“Fabulous Riad”
Reviewed 10 May 2011

We just returned from a 9 day tour of Morocco, from Fes to Marrakesh through the desert and the Atlas Mountains. We loved it all but Fes was our favorite spot and our stay at the Riad Fes was perfect in every way . Its Moroccan ambience and architecture is glamorous, beautiful and romantic. The service is impeccable. We were upgraded from a junior suite to a King suite - the Sultan - which was large, comfortable and had every modern amenity. The food was delicious. We had so many expectations and the Riad Fes met them all!

This hotel is absolutely wonderful. As you weave through the confusing and sometimes dingy streets of the medina, spotting the Relais and Chateau awning leading to this hotel is like finding an oasis in the desert. The hotel is serene, impeccably maintained, and manages to be stylish while remaining true to its history. This was especially noticeable in the pool area, where the old and new are blended together perfectly. I wanted to live in this hotel and never leave. While there, be sure to visit the rooftop terrace for a stunning view of the city.

The only complaint I can manage is that the wifi signal is not strong and the walls are thick, so you have to be in the lobby area to use wifi. Oh, and the bar closes at 10:30, which is a shame, because we could have stayed until the wee hours and there did seem to be a number of guests milling about with nothing to do after hours since the town is pretty dry. But those are nitpicky problems that are far overshadowed by the fantastic, courtly service we obtained. This hotel's personnel strike the perfect balance between being involved and personal, and giving you privacy and independence. We were greeted in the lobby with mint tea, our bags were whisked away to our rooms, and the manager sat with us to explain the features of the hotel, to give us an overview of the area, and to get the information needed for check-in. The staff worked with us when we needed to receive a late-night delivery (nothing illicit, I'm afraid), and when we needed to check out at an obscenely early hour.

We had the deluxe twin room with two twin beds, and the adjoining room with one double bed. They were spacious and had a/c, a flat screen tv and a separate seating area. The rooms overlooked the pool area, and the bathrooms overlooked the adjacent gardens. The décor was tasteful and the rooms were perfectly clean. The bathrooms were charming but completely functional, and the amenities and linens were high-end. We did not have a true shower, just a large tub with a spray nozzle, but one has to make accommodations when traveling to a foreign land and when staying somewhere this old, so it really was not an issue.

My only regret is that we only had two nights here.

Dear Sirs,
Thank you very much for your very kind review. It was a pleasure welcoming you among us and are very happy that you enjoyed every moment of your stay.
As you have seen, we have some of our rooms overlooking the bar and andalusian patio. That is why we close the bar and stop the fountain at 11pm, to avoid disturbing our guests. But, it is always possible to have a drink in the smoking area or in the room, as we have two persons working from 10pm to 8am. Never say no is our motto and we are always ready to fulfill every request our guest may have.
Thank you very much again for your understanding.
Best Regards
Mrs. Awa DIAKHATE

My husband and I stayed 3 nights at Riad Fes and as this was our first introduction to Morocco, it gave us very positive feelings. The Riad had beautiful public areas and a comfortable bedroom. We arrived late and had dinner at the Riad which very convenient. The buffet breakfast selection was lovely and you could order eggs to your specifications. A most enjoyable and comfortable start to our holiday.

We drove up a bit anxious as to what we'll find. When we came through the doors, we were blown away. The hotel is amazing, the rooms are amazing, the food was delicious, and the staff waited on us like we were the most important people in the world. Each room was different design and shape. It was like staying at a friend's mansion. It's inside the Medina, so it's totally unexpected to find this luxurious palace, right in the middle of these tiny homes on tiny alleyways. If you go to Fes, this is an absolute must. You can't appreciate Morocco from a chain hotel.

Where do I start? What a beautiful hotel! Everything about this wonderful riad has been so carefully put together. Our deluxe double was an absolute joy to stay in. The numerous lounges and seating areas keep you marvelling in wonderment days into your stay.
The staff were exceptionally charming and polite. The breakfasts were the best during the whole of our stay in Morocco.
After the hustle and bustle of the medina Riad Fez felt like a magical secret retreat. If you are visiting Fez this really is the only place to stay.
We arrived late and a bit frazzled on our first night after a delayed train but the hotel manager was so gentle and calming and kindly suggested we pop our bags in our room and with no rushing at all make our way down to dinner - half another after the kitchens officially closed.
- just one last thing; whilst the restaurant at the riad provides a good evening meal I would recommend making your way to the 'clock cafe' on at least one night for a different but equally lovely type of experience

At $305 (inc tax) p.n. for a deluxe/junior suite, I think this is pricey hotel but given I was staying during the xmas holidays, there were few choices within the Medina. However as most of the shopping and restaurants are in the Medina, I would recommend staying in the Medina.

Riad Fes is a beautifully restored Riad (actually it looks like it is four Riads combined) with spacious & nicely decorated rooms. The four courtyards are each unique and there are plenty of space on the rooftops to get away from the crowds and have a relaxing view of the city. The Riad is a couple of blocks from one of the main streets so it might be better to have Riad to arrange a car with a driver that can lead you to the hotel. Otherwise as you walk through the Medina, just ask and someone will point you the direction or even take you there for a small tip.

Breakfast was included which was basic but good. Avoid eating at the restaurant for lunch/dinner as we were disappointed with all dishes served.

A gorgeous hotel in Fes...not very easy to get to as no cars can be driven down any of the medina streets, but well worth the walk. The lovely staff greeted us with rose water towels, clementines and cookies, and were extremely helpful. The hammam treatment is a great value, though I was disappointed to find there was no fitness center; according to staff, this is presently being built. The room we stayed in was right off the central courtyard of the riad (exquisitely beautiful) and with 18 foot ceilings and gorgeous carpets, curtains and doors, we were very pleased with the decor. I did have one problem with the shower, which flooded the bathroom one evening. Fortunately, the staff was extremely accommodating and immediately swept up all the water. Wonderful restaurant and breakfast.
