“Relaxing & fun (long review)”
Reviewed 12 July 2011

The hotel is a short taxi ride away from Marrakesh centre. The hotel stands in generous, well laid out grounds. To the left of the hotel you have a short walk to the local village, which has its own small souk and local shops including a chemist. Turn right and there is a Tabac shop which sells reasonably (we are told) priced cigarettes.
It is too far away to walk from the hotel to Marrakesh centre.

Hotel Ammenities:

The hotel has wi-fi provided in the reception area (which also covers Zanibar) and by the pool side. We were also able to (sometimes) get wi-fi in our room.

The hotel has 2 main eating areas: the orangerie just off reception and the pool bar. They have slightly different opening times. The pool bar is generally favoured for lunch times as it is close to the pool and the food seems to be replenished quicker.

The hotel has a shop. It is HIDEOUSLY expensive. Tho it does sell a fair range of items.

Hotel Spa - offers range of massage, manicure, pedicure and hair cuts.
I went for a full body massage, manicure, pedicure and facial. This cost me over £100.
I wish I had had it in my local beauty salon. Although I was in the salon for about 3 hrs it some how still felt rushed. The beauticians did not speak much English. I can speak pigeon french. Most of the communication was done by pointing and gestures. Although they stayed open til 8pm, they did my manicure and pedicure together (2 assistants). They spoke to me very little - what was my name, where was I from & was I married. They then went on to have a conversation between each other. This conversation included a mock strangulation by the lady doing my manicure on the lady doing my pedicure. There was also little choice in nail polish colours - about 12 to chose from: 2 reds, a few pinks and some beigey/nudes. The polish smudged before I even left the salon & chipped before the end of the day. Disappointed does not even sum up my experience.

Hotel Activites:

During the day there is the animation team. A friendly bunch who encourage you to take part in activities including tournaments of darts, ping-pong, water volleyball and water areobics.
There are also tennis courts, a mini golf (not very good), football court and children's play area.
During the evening there is less activities. There was 1 bar open when we went (Zanibar). It is relatively spacious, reasonably cool (climate) and has a fair range of drinks. There is also a chap who sings & plays the keyboard. This is quite cheesey. The music in here can be too loud at times.
They do themed nights from time to time.

Hotel Pool:
There are 2 swimming pools. The indoor one is in with the spa. The outdoor one is reasonable size. There is a decent sized shallow end which has a semi barrier before the rest of the pool starts. There are steel ladders to facilitate entry and exit of the pool. there are depth markers on the pool ledge. The pool is not heated but in the sunshine this is welcome relief.

Hotel Pool Loungers:
you can have the loungers at pool side or in gardens. They are are standard holiday issue regarding comfort. The usual towel bagging of loungers occurs thruout the day starting very early in the morning. Having said this, on some days we were able to get loungers near the pool with ease in the late morning and afternoon.
Towels: your card will get you 1 pool towel. They are resistant to changing these before the end of your stay.

Our room was on 2nd floor. It was roomy. The A/C could have been more effective as it did not seem to give any real breeze - tho friends in other rooms said theirs worked well.
The room contained a small fridge. The fridge is not filled.
Our bathroom had a bath, overhead shower, sink and bidet. There is a seperate toilet. The bath plug can be very difficult to remove. People resorted to using dining knives to facilitate this.
The water is lovely and warm. The shower head can be a little difficult to aim. There is plenty of space to put your toileteries. The hotel provides 2 small soaps and some sachets of shower gel.
We had 2 hand towels and 2 bath towels. If you like bath sheets you will have to take your own. Despite hanging our towels back on the rail (the sign that we are happy to keep them), our towels were replaced daily.
There is a hair dryer in the bathroom and a 2 pin shaver point. There is a mirror in the bathroom and the bedroom.
The toilet roll is not Andrex/charmin but not that god awful stuff that is like sand/tracing paper either. They made sure there was 2 rolls in our loo each day, tho more is easily available should it be required.
There is reasonable wardrobe space. Tho a few more hangers would have been nice.
There is a safe within the room with easy to follow instructions.
Our double bed was 2 singles pushed together. This made the bed HUGE, but also meant that there was a bit of a ridge in the middle. The pillows were ok. 1 oxford pillow and a squarer pillow each. The sheets were nice clean cotton and there were even extra blankets, should you feel a bit cold.
The maid came in each day at varying times, sometimes morning and sometimes afternoon. She would make the bed & change sheets and towels. She would also tidy up - including folding some clothes my hubby had left on side. The floors were washed every day too, including the balcony.
Although the fridge was empty, 2 bottles of water were placed in the room each day.
A kettle would be handy, even a travel size one.
The hotel offer a laundry service. We washed some clothes out by hand and left to dry on the balcony. The sun got them dry pretty quickly.

The food was pretty good. It wasn't as spicy as we expected it to be. There is quite a lot of variety. There IS some repetition, however let's put this into context ...
Breakfast: Every day available:
6 types cereal
5 types bread
2 types yoghurt
cold meats
fresh fruit - oranges, melon, pineapple, fruit cocktail
4 or 5 different types of pastries
boiled eggs, fried eggs, omlettes
pancakes, english muffin
Tea, coffee, milk, 4 types fruit juice, mint tea, water

Salad - lettuce, tomato, onion, cucumber
mixed salads - pastas, eggs, chopped up stuff in sauces
hot pasta & various sauces inc cheese/white & mince
potatoes including roast & chips
meats including in various sauces or plain - chicken, turkey, lamb & beef.
pizzas - 3 or 4 flavours each night
cous cous
veggies - green beans, carrots, sweet potato, etc
4 or 5 types of bread
same drinks PLUS soft drinks & wine
Desserts - mousses, cakes, pasteries, 3 different flavours ice cream, biscuits.

