“Owners and staff are special; so is the riad”
Reviewed 13 May 2014

We stayed at Riad Laaroussa for 3 nights during our 19 days of travel in Morocco. By the time we arrived, we had stayed at a few other properties. We enjoyed the rooftop view and the lab, Bob. We missed our dog at home and having him curl up next to our feet while we were on the roof was sweet. But, Fred and his wonderful staff of primarily women, is what made us really like this place! One afternoon, the women made lamb chops and chips for the three of us and it was one of my husband's favorite food memories during our Moroccan journey. And, although Fred meets people from all over the world everyday, he takes time to have a conversation with most of his guests. He talked with us and I saw him in the mornings conversing with other guests. We were impressed he had a passion for meeting and talking with visitors, after so many years of running a riad.

We stayed in the Green Room and it's traditional and lovely, the way one would image a room in a riad in Fez to have been 500 years ago. We had a fireplace, spacious bathroom, and beautiful original tiles throughout the room.

Again, we really enjoyed the women who work here. They were fun to talk to and do a fantastic job of looking after everyone!

Riad Laaroussa is a very special place - the building itself meticulously and authentically restored, the fittings and rooms luxurious, the courtyard peaceful and so geen, and the views from the rooftop stunning! It was the attention and attitude of the staff and owners, Fred and,Kathy, however, that really made our stay so special. The staff all appear to love working in the riad, and make every effort to engage and please. Every need was taken care of, and it was so easy to arrange day trips and a driver. Before we had barely mentioned we would like to go somewhere special for dinner, Fred had booked a restaurant for us and arranged a driver.
Our room (the green suite) was spacious and comfortable although the large desk did get in the way and more hanging/wardrobe space would have been appreciated. Also the bathroom whilst amazing to look at and terribly "authentic", was not very comfortable, and a practical bath would have been great. Most importantly however our room was very quiet and dark, and the bedding luxurious. A Wonderful Stay and Highly Recommended!

Room Tip: Only two rooms are on the ground floor and the others up steep stairs which may be a problem for som...

This riad, the hosts Cathy and Fred, the staff, and Fez itself all came together to create a magical sort of experience that I have not found at anywhere else before. The riad has been beautifully and dutifully restored-- what was clearly a long process with attention to detail. You will find that many riads in Morocco have an owner (who might live elsewhere or abroad), but with a manager who oversees the daily necessities and functioning, and who lives onsite/nearby. This is not the case with Riad Laaroussa, which is very much the home and passion of its owners. Just a few of our favorite memories of the trip include the gorgeous rooms, tea time after a day out on the town, on the rooftop overlooking the city, and indulging in the delicious and freshly prepared dinners accompanied by local wines. Everyone at the riad was friendly, warm, and helpful. If you have a chance to come to Fes, definitely make a point of staying here!

The Riad Laaroussa is a special place to stay in Fez. The decor and renovations are impeccable. The gracious "hosts" are Cathy and Fred who lead a kind, personable, and professional staff. The spirit of the Riad is one of calm and welcome. The breakfast and other meals that we enjoyed here were excellent. The staff also helped us with guides and advice.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Red Room on the top floor

This place is excellent. Every facet of our stay was perfect. They were very helpful, although when you rely on their services (transport, guides, etc ...) they charge the tourist rate. Best to rely on their insight but book yourself (with the exception of dinner reservations which they simply make for you). But otherwise, they are extremely helpful.

Dear Pete,
Thanks a lot for your review. As always the best reward for us.
It might worth giving some details about Guides and transports pricing.
The public rate for an official guide is 250DH for half day and 400 DH for a full day.
Regarding transportation, the company we use charges as follow:
Pre booked Fez airport transfer is 200 DH with an English speaking driver driving a Hyundai air con Minivan waiting for you whatever delay you get.
Alternatively, one can get a regular taxi directly at the airport. They charge 150 dh and drop you off in the center of Fez, then you have to take a little red cab for another 20 or 30 DH to go to the medina (old town).
At the train station, a pre booked taxi is 100 MAD waiting for you whatever delays you get, but you can also get a little red cab for 20 or 30 dh.
Day trip rate is 1000 MAD for the day with an English speaking driver driving a Hyundai air con Minivan and again there are regular cabs (old white Mercedes) who can take you for less but again not the same service.
Hoping that this information will be helpful for future visitors to Fez.

Amazing, fabulous riad - so beautiful.

Facilities are stunning and finished to perfection. Amazing roof, garden and many relax areas. We hung out on the day bed in the roof for hours.

We had a suite - and just loved the triple ceiling height, fire place (set everyday for you of course!) with lounge area and cool bathroom. Fred and Cathy, the owners are awesome, very open and willing to chat, and the staff who run are just fabulous - nothing is too much trouble and they are genuinely lovely people who really care about your time in fez - fantastic customer service. Fantastic location as well

Food is great.

They also arranged for us a tour with hamido (sp?) of the medina- he was great.

Just stay here!
