“A special combination of history and hospitality”
Reviewed 24 April 2012

Staying at Le Jardin Des Biehn on my first trip to Fes was very special. If you like history and want to stay somewhere that is unique then this is the place. Each of the villas are different as the rooms have been restored based on the original buildings - it gives each room a lot of character while maintaining the sence of history. The internal gardens are lovely and provide a wonderful outlook from the rooms or the cafe which is co-located in the complex. The rooms are comfortable and have a lot of little special touches which give them character and add to the Moroccan experience. Michel is a very gracious host and it was a shame I only had one night in Fes - it really wasnt long enough to enjoy all that Le Jardin Des Biehn has to offer. You cant drive all the way down as this is within the walls of the Medina so wear comfortable shoes and/or ask for assistance with your bags.

Room Tip: Each room has a unique character but not all have balconies - if you want to have a view over the ga...

We have enjoyed our stay in Fez with the Biehns for 2 years in a row. It is a well thought out property with everything that you need after a day in the souk or visiting the hypnotic city of Fez. The food in the cafe is fabulous, the property beautifully decorated, the staff beyond friendly and helpful, the garden a paradise. We enjoyed a cooking class, hamaam, massage, tours and interesting conversations with the owners as well as other guests. Everything about the property is a delight to the senses.

There is no way we would have enjoyed our few days in Fez half as much had we not stayed at Le Jardin des Biehn. The garden, with its beautiful flowers, herbs, vegetables and birdlife, is a welcome break from the mayhem which lies outside in the Medina! Michel and his wife have created a sanctuary of elegance & calm, whilst importantly, maintaining the integrity and cultural history of the property. Michel's long association with the antiques industry is clear and the rooms are beautifully done. The service is immaculate, from the charming Malick who manages it, and the rest of the staff who could not be more amenable and eager to please. The food is as good as everything else - we ended up eating here most evenings as it was far better than most other places in Fez. If we go back to Fez we would not consider staying anywhere other than here - in fact, it may be the most pressing reason to go back!

Within 30 minutes of booking this Riad through Booking.com I received an email from the manager, Malik, welcoming me and ordering a taxi from the airport (which I hadn't even requested!). Everything about the service received was just right from Malik's helpfulness and courtesy, the gentleness of the staff, to the personal hospitality from the owners Michel and Catherine. We were even upgraded on account of the fact we were celebrating my wife's birthday, and beautiful flowers were waiting on arrival - a lovely little touch. Clearly the development of this Riad has been a labour of love and it shows in all the fine details from the beautiful garden with its water features and fruit trees to the finer detail of all the rooms. Check out the Pasha's Suite - it is a magnificently restored set of rooms ideal for honeymooners or even a family. Attention to detail in the comfort of the beds, luxurious towels and when we told Malik we were leaving in the evening on the final day he suggested we kept the room for the full day (at no extra cost) and they even cleaned it whilst we were out! I travel a lot and rarely do I receive such fine personal service. Had hamamm, massage and my wife even had a Sophrology session - all very relaxing and made for a highly enjoyable stay.

The location in the medina is good, easy to access and on a quiet street. I would recommend hiring a guide to find your way around the medina - again arranged by Malik - who found us the very informative and charming Abdulfarrik who was incredibly knowledgable about his home city, informative, friendly and knew just where to take us.

The only (minor) criticism was the cost of the food and drink at the Fes Cafe at the hotel which I felt was a little too pricey for the location, albeit extremely tasty and nicely served. We ate there twice. We also ate at the Maison Blanche nearby one night for dinner - a wonderful experience that I would certainly recommend if you want to splash out a little.

All in all we had a wonderful time - hats off to Michel and Catherine for creating such a charming venue and we will return with the kids next time! Merci beaucoup!

Room Tip: All of the rooms have their own charm and character

Set right inside the Medina old town of Fez, you enter into a world so different, so stunningly beautiful and so relaxing away from the bustle of the streets, where you hear only bird song and the trickling of water. we ate each night at the riad and the food was varied and well presented and the staff were willing to respond to special dietry needs, willlingly and imaginatively. Everything about this Riad is of the highest taste, and the attendance and attention of the staff and owners is second to none. Its harmony and exceptional comfort will remain in our memories for ever.

Stayed 3 nights at this lovely riad over Christmas. Were collected at the Fes train station by a car and ushered into labyrinth of the medina. Once inside the door, my childhood dream of 'secret garden' was just right there. While we were exhausted from flight from Singapore to Casablanca and a train ride to Fes, we immediately felt total calmness thanks to lovely sound of water, smell of fresh oranges and lemons, and amazingly beautiful décor. We were delighted by lovely décor of the room, the Circassian, from the bedcover to the color of the shower booth. The air-con was on and somewhat the smell coming into the room was strong- we almost thought there were over 10 sheep dancing on our bed. After 10 min we got used to the smell and there was not problem. The bed was cozy and comfortable. The toilet was also nicely decorated but awfully cold -- put a towel on a toilet seat so that we didn't have to jump every time. Found shampoo, soaps and the body cream made of argan oil really good (so much so we had bought the same body cream as souvenirs). Breakfast was a great spread and there was something new every day. Loved the orange juice and tea. My husband loved the various types of Moroccan breakfast delights while I enjoyed toasted bread. We had our Christmas dinner at the café and it was indeed lovely. Service at the café was excellent and turned out to be the best among all the restaurants we had visited in Morocco. Michel was a very charming host and always impeccably fashionable. His daughter and the rest of his family were there for Christmas. They were all friendly and Michel made sure that everyone enjoyed special dinner. It was a shame that I did not speak a word of French - It would have been quite interesting to speak with his wife, Catherine. Her daughter was once there to translate and she was very informative. They came out to send us off on our last day despite of our early departure at 730 am. Such kind gesture and the total package of this beautiful riad have made our stay memorable and pleasant. If we have a chance to go back to Fes, we would definetely stay here again.

One suggestion to my fellow travelers who wish to pay in cash is that you should bring plenty of Moroccan dinars. I thought my payment would be in Euro as room tariff on the website was indicated in Euro, but was informed by a manager that nearly 10 percent would be added on in accordance with the government regulation. So I went out to exchange my Euro on the last day just to make cash payment.

Everywhere you look at Le Jardin is a perfect picture. The beautifully tiled and rendered rooms are filled with unique and exquisite fabrics and furniture. The perfumed "jardin" a haven for relaxation and rumination, not to mention the birds. Staff are courteous and friendly. We stayed for 9 days and the linen was changed every day and rooms left immaculate. The owners of this very special establishment are charming and unpretentious, and having our own restaurant made it feel like "being home". Once back from the excitement and confusion of the medina you can completely relax. When I think of our holidays which took us around Europe and Morocco, it is to Fez and Le Jardin that I wander. Than kyou for such a special experience.
