A great affordable and luxurious hotel. The palace is walkable from the hotel. You need a taxi to get to the Medina but taxis in Fez are so cheap it doesn't even matter. I think our taxi ride to and from the Medina was about $3 round trip.

This a terrible hotel. The stuff is the most unprofessionel and treacherous I have ever seen. We booked 6 weeks in advance and they just cancelled our reservation a day before our arrival because they got a better business. Very mean indeed!

When we arrived after a half city 2E worth taxi ride, there were 2 girls at the reception. The main one (i guess) did not speak any English at all. Not even one word. Yet, to our luck, the other one understood some very basic English and could even speak it a bit. We have asked for two rooms on the same floor, to be with our friends, yet it took about 3 minutes for them to explain that they are fully booked. Anyway, throughout our entire stay we communicated with staff more through body language, but all in all we got our messages through. We were a bit disappointed when we had asked for a map of the city with our location - the receptionist explained everything on it, presented our location etc, then said that it's 50dirhams for the map! (5eur) Wow - remember, the half city taxi ride cost 2eur, tip included.
When I wanted to enter the room for the first time, the door was open. I have closed it and tried my magnetic key card - surprise, it didn't work. I checked the room no. on the card, it was the right one. Suddenly, to my luck and salvage, a 'technician' in a white robe appears and offers to 'reload' the key card; I don't know why but I doubt that it wasn't a common practice there.
We also got a Internet cable to use in our room - the connection was strong and reliable.
The hotel itself and the rooms are very clean and well organized, housekeeping did their job good. However, the rooms were a bit small by European standards even and the bathroom was minuscule, with a very tight shower cabin in which the shower curtain would constantly stick to you during the sower, making it very frustrating.
Right next to our side of the hotel there is an office building, apparently some outsourcing computer company, with staff working there 24/7 making it quite noisy, but acceptable.
Breakfast was the very same as throughout Morocco - bread, butter, jam, honey, some strange salami, orange juice, coffee, pastry.
As for the location of Zahrat al Jabal, considering that taxis are so cheap - it's well positioned in a good part of the new city, yet far from the medina. It's well signaled and on a very popular boulevard. They don't serve any alcohol, nor can you find any nearby.
A good choice all in all, considering the low rate we had.

We stayed for three nights in this hotel on our first trip to Morocco. In general the staff at this hotel were very unhelpful in providing basic information about the area, when we asked for a map of the area, they were rude in responding and couldnt tell us where there was a tourist information centre, where we could find a map or an internet cafe. As they only provided Wifi and we were without laptops this made it very difficult to plan our day trips. For a three star hotel, the 'buffet' breakfast was below par, the street food of the same type was better cooked and better quality. The rooms were quite small, they didn't provide the hairdryer they had advertised, and the Safe in the room was broken and they failed to fix or replace it when we asked them to. On the positive side, the hotel was very clean and close to the train station.

When we arrived at the hotel we were pleasently surprised. The room was small but tastefully decorated and clean. For £30 a night including breakfast it was good value. However the pleasentness of our stay was bitterly overshadowed on our last day when at the end of our SELF SERVICE breakfast we were harrassed for a tip. I refused saying that the breakfast was self service and that a tip was only necessary for a service provided. After check out my girlfriend and i were walking to the train station and I jokingly said "I bet they'll follow us for a tip" however to my surprise when I turned around a waiter was behind us saying that we'd "forgot to tip". I was disgusted by this and of course told him where to go. But then again this type of behaviour is rife in morocco.

OK, for the price (around 36 EUR). You can't get by feet to the Medina, but you are quite nearby the centre of the new city, with restaurants, cafés, shops etc. The rooms are small, but if you spend just the night at the hotel, it doesn’t matter. From the restaurant on the top floor you have a nice view of the new city. Breakfast was ok.

We arrived into Fez after 8pm, after a long day on the road and without a hotel booking. We noticed the neon sign for the Zahrat al Jabal and went to check it out. The hotel seemed pretty busy but did have double rooms available for 57 Euros per room per night including breakfast.

The hotel is located in the new town area of Fez and feels safe and secure. We had hoped to stay in one of the more traditional riad style hotels in old town Fez but having a car made this impractical. At Zahrat al Jabal you can park the car on the road outside.

The room in the hotel was fine, very clean, with a very large double bed, ensuite bathroom with a shower, balcony, and TV. Good value for money.

We ate in the restaurant on our first evening, the service was very quick and the food was ok. Unlike some hotel in hotels in Morocco this hotel was dry and doesn't serve any alcohol.

The breakfast served in the hotel was also fine, a buffet style continental breakfast.

The staff at the hotel were friendly and helpful. However, we were slightly annoyed to discover that we had paid for the first nights' accommodation in cash after being told the hotel didn't accept visa cards, to then discover when extending our stay for an additional night that the hotel does accept visa cards.

We also had a waiter knocking on our door at 11pm to tell us they had forgotten to add 5 Euros to our dinner bill, which is something we thought could have waited until the morning.

In summary, this was a good, very reasonably priced hotel which provided us with a great base from which to explore the historic city of Fez (however, the old town Fez and Medina is about a 5 minute drive away by car.)
