“a three star hotel with a 5 star pretention”
Reviewed 28 January 2011

First let me say i dont write reviews on the basis of 'I had a bad time so its a bad hotel' or the opposite. I try to write balanced review that tell it as it is. Im much traveled, over 60 countries and ive seen it all, good and bad.

This is not a bad hotel, but is dose have serious problems, Its listed as 5 star, its long way from that at the moment. Under its new management and looking at the improvments being made it might make it there in the end but new carpets and painting the rooms wont cut it.

On the plus side the rooms were clean, newly painted in fact, quite large and quiet. The hotel has 5 eateries and although out of season three were open as well as the very comfortable bar. haveing read some of the reviews I did not intend to eat in the hotel at night but circumstances and the quality of the food led me to do just that. The plush morrocan restaurant was very good, the service was great the decor just right and the food better thsn most we tried in the town. the buffet in the asiactic restaurant was particually good and the food very well cooked, fresh fish tender chicken done in the local way and a huge selection of deserts all for about £15 per head, cheap for in house eating. the pool area is very nice,a massive poot with its own bar and the whole area very clean, all washed by an amry of staff every morning. The lounge areas (there are two huge lounges) are five star,no question about that.

The biggest problem with the hotel is that it lacks middle and low management, there are literally dozens of staff but most with no direction or purpose and leads to quite large problems. For example the pool bar often has eight staff sitting in it and none attempting to searve people round the pool, same in the main eating areas other then the morrocan ,3 or 4 staff huddled together in a corner and no one offering coffee at brekfast. Never saw a duty manager at reception the whole time, lots of staff all hanging around talking but not dealing with problems such as workmen meanding doors in occupied room areas with hammers at midnight, or 4 carpet fitters sleeping in front of the lifts after they had finished work at 8 pm. Soon as these were reported to recption the problems were promptly fixed but they should never had been alowed to occor..

The brekfast is a prim example of almost but not quite right. A good selection of items including a chef run egg station and fresh bread cooked on site but no one serving coffee unless you get up and call them, staff being trained to cook ommlets not told you need to wisk the eggs so you get a tasty kind of broken fried egg dish with your choise of chees ,ham etc. Also the doors left open to the pool, looks great but every day 20 to 30 small birds get in and steal the food when people get up to get coffee etc, no wonder there were no americans here, not there hotel standard at all.. so bottm line ,a very good hotel being dragged down to quite low level by poor management, lots of helpful staff and men in suits wandering around on the mobil phones but no one directing opperations, a shame the potental is there, perhaps the new management will wise up to it in time,or perhaps they knowand dont care.

Hotel receptions are very elaborate. Our bedroom was overlooking the front of the hotel onto the road which was quite noisy especially on the weekend as there is a nightclub. Food in the hotel was very disappointing and very bland but we found some nice places to eat. Try Le Comptoir, a fairly short walk away near the casino. Also Chez Chegrouni in the Jamaa El Fna square. Beware of being charged the extra taxes on arrival. We asked on checking in and were told that there were none but from reading reviews some people have been stung. Also the taxi drivers rip you off from the airport. They tried to charge us per person and not per taxi.. Make the best of your stay here. It was ok but not worthy of its 5 star rating.

Arrived late in the evening for a short break, reception staff were unable to find my booking and after keeping me waiting for an hour attempted to charge me for the room which I had paid for on line.I refused and they found my booking.

Room floors were dirty, electrical fittings loose and dangerous,.The Balcony was filthy with droppings of some description.I reported this to reception but no point, nothing done.
The food was disgusting. The Hotel is all front, nothing genuine about it.I was ill for a week on my return due to the food..

We arrived 2 hours ago and are still sitting in the lobby waiting to be attended to. We booked 7 nights through laterooms.com and upon confirmation of room we have been told that we need to pay additional local taxes and which somehow has brought the price up €200 for the week. Local taxes mind you is nowhere near this amount. After talking to laterooms they have noted that nowhere in Royal Mirages advertisement have they specified that taxes are to be applied on top of the amount we expected to pay and have been nothing but helpful trying to sort this out.

This is our first trip to Morocco and have just arrived in on the overnight train and have been told by reception that we can cancel our booking. It's not exactly the reception we were after nor wanting to try and run around an unfamiliar town looking for another hotel.

We are still waiting for an answer! Don't stay or if you do make sure they don't overcharge you!!!!!

We chose this hotel for its location and price. We paid £135 per night for 4 of us, i.e. only £33.75 per person per night. We stayed in two large, adjoining double rooms. After reading a number of critical reviews, we checked with our local travel agent, who thought the hotel was fine. We arrived and were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the hotel. Beautiful Moor style reception, duplicated across the other side of the large pool.

Can't understand much of the criticism. The carpets may have been replaced recently, because those we saw looked as good as new. The buffet breakfast was really good, with an extensive choice of food including omelettes and crepes cooked to order.

Some of the decor looked a bit dated, and some of the staff may have had trouble speaking English, so overall I'd say it probably isn't up to 5 star standard. However, for the price it is great value for money and would recommend it to anyone.
