We were only in Marrakech for a few days, and decided to make it a real foodie weekend break. We were keen to return to La Mamounia since it's refurbishment, and we were not disappointed, we came for the buffet lunch,by the poolside, at the Pavillon de la Piscine, it was by no means cheap, but it's all about the whole experience, the surroundings were absolutely beautiful, and so peaceful after the delightful craziness of Marrakech, the staff were very attentive and informative, but managed at the same time to be friendly, and the buffet, well, I can only say it was outstanding, Moroccan salads, traditional salads, fish, shellfish, then a "grill"station where you could have food cooked to order, my husband had steak to go with the salads, then there's roasted meats with fresh vegetables, even macaroni cheese and mash! then there were Moroccan tagines and cous cous, then a whole patisserie station! and there were lots of different breads on offer as well, we spent a very very pleasant extended lunch time eating and drinking a glass of fizz, (drinks were not included in the price of the buffet) the cost per person is approximately £56, but it is an amazing way to spent a few hours, afterwards we walked around the gardens, highly recommend lunch here, just have a very small or no breakfast!

We were in Marrakech for Xmas, and quickly realized we were not going to find ourselves a Turkey Xmas dinner anywhere in Marrakech, so we decided to go for the next best thing, a good old slap up meal in a posh hotel.

We decided to head to La Mamounia for a drink one evening, we were hoping to get into the Churchill bar, but had been warned it was a dress to impress type bar, and I only had jeans, T-Shirt and trainers with me. However we walked into the hotel, and met a young lady who was extremely helpful, and we had a couple of drinks in the Churchill bar whilst we looked at the restaurant menus (there is an Italian, a Moroccan and a French restaurant), and Xmas specials. They had some expensive options for Xmas specials - but all began early in the day, and were all done by 15:00/16:00. We decided to go for a standard meal, and chose the Moroccan.

The cocktails were not too unreasonable - approx £15 a cocktail. After finishing we went back and found the helpful lady, who after many phone calls confirmed our reservation at the Moroccan restaurant at 19:00 on Xmas night.

So back to Xmas night and we arrived in the hotel around 18:00 for some pre-dinner drinks (approx £7.50 a 330ml bottle of Heineken). I spoke to the barman to enquire if I could start a tab with the drinks in the bar and add to the restaurant bill. He didn't really understand - and came over and explained the restaurant was fully booked. I re-iterated we had a booking, and after approx 15 mins he came over and explained it was all good.

Upon arriving at the restaurant each table is set in an alcove of 2 tables. The other table never showed up (good for us!) and on leaving I noticed the whole place was empty (we were there from 19:00 - 22:00). No idea why but this seems a common theme in Morocco to tell you places are full, when they blatantly are not?

The food iteself was stunning. Certainly not cheap - I vaguely remember thinking it was £45 for a kebab, but it was beautiful. The service was good, not too up themselves, just polite and chatty. It was a stunning experience.

After that we went back to the Churchill bar for a couple of cocktails, but we were so full from the food, we could barely stomach more alcohol. The Churchill bar is lovely - but both times we went it was empty.

I think perhaps the prices put people off of going, which is a shame because it impacts on the atmosphere. No-one wants to sit in an empty bar or restaurant. If they could attract more people this would get a 5. Is just the atmosphere that let's it down.

In no way cheap (!) but this landmark hotel is a great place to have a drink / meal on the patio if you want to experience the place without staying there. Enormous pool, orange trees in spacious gardens etc etc - and boules pitch!
