Description: N full heart of the medina where merges tradition and modernity, an authentic restaurant has several years of perfectly preserved history. DAR ESSALAM is the first moroccan restaurant in Marrakech since 1952, it's here that the Hitchcock's movie "the man knew too much " was filmed. Come and taste our refined moroccan cuisine.

On recommendation from the superb Riad we stayed at, Riad Palais des Princesses, we dined at Dar Essalam on our final night in Marrakech and could not have asked for a more perfect setting for the occasion.

Although made famous by the filming of The Man Who Knew Too Much by Alfred Hitchcock, it clearly embraces its local culture and the interior has a wonderful, classic Moroccan feel which gives the restaurant a great atmosphere.

The waiters offer excellent service and always comes with a smile and a great sense of humour. There is a good selection of wine (important for those finding it hard to come by in Marrakech like us!) and even more importantly, the food was excellent.

We had a beef tagine and chicken/vegetable cous cous which were two of the best meals all holiday, and came complete with some fantastic entertainment (in particular, the two guys after 10pm) offering local music and dance which really compliments the food and provides a great traditional feel to the place.

It's only a 5 minute walk from the main Jemaa el Fna square and is absolutely worth a visit!

Good for a night out, food was average, entertainment was entertaining! The kebabs looked like the nicest dish.

Lovely meal with traditional music and dance although not for the Simon Cowell's amongst you.Set menu for a starter and one main with dessert, coffee and cakes was 250 Dirhams, drinks and service charge extra. We wrongly went for the 2 mains options (330 Dirhams) but sadly could't finish it. Staff were very helpful especially as we turned up early (2000 hrs) and due to Ramadan they didn't start service until 2030. They kindly allowed us to sit in the restaurant with a menu which gave us extra time to look at the decor in this 17th Century ex-Palace. Good idea to book a table as the local tour guides also use the venue.

During our six days in Marrakesh, we had walked past Dar Essalam everyday, it's intricate, traditionally decorated entry way tempting us. Finally, on our last night here, after reading other reviews, we decided to go in. And, we are so happy that we did!

It is situated inside an old palace. A gorgeous, old palace that even Alfred Hitchcock thought picturesque enough to film parts of "The Man Who Knew Too Much" (which we will immediately go and watch on NetFlix.) Especially after visiting other historic buildings within Marrakesh, it was incredible to sit inside one and live the sultan's dream for an evening.

We had no réservation, but were immediately ushered to a table with the best seat in the house. It is clearly a destination for tourists, based on the clientele, but we were prepared for that. We opted for the set menu which included an appetizer, main dish, dessert and, of course, mint tea. Everything that we had was presented with panache, and had flavor to back it up. We have found some of the dishes in Marrakesh to be woefully under seasoned. Not so here. The traditional soup with dates was fantastic, as were the variety of salads we received as our appetizers. Likewise, the tea was not tooth-achingly sweet for the first time in all of Morocco. I ordered the chicken pastilla, which did incur an extra cost, and my husband had the lamb tagine with olives. Both were incredible. His lamb tagine was perfectly cooked, perfectly seasoned. This was my first time having a pastilla, but based on what I had read, the execution was exactly what I had expected. It was delicious. During our excellent meal with excellent service, we enjoyed live traditional music, as well as a belly dancer, and a woman who danced and did other amazing things while balancing a tray of lit candelabras on her head.

Our tab, with a tip, came to about $75 for both of us, which included one alcoholic drink. It was, by Moroccan (and our) standards, an expensive night out; but the ambiance, entertainment, excellent service and stellar execution of traditional Moroccan food made it our perfect last dinner in Marrakesh.

The main eating hall, where I sat, is breath taking in size and atmosphere. The food and wine were very nice and the entertainment was great, musicians, dancer and belly dancer, all added to the mood. Good value for money but not budget eating.
