The hotel is a short taxi ride away from Marrakesh centre. The hotel stands in generous, well laid out grounds. To the left of the hotel you have a short walk to the local village, which has its own small souk and local shops including a chemist. Turn right and there is a Tabac shop which sells reasonably (we are told) priced cigarettes.
It is too far away to walk from the hotel to Marrakesh centre.
The hotel has wi-fi provided in the reception area (which also covers Zanibar) and by the pool side. We were also able to (sometimes) get wi-fi in our room.
The hotel has 2 main eating areas: the orangerie just off reception and the pool bar. They have slightly different opening times. The pool bar is generally favoured for lunch times as it is close to the pool and the food seems to be replenished quicker.
The hotel has a shop. It is HIDEOUSLY expensive. Tho it does sell a fair range of items.
Hotel Spa - offers range of massage, manicure, pedicure and hair cuts.
I went for a full body massage, manicure, pedicure and facial. This cost me over £100.
I wish I had had it in my local beauty salon. Although I was in the salon for about 3 hrs it some how still felt rushed. The beauticians did not speak much English. I can speak pigeon french. Most of the communication was done by pointing and gestures. Although they stayed open til 8pm, they did my manicure and pedicure together (2 assistants). They spoke to me very little - what was my name, where was I from & was I married. They then went on to have a conversation between each other. This conversation included a mock strangulation by the lady doing my manicure on the lady doing my pedicure. There was also little choice in nail polish colours - about 12 to chose from: 2 reds, a few pinks and some beigey/nudes. The polish smudged before I even left the salon & chipped before the end of the day. Disappointed does not even sum up my experience.
During the day there is the animation team. A friendly bunch who encourage you to take part in activities including tournaments of darts, ping-pong, water volleyball and water areobics.
There are also tennis courts, a mini golf (not very good), football court and children's play area.
During the evening there is less activities. There was 1 bar open when we went (Zanibar). It is relatively spacious, reasonably cool (climate) and has a fair range of drinks. There is also a chap who sings & plays the keyboard. This is quite cheesey. The music in here can be too loud at times.
They do themed nights from time to time.
There are 2 swimming pools. The indoor one is in with the spa. The outdoor one is reasonable size. There is a decent sized shallow end which has a semi barrier before the rest of the pool starts. There are steel ladders to facilitate entry and exit of the pool. there are depth markers on the pool ledge. The pool is not heated but in the sunshine this is welcome relief.
Hotel Pool Loungers:
you can have the loungers at pool side or in gardens. They are are standard holiday issue regarding comfort. The usual towel bagging of loungers occurs thruout the day starting very early in the morning. Having said this, on some days we were able to get loungers near the pool with ease in the late morning and afternoon.
Towels: your card will get you 1 pool towel. They are resistant to changing these before the end of your stay.
Our room was on 2nd floor. It was roomy. The A/C could have been more effective as it did not seem to give any real breeze - tho friends in other rooms said theirs worked well.
The room contained a small fridge. The fridge is not filled.
Our bathroom had a bath, overhead shower, sink and bidet. There is a seperate toilet. The bath plug can be very difficult to remove. People resorted to using dining knives to facilitate this.
The water is lovely and warm. The shower head can be a little difficult to aim. There is plenty of space to put your toileteries. The hotel provides 2 small soaps and some sachets of shower gel.
We had 2 hand towels and 2 bath towels. If you like bath sheets you will have to take your own. Despite hanging our towels back on the rail (the sign that we are happy to keep them), our towels were replaced daily.
There is a hair dryer in the bathroom and a 2 pin shaver point. There is a mirror in the bathroom and the bedroom.
The toilet roll is not Andrex/charmin but not that god awful stuff that is like sand/tracing paper either. They made sure there was 2 rolls in our loo each day, tho more is easily available should it be required.
There is reasonable wardrobe space. Tho a few more hangers would have been nice.
There is a safe within the room with easy to follow instructions.
Our double bed was 2 singles pushed together. This made the bed HUGE, but also meant that there was a bit of a ridge in the middle. The pillows were ok. 1 oxford pillow and a squarer pillow each. The sheets were nice clean cotton and there were even extra blankets, should you feel a bit cold.
The maid came in each day at varying times, sometimes morning and sometimes afternoon. She would make the bed & change sheets and towels. She would also tidy up - including folding some clothes my hubby had left on side. The floors were washed every day too, including the balcony.
Although the fridge was empty, 2 bottles of water were placed in the room each day.
A kettle would be handy, even a travel size one.
The hotel offer a laundry service. We washed some clothes out by hand and left to dry on the balcony. The sun got them dry pretty quickly.
The food was pretty good. It wasn't as spicy as we expected it to be. There is quite a lot of variety. There IS some repetition, however let's put this into context ...
Breakfast: Every day available:
6 types cereal
5 types bread
2 types yoghurt
fresh fruit - oranges, melon, pineapple, fruit cocktail
4 or 5 different types of pastries
boiled eggs, fried eggs, omlettes
pancakes, english muffin
Tea, coffee, milk, 4 types fruit juice, mint tea, water
Salad - lettuce, tomato, onion, cucumber
mixed salads - pastas, eggs, chopped up stuff in sauces
hot pasta & various sauces inc cheese/white & mince
potatoes including roast & chips
meats including in various sauces or plain - chicken, turkey, lamb & beef.
pizzas - 3 or 4 flavours each night
veggies - green beans, carrots, sweet potato, etc
4 or 5 types of bread
same drinks PLUS soft drinks & wine
Desserts - mousses, cakes, pasteries, 3 different flavours ice cream, biscuits.
Flies and birds did come in the food areas and this is something that Riu should deal with better.
In the pool side food area there is also a manned bar which serves spirits. There is also a drinks machine that does hot choc, latte, hot milk etc. There is not a similar drinks machine in the orangerie which is a shame.
The hotel also has a reservation restaurant which is traditional morrocan food. We did not use this but were told by others that it was nice.
We both got ill (me slightly worse than him) with d&v's. Go to the local chemist, explain what you have & they will give you stuff. What they give you works. The stuff we got worked out to about £10 but there was enough to treat an entire family. And it worked!
We loved the holiday. Totally. Yeah we could have done without getting ill, but hey things happen and you get on with it. Marrakech is filled with good and not so good. Go with an open mind and an attitude of laid back fun & you will do well.
Try new things.
Don't be afraid to say no.
Def do the Cascades. Unless you are really unfit.
oh and finally
our rep: Sandra.
She's fab. Not a lot phazes her. She has a cracking sense of humour and a wealth of info.
So YES some repetition of food but also a lot of choice and variety possible.
