We had the most fantastic time when we stayed at the Riad Zam Zam earlier this month, a visit to celebrate my husband's 40th birthday. Whilst deep in the heart of heart of the medina it was an oasis of calm and serenity as soon as we walked in the door and I, unlike one of the previous posts ,would not have changed the Riad's location for anything ! It is almost medieval in it's ambience, hustle, and vibrancy, almost other wordly and yes, very different from ours but all the more exciting for that.
Emma, Marcus and Mohammed looked after us brilliantly and went to a great deal of trouble to ensure our stay was all that it could be. Our room was beautiful, the court yard cool and the roof terrace very chic !

We will be reccomending it to all our friends.

What a beautiful place to stay. We loved it Emma and Marcus could not have been more helpful . Emma has beautiful taste and the riad far exceeded our expectations. All the other guests agreed that Zamzam was a great find. Look forward to returning .

We arrived in Marrakech with great excitement and anticipation of our holiday ahead. We were picked up at the airport and driven as far into the Medina as possible, where we were met by a porter and escorted to our place of stay. A few winding, tiny streets later we stepped into an alleyway, turned the corner and infront of us was the most amazing light welcoming us into Riad ZamZam. We crossed the threshold and entered an atmosphere that can only be described as spiritual. A small, ancient Morrocan palace beautifully restored with sympathy and real class. Everything good that has been written here is true - but you have to experience it for yourself - words cannot capture the whole of the grandeur and elegance.

I was fascinated by the Morrocan lighting and was discussing, with fellow guests, my desire to have some for my home. Mo immediately sorted it out - the place where many of the furnishings in the Riad had been purchased was a five minute walk away. Mo sent for a boy from the establishment to come and collect us and take us to a shopping dream. If you are after Morrocan style for your home this is THE place. Everything is at wholesale prices (it is an export company) and they will arrange shipping for you and have it home in 2 weeks. Having selected large, beautiful, masterpieces of Morrocan handcrafted chandeliers, we went round the many rooms and filled up our shipment with silver teapots, coloured tea glasses, candle sticks, lamps, curtain tassles, and any number of hand made containers in all shapes, sizes and colours. Much of what you see in the souks is here and you don't have to haggle for hours to get a reasonable price (they even threw in some items free) and of course you got your complimentary glass of mint tea. We had a fabulous time.

Mo is the most amazing host. Nothing is too much trouble and he very quickly gets to know you and what you like (a cold beer would be waiting for me when I returned from the hussle and bustle of the Medina!). Mo is a very interesting and kind man, I felt in no time like he was my long lost Morrocan brother. And an amazing cook! The best food we had in Marrakech by far and good enough to compete with any clebrity chef! My daughter has many allergies so each time we would eat at the Riad Mo would ask her what she wanted - nothing was too much trouble, even her delicious chocolate ice-cream that he had to take an extra trip for! We met some lovely people, also staying at ZamZam and evening meals together were animated with fun and laughter. It truely was like being at the best dinner party with the best guests yet getting five-star treatment. Mo will even give you a Morrocan cookery course if that is on your agenda.

Towards the end of our stay I had the pleasure of meeting Marcus, a really lovely man who together with his wife Emma have dedicated themselves to this Raid and to providing their guests with the very best of everything. His stories of the restoration process were really interesting and he gave us a tour of the entire Riad. Each bedroom is different as are the on-suite bathrooms, and each a luxurious place to stay. The central courtyard is stunning with a 150 year old palm gracing it's centre and a stylish plunge pool to one side trickling water from an amazing mural of copper and light. The roof terrace is also fabulous with it's own hammam to the rear and seating and loungers around 2 sides. If you fancy lunch the barbecue will be lit and you can indulge in Morrocan burgers, kebabs and salads with really good Morrocan wine (the rose is as good as Sancerre rose). The views are stunning of the Atlas Mountains and Marrakech's rooftops to the fore.

I did not get to meet Emma as she was in London during our stay, but she setup everything for us before we arrived (pick-up from the airport, meal waiting for us when we got in with dietary requirements catered for, and the essential and very knowledgeable guide to show us around on our first day).

I cannot speak highly enough of Riad ZamZam and it's hosts and staff. I have travelled all over SE Asia and South America and this is the loveliest place I have ever stayed in, with an atmospere of a home away from home and a haven away from the madness of the Medina! Thankyou all at ZamZam for making our holiday such a success.

