“Fit for purpose”
Reviewed 19 March 2008

Given the polemic reports on this hotel, it was difficult to 'get the truth and then go'! We had booked at a travel agent and were unable to read TripAdvisor before booking. I am glad we didn't as we might not have booked it. As it was we found the hotel 'fit for purpose'. Sure some of the criticisms are justified (lack of pool heating, air conditioning) but we were there at an ideal time and didn’t need either. The staff were very friendly and smiley, the gardens are lovely, the food was alright and, yes, it needs a lick of paint (there aren’t many hotels of any category that don’t unless just refurbished). But it was excellent value – we booked a week, demi-pension, including air flights from Toulouse for €520 each. Those who couldn’t take the hussle and bussle of the Souks and Medina that make Marrakesh, really shouldn’t travel at all! I would rate it a shade under 4 stars.

We booked our holiday through Thomsons and chose this hotel as it looked nice and was suitably out of busy city centre Marakech. Now I know that there are mixed reviews of this hotel on this site but I have to say that we could not fault it. I do a lot of global travelling with work and therefore have fairly high expectations in terms of standards. All of the staff were extremely friendly and helpful with nothing being too much trouble. The quality of Accommodation was very good - probably more comparable to a good UK 3 star but very clean and comfortable. The hotel is very spacious with plenty of seating areas both outside and inside the hotel - never seen so many comfy sofas.

The holiday we booked came as half-board though this wasn't a priority for us, just part of the package. We actually ended up eating dinner in the hotel most days as the food was excellent. The half board enabled us to take either lunch or Dinner each day. There is a wide ranging buffet available - about 20 different types of salad, meat, fish etc each day - which has a different country/region theme on various days. There were also at least two hot dishes to choose from, desserts galore and enough fruit (oranges in particular) to satisfy fruit lovers. Food was always freshly prepared. Good tip - bag yourself a waiter on the first night and give a good tip (about 15 dirhams - £1 or 1.5 euros). We then found that each night we came down for dinner, a table had been saved for us, was nicely laid out and we got attentive, though not overbearing, service. Tip as you go along.

The only very minor potential down side might be the number of children around. Our kids are grown up so we were looking for a quiet location. Avoid French School holidays as many French families had booked. Having said that, if you have kids and want a family friendly environment this won't be a problem - the Morrocans generally love kids and give lots of attention.

The hotel is about a 45 minute walk from the centre but we walked in regularly (good exercise after all that food) and it is a pleasant, straightforward, stroll. You can always get a taxi there or back (make sure the meter is on or agree a fare first) or come back in a Kalesch (horse drawn carriage - again barter for a good price before getting on - we paid about 50 Dirhams (£3.50 or 5 euros total).

Avoid any trips to 'Fantasia night'. It's very touristy, nothing spectacular and the food wasn't that good. Day out in 4-wheel drive to Atlas mountains recommended + the Marrakech Discovery walking day.
