“Gorgeous Moroccan Oasis in the Fes Medina”
Reviewed 25 November 2013 via mobile

My husband and I stayed at the Dar Roumana for 5 nights earlier this month and it was the favorite part of our trip. We had no idea just how great the location was when we booked, but as soon as we arrived, we were so happy to be staying in a true moroccan style home in the Medina. It is just a short walk away from all the culture, markets, artisans, and landmarks in Fes. Everything about the Dar Roumana is beautiful- intricate woodwork, gorgeous colorful tiles, handmade rugs and lanterns in every room. It is incredibly clean and peaceful and all the staff were so helpful and polite. We loved the restaurant Dar Hatim they had recommended. And our tour guide Rashid was excellent! Dar Roumana is just an exquisite oasis in the beautiful crazy city of Fes and I just cannot recommend it enough!!!

We stayed two nights at Dar Roumana In early October 2013. Very nice property. Probably our favorite in the 11 nights we were in Morocco. Staff is very accommodating, room well appointed, and if you want to be close to where the action is you'll love it. The food was even better than the rest. Great value.

Room Tip: I don't think there was a pool or fitness center.

A friend and I stayed at the Dar in Sept this year as part of a month's holiday and it was definitely the highlight of our time away. From the moment we started planning our stay, when Vanessa patiently answered my endless questions, to the day we left Fez, the Dar and it's staff exceeded our expectations. We stayed in the gorgeous Yasmina suite (with an extra bed added) after a recommendation from a friend who had been there a few years earlier. We spent our first 10 mins in the room pinching ourselves and wondering if we'd woken up in someone else's life. The room is beautiful (as is the whole Dar) - with spectacular plasterwork and tiling. Neither our own photos nor the website's really do it justice.
The Dar offers a wonderful range of activities, and can arrange guides to the Medina. We had a guide on our first day there, which was a great way to get our bearings and adjust to the sensory overload of the Medina.
The staff are wonderful. Vanessa helpfully and efficiently dealt with various small issues we had with ferry bookings etc and arranged transport and porters when we arrived and left. Nezha serves lovely breakfasts on the roof terrace with its amazing views of the Medina and Mohamed smilingly dealt with our every request.
Having the haven of the Dar to return to each day made our stay a wonderful one and I would urge anyone considering a trip to Fez to stay there.

Room Tip: We adored the Yasmina suite, which is beautifully decorated, spacious and air conditioned. It has it...

Dar Roumana was the perfect embodiment of our vision of a stay at a Moroccan guesthouse. The gorgeous mosaic tiles, huge carved wooden doors, ornate ceilings and refreshing courtyard fountain greet you as you enter from a typical Fes back alley in a quiet area of the Medina.

We stayed in the Tamarind suite on the second floor, which is very private, lovely and quite spacious. A delicious breakfast is prepared and served daily on the rooftop terrace with a spectacular 360º view of the Medina.

The entire staff, led by the lovely Vanessa, was friendly, gracious, and attentive to our every need. They make you feel like you are in a home and part of the family during your stay. Vanessa's husband, Vincent, is a superb chef who serves Moroccan fusion cuisine in the courtyard on most nights. Reserve early, as the restaurant of five tables is open to outside guests as well. Our dinner there was the best food we had during our 8 night stay in Morocco, and one of the best meals we have had anywhere.

We loved our stay at Dar Roumana and sincerely recommend it without reservation. Enjoy!

Room Tip: The rooms on the first floor just off the courtyard are not as private as those on the second and th...

Although you wonder if you will ever be able to find your way through the labyrinth to and from this little gem in the medina, the route quickly becomes familiar after Vanessa's expert direction. We were greeted at the train station and taken to gate of the medina closest to the Riad. We were met at the gate and taken to the door - thank goodness we didn't have to find it ourselves. We stayed here four days in the Argana suite, which is on the third and top floor. If you have knee problems, forget it, but we loved it because it was the most private of all the rooms and it has a window. Many of the other rooms lack privacy, simply because of the nature of a riad where all the rooms open up into a central area. Breakfast on the terasse is a delicious variety of juice, fruit, yogurt, bread, eggs, tea/coffee. Vanessa, originally from Australia, via England, is a perfect hostess and even organised for us to spend the first day of Eid with a local family. A delightful stay!

Room Tip: The rooms on the ground floor are dark as they have no window and open directly onto the interior co...

Where do I begin? We stayed at Dar Roumana for two nights - part of a three city tour of Morocco. During our travels we stayed at two independently-owed Riads - including Dar Roumana - and a five-star boutique Riad-hotel. Dar Roumana was, without a doubt, our finest experience in Morocco.

Located in one of Fes' back alleys, its probably best to arrange for a transfer to avoid having to find your own way. We were welcomed by Vanessa who spent a good 30 minutes sitting with us, taking us through a map of the neighbourhood and giving us a tour of this wonderful old home. Beautifully restored, Dar Roumana's rooms are spacious (we were in the Roumana Suite), comfortable and feature all the amenities you'd need (shower, bath, cupboard, safe and a large lounge area).

I almost feel guilty calling it a hotel but for want of a better word, the hotel's terrace offers spectacular views of Fes and is the perfect setting for breakfast. Breakfast itself is fresh and plentiful - although, 8:30am could be a little late for folks with health issues (as it was in our case) or who simply want an earlier start to the day

The team that runs the hotel is gracious and clearly understands the difference between great service and in-your-face service, which is refreshing. Something as seemingly minor as preparing a packed breakfast for us - because we had to leave before dawn to catch a flight - goes a long way in leaving a lasting impression.

I can't recommend Dar Roumana highly enough!

TOP TIP: Regardless of whether you're an early riser or not, try and wake up to watch the sun rise from the hotel's terrace. Its worth the effort!

Dar Roumana, and my second experience of a Riad after a stay in one in Marrakesh, was once more breath-taking.

Reviews by superlatives are rather dull (just seen Book of Mormons...) but this was everything we could have hoped for and more: a great, quiet location within the Medina, a magnificent renovation, stunning courtyard with woodwork and stone carved walls that could make even diehard TV viewers switch off, gorgeous sitting room, breakfasts on a lovely roof terrace with pomegranate trees, and, the jewel in the crown for us, the bedroom.

We stayed in the first floor Tamarind Suite. High ceilings, three beautiful ornate windows, lovely furniture, eucalyptus-scented pillows and a sitting area. The only slight downside with staying in a place like this is the realisation that it's often bigger than your own (London) bolthole. Oh well, that's what holidays are for.

The welcome, service and staff were good too, especially Vanessa's pre-arrival advice to my endless questions.

All in all, an easy and genuine recommendation.

Room Tip: Avoid the two ground floor if you value privacy, go for Yasmina if money's no object though you...
