A beautiful old palace which , although it is good, needs some renovation... the rooms are clean and beautiful , we stayed in a suite in the palace proper which needed some makeover... The service and the staff were courteous and impeccable... breakfast on the outside terrace was great.

It depends what you are looking for.

They both have a good central location at the edge of the medina, have 5* amenities and friendly staff.

Riad Fes is a small riad composed out a three large houses and some additions. The rooms are really large, especially the suites with very high ceilings. The lounge, the courts, the terrace are really beautiful. The restaurant is just fine, nothing special, but the staff is really serviable. The pool is beautiful but small and has sun only during few hours a day.

Sofitel is much less exciting. It was renovated about 20 years ago and we can see it.Now it is at the limit of 5*. Its only advantage is the large, sunny swimming pool. And the tennis court, but is it really useful in such an exciting city?

Clearly, we preferred Riad Fes.

Good location. We were able to walk everywhere. View from the room was excellent. Hotel Pool was nice. Overall the hotel is a bit old though well kept. Rooms needs re decoration but they are clean otherwise. I would not say that the hotel is not 5* as it has all the facilities but it is definitely old one and needs work done.

We stayed at Palais Jamai Fes for 3 days of our 10 day Moroccan trip. The views of the Medina are jaw droppingly beautiful! The staff is primarily french speaking but were very accommodating and helped us arrange 2 excellent tours and immediately changed our room after the AC failed.

The pool and spa are well kept and meticulously cleaned. Well worth a visit.

Room Tip: Medina view

I've stayed here for almost 50 years. It was built in 1879 and recently, reading Paul Bowles' The Spider's House (his best novel by far) I realised, sitting on my balcony, he must have been in this very room describing the scene below. Much of the book is set in the Palais Jamai. Big rumours that the owners (Mamounia in Marrakech) are taking it back from leasers Sofitel and "doing it up" - which it does need. Check out the lifts/elevators - my favourites in the world - DO NOT DESTROY THEM! Carved wooden interiors. The view of Fes is stunning. This city was the biggest in the world between 1173 and 1183. The walled medina - no cars - is virtually just as it was then. Cuisine needs improving but it's a lovely hotel and my, that view every morning and, even better, at sunset.

Room Tip: Get the Medina side for that view.

This is a lovely property adjacent to the Old Medina which makes it perfect for exploring the Medina but this location necessitates a cab to go anywhere else in Fez. The room was nicely decorated but a bit small. The best feature was the balcony overlooking the pool and garden area with a breathtaking view of the Old Medina especially at sunrise. On the one occasion we had to seek advice from the concierge, he could not answer our question. There is a small boutique with wonderful things on the property but you have to seek it out because its location in the gardens down below the pool level make it difficult to find.

We were with Naomi Boutique Kosher Tours. Eric and Naomi are the best leaders you'll wanna travel with. The hotel went out of their way to make our trip as pleasant as possible. The chefs accommodated us above and beyond the call of duty. It turned out to be a most memorable experience.
