“The Perfect Spot in the Medina”
Reviewed 24 April 2014

I can't extol the virtues enough of this magical spot in the middle of the Fez medina. For my birthday we rented the riad for a group of our friends as we toured Morocco. Robert is the absolutely most helpful guide to this exotic city and he arranged everything from the porters as we arrived to the city guides to the best restaurants and cooking schools. The attached restaurant, "The Ruined Garden", is an incredible addition and it was so pleasant to meet with our group each morning for a delicious breakfast as we planned our outings. Robert also coordinated the actual birthday dinner on the terrace overlooking the garden with one of the most delicious cakes (chocolate apricot) I've ever had. And he managed find us plenty of rose and vin gris. That was most important. :) It was a spectacular experience and we can't thank Robert enough for his genuine interest and joie de vivre. A must for your trip to Fez!

We had an amazing time at Riad Idrissy. The moment we arrived, Robert welcomed us warmly as if we were good friends. The riad is beautiful - so many nooks and restored Moroccan architecture. The original doors are stunning. Our room was awesome - very spacious and full of light. The food was delicious - from the breakfast with many different kinds of Moroccan breads, fresh fruit, mint tea and yummy marmalade. Dinner in the Ruined Garden was also very delicious. Fes was our first city on our Moroccan itinerary and it remained our favorite. The staff at Riad Idrissy were so friendly and warm. Truly an experience not to be missed. THIS is the place to stay to make your experience in Fes unforgettable.

Room Tip: all the rooms are awesome

My wife and I spent a week at the lovely Riad Idrissy. Everything about Riad Idrissy was exceptional. All of the rooms are unique. Ours was on the first floor and had access to a large terrace overlooking the garden and the surrounding neighborhood. Our room had wonderful tile work and intricately painted wooden shutters and a cedar ceiling that was stunningly beautiful. One of the nice treats is awakening each morning to find a basket with a thermos of coffee and hot water for tea left at your door. Most mornings we had our breakfast on the terrace. One concern that we had prior to arriving was would the adjacent restaurant be too noisy and a distraction. Very pleased to report that this was not the case. The Ruined Garden restaurant just added to the ambiance of our stay in Fes. We ate many dinners and lunches at the restaurant and found the food to be really great. The menu is very interesting and the wine selection is very nice. Riad Idrissy has all the great amenities a traveler would want. Things like comfortable beds, nice shower, great food, fabulous location, beautifully restored riad, and lots of peace and quiet. However, the real difference maker is Robert and his staff. The level of service they provide to their guests is exceptional. Robert is a wonderful host. He is a very interesting person and truly made us feel
at home. The opportunity to meet Robert and his team enhanced our stay in Fes.

My wife and I stayed for five nights and enjoyed everyone of them. The room was clean and large with an enormous comfortable bed and an adequate sized bathroom with a sink, toilet and shower. Plenty of hot water and acceptable water pressure. Outside the bedroom was an indoor sitting area (shared with one other room) and a very large outdoor terrace. Every morning coffee and hot water for tea was left by the bedroom door. The breakfast was simple but more than adequate with fresh orange juice, fresh fruit, yogurt, coffee and various freshly baked flatbreads. No TV but a strong WiFi signal on our floor, it was weaker in the garden.

The restaurant was excellent, we ate in four out of five nights. One can choose either the garden, which feels like it is hosting a big family gathering than an impersonal restaurant, or indoors besides a cozy fireplace. The menu is exceptionally creative and very unlike the standard Moroccan restaurant fare of munchies and tajain and extremely tasty. One night they specifically cooked pigeon pie for my wife as she had read that it was a Fes speciality.

The hotel is about a 10 or 15 minute walk in from the closest gate and the “Blue Gate” and five minutes from one of the main streets of the Medina. Take advantage of the hotel offer of a car from the station or airport. Its a little expensive but worth it, a driver to greet you and a porter to carry one’s luggage down what initially appear to be impenetrable streets.

Robert was a fantastic host, efficient, personable and a fount of information.

A fantastic place to escape the demands of life. Right off the busy street of the medina it was a quiet and tranquil escape. We particularly liked the idea on several mornings that we simply slept in and decided that we were not going to do much of anything less have an exceptional breakfast in the garden and play it by ear. It was nice after a day of walking to discover that we could plop right back in the garden and eat dinner. You must try the volubilis chicken. I did two nights in a row. Watch out Robert, I plan to come back and sweep your cook, Najia, back to the states. Her breakfasts were to die for. If I was my grandmother I would have been wrapping up that Beghrir bread and putting in my purse to take home. This place is exactly the taste of Morocco someone needs to experience.

As you can see from everyone's reviews, this place is brilliant. Aside from really excellent rooms (we had one with a beautiful ornate ceiling), and windows facing onto a lovely inner courtyard, and food that we returned to on two of three evenings (and two lunches!), the service was so friendly. Not only Robert - who took the time and interest in every one of his guests - but also his supporting cast. All of the staff would say hello, they were happy to provide a guide from the riad to another restaurant at night (also recommended by them), and we had a good farewell drink with Robert, his friends, and two other guests. All in all, this was our home for three nights, rather than a place to stay. Thanks to Robert, and all the staff!

P.S. The breakfast was also really good!

We couldn't have had a better Riad in Fes. Superbly restored, with generous sized rooms and comfortable king sized beds. Robert is an exceptionally excellent host and has introduced many delightful touches, thick plush white towels, basket with tea or coffee outside our door in the morning, delicious fresh breakfast on the balcony overlooking the Ruined Garden Restaurant, continual supply of Moroccan wine and soooooooo helpful with advice and assistance. The Restaurant is charming and the food delightfully Moroccan, the whole of Robert's team were friendly and attentive. I cannot praise this Riad enough, thank you for making our stay so special.

Room Tip: Central in the Medina so easy to access the rest of Fes
