Very noisy in rooms on ground floor. We were woke early by people checking out early. Beautiful tiles throughout but this just adds to the echo of noisy neighbours! Room simple and small. Terrace pretty but a little crowded with rooftop guests. We stayed just one night before heading across the street to a quieter and cheaper riad.

We stayed in this hotel for about a week at the beginning of July. It was nicely decorated, traditional Moroccan style, and had a lot of character. We paid 30 dirham a night, which was about £2.35 to sleep on the roof, wouldn't of wanted a room - far too hot. The roof was great, big with cushions, lot of tables and chair and a small kitchen which served food all day and the most amazing orange juice. Met so many great people there, it was a good atmosphere, and right in the middle of the action. Bathrooms were fine, and a good washing facility for clothes. However there were bad parts of this stay. We met a few people on the roof that were staying in one of the rooms, and they were covered in bites - bed bugs in the rooms. Another down side was that there was no cover whatsoever on the roof, and it got ridiculously hot during the day, one of my friends got a nose bleed because of the heat. Also the roof did get a little overcrowded on a couple of nights, due to about 20 french (and very annoying) scouts taking over. Would recommend this place for like minded travellers who want to meet people, but not people who want an early night!

Hotel Essaouira is a great place to stay. The hotel is beautiful and excellent value for money. The rooms are simple but the courtyard and roof terrace with view and live sound from the Jemaa el Fna makes it perfect.

We where there in 2007 and you can only make a reservation by phone (we could only book two days in advance they would not take the booking earlier).

We arrived late in the evening and Marrakech can be quite a daunting place when you arrive for the first time but once you get used to the place it is fine and feels save.

A lot of the hotels in Marrakech will receive a commission when you book a excursion. We took the advice of our Trotters and booked an excursion at some hostel and Hotel Essaouira lost its commission. I could feel they where not exactly pleased with us.

So my conclusion it is a perfect place to stay when you want a simple, beautiful, reasonably priced and clean hotel

Tried to book big sister property Jnane Mogador at last minute. When arrived there, was told it was full but there was a room just down the alley at the Essaouria....

Indeed, while the Essaouria, though quite beautiful inside with the standard fountain in courtyard, and impressively painted ceilings etc, generally features quite basic small rooms (shared bath), it does have one large room with bath for a reasonable price.

There's no A/C but indeed that wasn't a real problem. There was a somewhat broken down fan but it was sufficient as things really cooled down at night.

Staff generally friendly and helpful but had tension one day (stayed almost a week) when one desk clerk insisted we hadn't yet paid for the night though we had.

Location is very convenient and not much trick to find if you check the sister hotel's web site. Room generally clean and spacious if bit basic (don't come looking for TV, phone, etc.) and definitely has some charm --- but there were hidden issues we discovered toward the end, spotting a mouse in the bathroom the last night (he'd left traces of rubble on the floor earlier from his entry) and the day after we left Marrakech and Morocco, learned that the bites/rash that had started quite small one morning waking in the room and expanded in number and size a bit each morning was actually scabies.

  • Liked — Attractive interior of building (common areas)
  • Disliked — Invisible bugs in the bed, mouse

Lovely Moroccan architecture, helpful staff , laid-back ambiance - great place to meet engaged, cosmopolitan travellers - rooftop patio with view - shared showers no problem, clean and available - such a decent deal, I can't say enough! I'll be back!

  • Liked — the authenticity of being in Marrakech, of being in Morocco (at a killer price!)
  • Disliked — sorry - i was intrigued by it all!

We spent nearly a week in this hotel during December 07'.

This place has got to be one of the best value-for-money hotels in Marrakech. We paid 100 Dirhams for 2 people each night, which roughly equates to £6.40 or $12.5. There are other hotels nearby with similar prices, but this one was in recommended in our guidebook. You probably won't get cheaper than this in the centre of the "Medina" of Marrakech.

For those of you who are really on a budget, I you can even sleep on the rooftop terrace (sheltered though +blankets provided) for around 30 Dirhams, though we did not try this out.

It is worth booking ahead (all they require is a name/time of arrival) by telephone, as some they weren't always places for people who hadn't booked. The owner was very friendly and spoke French and English.

The rooms were very nice, simple and very clean (see pictures); and most (if not all) have a tap/sink too. Our room had no power socket - however I found on in the toilets. Blankets were heavy but warm. There is no double-glazing hence it can be a little noisy, but if this never lasted very long (into the night). That said, it could be worth to take some earplugs... especially since the Imam calls out for the morning prayers at 5AM.

There is a toilet/shower at each floor, and there IS hot water (free) - just need to wait/turn the tap on properly. The toilets aren't luxury, but they were clean, and we always saw the cleaning ladies doing a good job everywhere they went.

The hotel is located in a small side road, that has a few twists and turns, but is really quite safe. It is also around 2 minutes away from the main square Djemaa al Fna.

It is recommended you tip the staff as you leave, and they are paid very little.

Overall and excellent experience - loads of other tourists wondered how we got such a good deal. Don't expect anything luxury, but the hotel had nothing that would make you want to run away.

Pros:
- Great Price
- Very clean
- Friendly
- Centrally located, near the main square
- Can keep your bags aside for 15 Dirhams

Cons:
- No power supply in the rooms we had (used one in bathroom)
- A bit noisy, but really nothing to complain about

  • Liked — Price and location
  • Disliked — Bit noisy (but nothing bad) and no power supply in our room
