“Overpriced, but nice raid in good location”
Reviewed 14 May 2012

I would reccomend Maison MK as it has a great location in the old part of Marrakech, and it is very nice place to return to, with good food, and great staff, however is is definately overpriced.
I have just returned from a 3 night break in the Master Suite/ Room 1. Firstly, the rooms are lovely, however there is no way that Room 1 is worth 400 euro / night, over the 300 euro / night rooms which I looked at such as room 3. The extras such as a sparkling bottle of wine, bath and manicure / pedicure included in the room rate, we had to mention after arrival rather than offered on arrival. One has to consider competition in Marrakech and overseas at these prices and it is overpriced.
Overall, the staff are eager to please and very friendly, although there are phones and intercoms to find staff in communal areas, service is very slow.
The chef spent 3 years training with Gordon Ramsey, and although I did not eat the taster menu on an evening, I did eat at the riad, and the food was good. However at 55 euros per evening menu, it puts itself in competition with great restaurants in London such as Gordon Ramseys restaurants and it does not compare.
The spa is small, and there is no real swimming pool. My girlfriend had treatments and she did enjoy herself.
The trips arranged were great, and I would definately reccomend the walking tour, and the atlas mountains were we ate with a Berber family and it was a fantastic experience.
Maison MK, repeats a contradictory phrase to describe itself as, "barefoot 5 star". It does certainly not have the finishing touches, service and ammenties you would expect of a 5 star establishment, but charges similarly to 5 star prices compared worldwide.
Overall I would reccomend to stay here, but do not stay in Room 1 over the other rooms.

Room Tip: Do not book Room 1.

Hi AFD13

Many thanks for taking the time to post your review on Tripadvisor the week you got home. We are always delighted when our guests go out of their way to recommend us to others.
I'm glad you enjoyed the experience that maison mk offers guests – and we are sorry you were so unwell with a headcold during your stay even with the special health drinks we made to carry you through that. So glad you recovered for your last day into the mountains – I told you you wouldn’t want to miss that trip as our owners have tried and tested the very best for our guests so they get a really authentic berber experience!

Just a few points really that I would love to take this opportunity to address for you and now, of course, everyone else reading. We love that us that our guests seem to get such a wow factor when they arrive and the excitement that you showed especially when you entered the master suite was infectious. We advertise our master suite package, including the extras, not only on our website, but in the client brochure & emails we sent to you before your arrival. We started with the free sparkling wine with dinner on your first evening, we don't like to dictate when you have everything but we like to make sure you take advantage of the manicure/pedicure and candlie-lit rose petal bath before you leave so we really didn't see that there was a problem . We were so glad to see someone making use of all the freebies and not everyone uses the cinema room and popcorn like you did!

Comparing a riad ( effectively a private house) in the Marrakech medina with an international chain of 5 star hotels is a little difficult because they are totally different styles of accommodation. With regard to value for money, 5 star, room 1 etc - we are finding the very opposite view from our guests and room 1 sells like a hot cake because of the value for money so its a difficult one to comment on – perceived value can be quite subjective. Staying in our master suite, room 1, was a real treat for you and your partner and I know that you were looking for something a little more special above our other rooms and were persuaded by family to take room 1. I agree with you, room 3, is also lovely but a lot less grand and spacious so room 1 is twice the size and has a double height ceiling which really makes it stand apart from the other rooms. All of our rooms are unique in design, colour, size and outlook so on this one it can only be a matter of personal preference.

Finally, I'm not sure if it's reasonable to comment on the quality/price ratio of gastro mk if you didn't eat there - it's a real shame that you weren't feeling well enough to take your table at gastro mk on your last night. The light dinner at Eur 30 for 3 courses that we are able to offer our maison mk residents seems to have been good value for you though, so I'm glad you made the most of our roof terrace on your first night by enjoying dinner up on the top terrace.

It was a real pleasure to have you stay and hope you will return one day ( perhaps to room 3!), and thank-you for publicly allowing us to address your points.

Emily, manager maison mk

We had a wonderfull stay at the hotel. The staff were exeptionel. The hotel were very charming and cosy. The rooms, pool and closet were to small. We did not get value for the money. The restaurant had a great restaurant.

Room Tip: Rooms were small.