Zam Zam is perfectly located in the northern part of the medna in a quieter residential area. Initially the labarinth of alleys look unpromising only to walk through the riad thresold into what I can only descibe as an oasis of calm. The decor is boutique style & quite exquisite, you are very warmly welcomed by Marcus and Mo and ofered a very much appreciated refreshment we had mint tea which i recommend to restore you following your journey.
We felt very much at home straight away primarily due to the personal attention we received and the instant feeling that nothing was too much trouble. The whole riad and our room was very much to our taste with great attention to detail.
Very soon we were offered very useful advice and suggestions on things to do and see as well as handy travel hints whilst in Marrekech. We would recommend the use of a guide just to orientate you as the Medina can be very confusing and it's very easy to get lost, we got lost a couple of times but never came to any harm but did see a little more of the town than we thought we would (but don't worry - if you get too lost you only need to call the riad and they will help you out). Food in the riad was very good and they really want to please you, we would recommend eating at the riad least once as the food was excellent and plentiful, the Moroccan wine was very good also.
I've noted some negative reviews about this riad and honestly get quite frustrated and wonder about some people. Don't concern yourself with unjustified comments about hot water, location and the medina and please be totally reassured. Firstly the location is ideal, the riad is 'open' on 3 sides and offers breath taking views of the snow covered atlas mountains, they feel so close you feel as though you could just reach out and touch them as for the cementry well it's certainly very quiet, tranquil almost and offers a feeling of open space which is very welcome whilst in the medina. The medina is very busy with Moroccans, tourists, motor bikes, donkey carts, bicyles, cata & dogs milling around in every direction but that is part of the experience, very different sights, sounds and smells. Marcus seemed to have made every effort to provide our creature comforts including hot water, which is solar powered, nd we always had piping hot showers.
I would say to anyone though if you have a problem or concern when staying anywhere just say so and 9/10 it gets sorted out ( not everyone is a mind reader).
Finally I would whole heartly recommend Zam Zam as a place to stay and suggest the following; arrange airport pick up via Mo, it saved time and wasn't expensive, eat at the riad at least once, enjoy the fragrant body lotions & shower gels provided (bliss!) take a good book to read on the terrace, try the moroccan wines, try Tobsil restaurant for a moroccan banquet and if you like gardens go to Majorelle gardens.

When people ask us what was the highlight of our trip to Marrakech it's difficult to isolate one single experience - the city is so diverse, fascinating and enjoyable. There was, however, one factor which simply made the whole adventure an utter delight, and that was Zamzam Riad.
We knew little of the hotel before we arrived since our sons had booked it for us; but it is no exaggeration to say that within fifteen minutes of our arrival we felt as though we were staying with old friends.
Much has already been written of the charm, elegance, comfort and luxury of the accommodation - all true. We would simply add that Emma's attention to detail is exquisite: bathrobes, sun hats, (hot water bottles!) fresh fruit and Moroccan pasteries in every room; the combinations of fabrics, linen, furnishings and lighting unfailingly ravishing. Most important of all, though, was the way we were loooked after. Emma, Mo, the Guardian and staff could not possible have been more friendly, kind, considerate, solicitous and helpful throughout and that is what made our holiday simply a joy.

We had a fantastic few days in Zam Zam. Zam Zam is situated in the middle of the medina. A guide met us at the gate to the medina and escorted us to Zam Zam with our suitcases in a wheelbarrow - no taxis! After 2 days we managed to find the way on our own through narrow alleyways teaming with people, bikes and motorbikes.
Zam Zam was beautifully furnished, the rooms luxurious, and breakfasts on the roof terrace in the sun with the view of the Atlas Mountains in the distance were one of many highlights. The staff were friendly and helpful and the meals we had there were beautifully cooked. The place had a very special atmosphere and one could not help but to feel at home and at ease. We would most certainly stay there again if we were ever to revisit Marrekesh.

My partner and I went to Marrakech and stayed at the Riad Zam Zam for five nights as a treat for Valentines Day. We had the most amazing, wonderful time! Marrakech and particularly the Medina did not disappoint with its unique atmosphere which at times is really magical.

The experience of staying in a Riad in the middle of the Medina is one that will stay with us for a very long time. You are experiencing a taste of true Marrakech life, staying in close contact with families as they go about their daily life. Hearing the call to prayer, the sights and smells all add to the richness of the experience. As does getting lost! This is an almost inevitable part of visiting this wonderful place, and i must stress we never felt threatened or scared in any way, usually we would find a local landmark that gave us that sense of direction again - and anyway it all added to the fun!

The Riad itself is wonderful and has a real sense of atmosphere and warmth. The personal service is incredible and i cannot praise Mo, Marcus, Emma and the staff enough. Bedrooms and bathrooms have been designed to feel luxurious with wonderful beds that meant I had the best nights sleep in a very long time!

We ate at the Riad a couple of times and this again was a lovely experience, the dining room is very intimate and the food excellent. However i would also recommend sampling some food bought on the street - we had the thought that if locals eat the food then so could we...we had no problems. In fact speaking with locals about life in general added depth to our experience and I found everyone so helpful, friendly and willing to chat.

To summerise if you want to experience a really different culture only three hours away from the UK, then i cannot recommend Marrakech highly enough and after doing some research if staying in the Medina is for you, then you'll love Riad Zam Zam!
