Very plush looking hotel but the usual slightly chaotic Moroccan approach. Our room was quite good but we only had a side view (fortunately of a Jacaranda tree in full bloom). The pool area was pleasant to sit in and we used their bar for drinks and coffee as they were quicker and more efficient. Drinks served at table in the restaurant were quite pricey and you had a system geared up to charging to your room but as we were pre-paid as part of a tour this involved trips to Reception to pay. Reception were helpful in changing pounds/euros into Dirham as obtaining Dirham can be messy as you cannot pre-buy back home. The restuarant was loud, large and noisy and the waiters were rather headless chicken mode - fortunately we were self service buffet mode. Food was OK. Seemed to be a good hotel for the place. Some fellow travellers found local cafes and we found a good local crafts outlet.

The hotel tries to tout itself as higher class than it is. The rooms, food and overall amenities are average at best. But the promise of wifi that doesn't always work and a disorganized serving staff that may give away your seat should you dare get up to refresh your plate at the buffet can begin to diminish the experience. Not to mention the gross negligence taken by cleaning staff who leave all the doors of an entire floor wide open while cleaning the rooms. Or one male staff member who used a key and tried to walk directly into my occupied room without knocking at 8 am. Thank goodness for the door chain. The rooms are noisy either from traffic or cheesy lounge music until late in the evening depending on your vantage point. The hotel caters to tour groups so if you aren't staying long and don't mind any of the above, it will suit a traveler with lower/flexible standards.

After checking in we found that the toilet was not working and the safe was locked, I informed the receptionist and we went for a walk and to eat as well, on our return the receptionist stated that all was fixed! Typical liar this went on for a couple of hours until it was sorted out. This was by far the worst experience, the hotel offered a very good size pool with quality surroundings and waiters worked well.
Breakfast was average with poor service. The buffet diner was a bit better.

The hotel is in need of a refurbishment if it is to attract tourists from the west.

Room Tip: If you are staying for more than one night ask to see the room before you check in, mainly to see if...

The Royal Mirage may qualify for 5* on paper, but it is not in practice. Overall we found it a little shabby, and some aspects were not of a good quality. However, it may very well be one of the better options in Fes.

The first thing we noticed was that there was an ashtray in the elevator(!), followed by a the smell in the hallway that had once served as a chimney. Frankly, many of the common areas needed to be gutted and re-fitted and re-decorated - in a 5* hotel I expected to be wowed, not put of by nicotine as I search for my room in the dimly lit corridor. Furthermore, the ashtray in the toilet is better positioned than the toilet roll.

Buffet dinners and breakfasts had reasonable choices, but quality was not fantastic. Coffee was average.

On a positive note, the pool was great, with helpful attendants to give you a towel as soon as you wandered down.

TV had a reasonable selection of channels, and WiFi was free.

I think it was a sheraton in its former life. Large property with a great pool and lots of action. Not a traditional moroccan riad but a nice change. The rooms were large and clean. We had a patio and I think all the rooms have terraces. Its a busy area so ask for an inside courtyard room.

Room Tip: take an inside courtyard room...but there is a band playing at night until about 11 which you can he...

I only had one night in the Royal Mirage but was given a suite for no extra charge. Having had a bad experience at a previous hotel this made me feel like a princess. The rooms were luxurious, the service first class and the food excellent. As it was close to the old medina I was able to see much on my short stay. The staff were very helpful.