Flies and birds did come in the food areas and this is something that Riu should deal with better.

In the pool side food area there is also a manned bar which serves spirits. There is also a drinks machine that does hot choc, latte, hot milk etc. There is not a similar drinks machine in the orangerie which is a shame.

The hotel also has a reservation restaurant which is traditional morrocan food. We did not use this but were told by others that it was nice.

Getting ill:

We both got ill (me slightly worse than him) with d&v's. Go to the local chemist, explain what you have & they will give you stuff. What they give you works. The stuff we got worked out to about £10 but there was enough to treat an entire family. And it worked!

We loved the holiday. Totally. Yeah we could have done without getting ill, but hey things happen and you get on with it. Marrakech is filled with good and not so good. Go with an open mind and an attitude of laid back fun & you will do well.
Try new things.
Don't be afraid to say no.
Have fun.
Def do the Cascades. Unless you are really unfit.

oh and finally

our rep: Sandra.

She's fab. Not a lot phazes her. She has a cracking sense of humour and a wealth of info.

So YES some repetition of food but also a lot of choice and variety possible.

When we arrived it was about 1 in the morning, the hotel said they would have food ready for us and a welcoming drink, well the drink was supposed to be a cocktail but it must have been sat there a few hours and was hot, and the food was leftovers from earlier on in the night! me and my friend only went for a long weekend Thursday to Monday, as two girls we decided not to leave the hotel, when it came to breakfast the first morning we tried a few things, the sausages are not sausages, we didn't eat breakfast again put it that way! They served the same food for dinner that they did for tea the whole time we were there, and there must of only been about 10 things to choose from! Every weekend italians come over and its easy to say that they get priority, there is only 3 restaurant including the buffet one, one night we went into the poolside one to see what the food was like when we walked in a member of staff approached us and asked what nationality we were, when we said english they told we were not alowed in there and thaty it was for italians only! we tryed to book into the morocan restaurant every night but always seemed to be fully booked. There were some bar staff that refused to serve us because we were English an when the maid stopped putting bottled water in our room we went to the bar and asked for a bottle of water to put in the room the refused to give it to us even though we were all inclusive, one night when a bar man did get us a bottle of coke he wanted something in return!!!!!!!! which he DID NOT GET! The only place that has air conditioning is the room! the pool was kept clean all the time, daytime activities the same everyday, night time entertainment was a singer that cant sing and when he forgets the words he mumbles or makes up his own! I could go on forever! considering this is a RIU hotel i was very very disappointed!

by reading these reviews i was unsure what to expect from this hotel as they are so varied, but having just returned from a week there with 2 friends i cant really see where all the complaints have come from? I certainly did not notice any 'italian problem' at the weekend and i found it exceptionally clean and the staff all very friendly. The food was very varied so you didnt have to have to same thing for every meal if you didnt want to, VISIT THE MOROCCAN RESTAURANT ONSITE! The traditional Tagine served in the beautiful little building made it a perfect evening getting away from the usual buffet. Day time entertainment was great, very friendly staff always offering different activities but not pressurizing them, though i can agree that the evening entertainment (bar the Wednesday night which had Moroccan street performers like belly dancers) was the same man on a piano, but still good to listen to. From the pictures it is clear to say it is a beautiful hotel and excellent location (free shuttle bus takes you to New town 20 min walk from old town square or 15dirum taxi!) I would definitely return!

I liked the room and where we slept. Bit dissapointed about the size could of extended the room a bit more.It would of been nice to have a talbe and a sofa to chill on. the shower in the bathroom is quite dangerous because it is very slippy. The sevice is very good and the waiters are really nice to us.

As ever, reviews are subjective! We wanted a nice, chilled, relaxing holiday and that's exactly what we got. The room was beautiful, as were the main body of the hotel and the grounds. The pool area was big enough (although we had a few towel fairies popping out to the sun loungers before sunrise - wasted effort though as there were always plenty of loungers and parasols) and well kept.
The food was more than adequate with plenty of variety (yes, there were birds scavenging whenever the opportunity arose but, seeing as we sat outside rather than inside, that was only to be expected). The drinks were more than adequate also - even the wine!
As mentioned in other reviews there was a large weekend invasion of Italians, but this had no impact on us at all - they didn't seem to be in the hotel much apart from on the night of arrival and for pre-dinner drinks before being bused out.
The staff were all great - friendly and helpful at all times. Entertainment in Zanzibar wasn't to our taste but we did tolerate sometimes for an hour or two sometimes after leaving the restaurant!
All in all, we got what we wanted for a reasonable price.

We stayed for 11nights all inclusive with First Choice. Clean hotel with beautiful gardens, good quality of food, with lovley bread, pastries, puddings. Good Soups
aswell. Friendly staff. Clean pool towels and room towels every day. Good airconditioning, not noisy, one of the best nights sleep in hotel and have travelled all
over the world. Bed and pillows good.

They are doing improvements, L'Orangeraie buffet opened again at the beginning of our holiday, breakfast and evening meals. Lunch served at the Buffet restauarant by the pool. No noise of building works while we were relaxing by pool, eating or sleeping.
Things being repainted, replacing broken floor tiles etc. Going to be a first class hotel !
when they are finished with it. We went every other night to the Moroccan Restaurant, because it was very very good, Aicha (lady) runs this with occasional song with musician playing all the time nearly. A chant when opening a bottle of champagne on my birthday, made it special.

Animation team work very hard and deserve praise! Only thing is the lack of entertainment in the evening.

Had a wonderful time in Marrakech and have no hesitation in recomending this hotel or
country to visit. Hope to go back soon.

Well done Tikida Garden Hotel!