My partner and I have just returned from a 4 night stay in Marrakech, staying at the utterly magical MK Maison. Having found this Riad on Trip Advisor we are always dubious as to whether it will live up to expectations and the excellent reviews given previously, and I can honestly say they are all true, MK exceeded expectations and then some.

From the moment we walked into MK Maison to the moment we left we felt totally relaxed and at ease, the Riad is like an oasis of calm, only 5 minutes walk from the hustle and bustle of the main square, and souks. We arrived early evening and was greeted by Emily (MK's Manager) who gave us a tour of the Riad and showed us our room.
I felt like we were walking around with our mouths open at just how stunning the place was. We were then showed to our room which was just as delightful, leaving me even more excited to be spending 4 nights there.

We ate at Gastro MK that evening which was very romantic, we had the 5 course tasting menu created by head chef Omar, who introduced himself at the end which was a nice touch. The food was delicious, we enjoyed every single course, and would say it was well worth the money.

There are 12 staff at MK, to 6 bedrooms. They are all very attentive, but in a way that you hardly notice they are there, allowing you to totally relax. Every inch of the Riad was spotless, our room was cleaned every day, and turned down every night with a little surprise left on our pillow.

We would highly recommend the cooking lesson with head chef Omar, this starts at 10am and finished around 1.30pm, and also the Hamman treatment.

Thankyou to all at MK who made our stay so amazing, we honestly cannot thank you enough. We will most certainly be returning to Marrakech, and to this Riad, it was a totally magical trip.

Room Tip: There are 6 rooms at Maison MK, we stayed in Room 6 which was simply perfect.

My husband and I wanted to try somewhere different for a 3 night Easter break and decided on Marrakech. After some debate we agreed to stay in the middle of things within the Medina rather than in a big hotel on the outskirts. We felt this would give us time to experience the highlights in the time we had with easy access back to our Riad if or when a break was needed from the hustle and bustle. We chose Maison MK initially fromTrip Advisor and then from the Maison MK website which gives a really good insight into the care and attention to detail we could expect. We were not disapppointed. Ahead of our departure from the UK we received an email from Paul the owner containing a host of information about our forthcoming trip. We arrived to a warm welcome from the manager, Emily, and shown to our delightful room. The trip exceeded all of our expectations both in terms of Marrakech and Maison MK. The location is great - just far enough away from the middle of things but only a 5 minute walk from the main square. We tried the taster menu and the spa and would highly recommend them both. Breakfast on the roof terrace was a perfect start to each day with great food and fantastic views of the Atlas mountains. All in all a great trip in a fantastic Raid - we would not hesitate to return and hope to do so in the future.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 3 which was beautiful and the only room with a view of the inner courtyard.

We had a most fabulous stay at maison mk over the Easter weekend. We felt very very well taken care of, in an unobtrusive, thoughtful and respectful manner. The staff are superb, the accommodation is beautifully appointed and whenever we were out it seemed that someone crept in and made it all perfect again.

The roof terrace is a haven from the souks, the noise, the pollution. Again, the service is unobtrusive and if no-one's about there's an intercom to the kitchen! The gastro mk meal is well worth the cost, the food is a unique take on Moroccan fare and meeting the chef Omar after was a nice touch.

I'd go back again and again, there are loads of recommendations from staff about where to go and what to do, and we didn't try even half of them!!

My family and I (wife and two adult children) spent 4 nights at maison mk last week. Service was exemplary at all levels and this, to my mind, is what really defines maison mk.

My one concern over the airport transfer (getting from the taxi drop off point to the riad (230 metres) failed to materialise as, contrary to my reading of the website, we were met at the drop off point.

Rooms were good, lunch menu limited but well presented and fairly priced

Spa was excellent and should be experienced. Location is also good/convenient for those wanting to walk round the Medina.

Good food at gastro mk but at €252.50 for 4, with a bottle of local wine, I felt it was slightly overpriced.

Eating in the evening needs to be planned. In addition to gastro mk, there is a limited but good snack menu. However, this means that, aside from perhaps one go at gastro mk, you will generally want to eat out. We tried Katsura (good quality Japanese/Thai food well priced – €65 for 4 - but don’t expect too much atmosphere) and Le Comptoir Darna (twice as expensive, plenty of atmosphere, decent food and a shortish – 15 minutes or so – bout of belly dancing at 10.30pm.)

We also took a caleche ride paid for via the riad. The driver attempted to get us to pay a second time. Stand firm.
