was very helpful even before we arrived, giving us directions and even checking in on us. (we were driving from Marrakesh). The rooms are not huge but very pretty and very well kept. You could see real effort was put into the place. We enjoyed the kitchen with a nice mix of Moroccan and European selections. The terrace where you eat faces a pretty courtyard and there is a nice roof to sun on as well it has a small bar open in the evening.

The outside resturant recommendation would be the only disapointment, when we arrived there were 2 wide-eyed tour groups and us in the entire huge, sad place. We felt like lamb to the slaughter. It was unclear to us the motivation behind the selection.

This is my second review of Palais Amani. I did not think it would be possible to be any more enthusiastic about this wonderful hotel, but after spending five days here, and getting to know most of the amazing staff, I find that there is even more reason to say it is simply the best. Kriselda and Sonia could not have made us feel more welcome. There enthusiasm for making everyone feel warmly welcome, their attention to every aspect of the details which make Palais Amani such a delightful place, is amazing. We had the pleasure of celebrating New Year's Eve here. The gala dinner was fabulous, but the party, where we got to know other guests as well as many of the staff was the highligh of our stay. We hope to be back soon!

Room Tip: We love the classic rooms.

We were tired and cold after a long train ride from Tangiers to Fez. Arriving at the Palais Amani was like coming home and seeing family after a long journey. Abdel the owner and his assistant Kriselda were so gracious. They served us miint tea and chatted with us like old friends as we warmed up around the space heater (this was the middle of winter). After such a gracious reception we found delicious dinner waiting for us in our rooms. I have been to many 5 star hotels around the world and none of them match the hospitality of Palais Amani. The garden courtyard is beautiful as well as the terrace. The food in the restaurant is also superb! I would highly recommend this lovely riad.

We chose to have our Fez hammam experience at the Palais Amina, finding it to be a reasonable compromise between the European style spa experience (ranging 80 - 100 euro) and the traditional hammam experience done by the locals (ranging about .50 cents). My husband chose to have a massage.
The setting is beautiful, truly. The service was friendly, although the hammam attendant, spoke VERY little English and made for a confused at times experience. While fun and relaxing, there were times when I was unable to communicate properly and therefor did not receive all the services I had wanted. But, this was my problem, not theirs. Just keep that in mind if you do not speak French or Arabic. By the time I got dressed I didn't want to go back in and I didn't want to get the girl in trouble cause I didn't speak the language. I would suggest having the services verified by the English speaking receptionist first and conveyed to the attendant.
My husband considered his massage to be relaxing and pleasant, but that's all. It is not a good, work-out-the-kinks kind of massage. Just something to keep in mind.
All in all, a relaxing pleasant break at a reasonable cost for the whole family during a vacation to Fez.

Palais Amani not only lived up to our expectations, it exceeded them. The photos will give you a sense of the beauty of this painstakingly renovated ryad in the old medina. But sometimes those old houses suffer from poor plumbing, sewage smells etc...Not so at Amani, which offers all the modern comforts, down to the last detail. The stunning bathroom even had a powerful professional grade hairdryer - an unusual touch, even for high end hotels!

But what made this a truly outstanding experience was the unfailing friendliness and welcome extended by both management and staff. They went out of their way to accommodate our every need and make us feel at home. Our dietary requirements (salt, fat and gluten free) unfortunately made it difficult for us to enjoy the lovely set menus, so at our request, the kitchen prepared unsalted vegetable soup especially for us, every evening. The staff also organised taxi transfers to and from the airport, to Volubilis, they walked with us to place Seffarine which we had not managed to find on our own(!).

Everything from the leisurely breakfasts on the sunny terrace overlooking the patio, with its orangne trees and fountain, (at the end of december - we were very lucky with the weather), the hammam and massage to relax after long walks through the medina, was lovely. A wonderful, relaxing and hassle free stay.

Room Tip: Misryah 1 was accessed through steep stairs which may not be convenient for people with reduced mob...
