“Do not go there: expensive, disappointing, and wallet lost!”
Reviewed 11 January 2013

We had to spend the night of 29th December in Marrakech coming from Rabat and going to the Desert in the early morning the day after. Several hotels were sold out and we were tired, so we accepted to stay in the last room remained in Hotel Oudaya despite the price; we said that at least it was a 4 stars and maybe it was worth it: HUGE MISTAKE!
The room was actually nice and tidy, even if very small. When we went to bed we turned the heater on (in winter Morocco's night are very cold) but it didn't work (I previously asked if the heater was ok and the answer was yes). I called the reception and they said that someone was coming in 5 minutes: Nobody came and we slept without heat.
In the morning I woke up willing to have a hot shower; so I want in the bathroom and... SURPRISE: the water wasn't hot at all.
We had an average breakfast than we packed our staff and, after a look if anything was left in the room, we left the hotel going to the station.
In the afternoon, arrived in another hotel in Ouarzazate, my girlfriend looked for her wallet but didn't find it: she always keeps it in her luggage cause all the dirhams were always in my pocket but she remembered that she only took it out in Hotel Oudaya in order to pay with Visa but the receptionist said they didn't accept payments with cards (!) than she left it on the night-table in the room. So she reflected that early in the morning, her wallet wasn't anymore on the night-table as it was the evening before. Still hoping that her wallet wasn't stolen but just left in Hotel Oudaya, we called the Hotel. Hotel Oudaya's receptionist, quite disturbed by our call, said to call back in 5 minutes. In an hour we called three times and each time the answer was to call back in 5 minutes cause the had to ask to the housekeeping mistress. Finally, at the last call he said that nothing had been found in our room.
After the Hotel Oudaya's nightmare we enjoyed the rest of our staying in Morocco but we regretted so much when we read on Tripadvisor that we weren't the first loosing something in that Hotel.
Now that we are back from Morocco we have just two suggestions for who visits Marrakech: read some opinions of the hotels you are thinking to go on Tripadvisor and AVOID Hotel Oudaya!

Room Tip: If you really have to stay in this hotel, do not leave anything important in the room.

I spent 3 nights altogether in Hotel Oudaya, the first 2 on my way to the Atlas mountains. These two nights were fine, we stayed in the quieter part of the hotel, windows overlooking a courtyard.

The last night however before we returned to London was very different. The hotel was full and we were given noisy rooms in a less well constructed part of the hotel where you could hear room doors banging all night as occupants came and went. The room also had double terrace doors and traffic noise flew in all night.

Our room wasn't cleaned and we only discovered this when we came up after checking in, when I complained the sheets were changed but the bathroom wasn't cleaned. When I complained again (I found hairs in the bath and in the sink), the chambermaid started shouting at me. She started throwing things around in the bathroom and only cleaned the bath, not the sink and not the lavatory.

She had originally left a used towel in there for us, someone else brought brand new ones when I said this wasn't acceptable. These were removed BEFORE we checked out the following day, I hate to think they were simply put in other rooms used.

I changed about EUR 60 into Dirhams and I wasn't given a receipt. I tried several times but could not obtain one. In the end I had to leave to check out and luckily the airport receipt was enough for me to change the remaining currencies back. Still pretty poor practice I thought.

The hotel simply can't cope with full occupancy, clearly they don't have enough chambermaids to do the work and enough clean towels. The noisy levels on our last night were horrendous, most of us (a group of 16) struggled to sleep. Never again.

Location is about 20 minutes drive from the airport but quite far from the old part of Marrakech. That could be good or bad, depending what you want.

Room Tip: Insist on staying at the old part of the hotel where the rooms have only double digit numbers (not t...

The good: clean, comfortable rooms
The bad: laundry service unreliable, wifi unstable, shower was cold, elevator never worked when we were here, so the climb to room 69 was tiring (4 flights with heavy luggage)

Staff were uninterested in any concerns unless you persist in getting satisfaction.

Our room was roomy, nice and clean and had a decent sized balcony with a small table and two chairs. It also had good lighting, a flat screen TV, large closet, clean bathroom, a safe in the closet, and lots of hot water. Breakfast consisted of several types of pastries, bread, rolls, juice, coffee, hard-boiled eggs and sliced tomatoes. Being in new town, there were many Western-friendly restaurants in the close proximity. It's about a 40 minute walk to La Place, but only about a 20 minute walk to Jardin Marjorelle.

One problem was that the WIFI did not work, although hotel staff said it did. In fact, the front desk staff were generally unfriendly and unhelpful.

We were booked into Hotel Oudaya as part of a tour group and pleasantly surprised by the beautiful pool -much needed in 50 degree temps. The hotel is close to supermarket (be warned hotel policy is that you cannot bring food into the hotel which has been purchased outside), about 20 mins from markets, close to cafes, restaurants and ATM just around the corner.
On our first night the air-conditioner leaked water all over the floor wetting the mats. We asked for another room, moved into one and within 5 mins the conceierge knocked on the door asking if we could move because the room we'd been given had been double booked, and the TV didn't work. Were moved to another room on another floor (musical rooms). After we'd been out for a while we came back to find painters got into our rooms and were painting the window eaves. All without our knowledge or permission. Overall, all 3 rooms (in 2 days) seemed to be comfortable, bathrooms ok and serviced each day.

Oudaya is in itself a nice hotel. Rooms and bathrooms are allright, what you can expect from a three star hotel in Morocco. It has a real nice swimming pool, which is great to have to cool down from the heat of Marrakech.
What makes the hotel so poor is the uninterested staff, coming back in details like the simple breakfast or no staff in the bar or near the pool. The lay-out of the hotel is quite complex (lots of stairs and sideways) and definitely not suited for people in a wheelchair.
Distance to town is about half an hour walking, which is nice in the warm evening but not recommended in the hot afternoons.

We stayed here during Ramadan as this was the finish hotel for our Gap Adventures tour and we stayed an extra 2 days.

The hotel location is good, as it is only a short cab ride to major attractions and the big clean pool was certainly a relief from the scorching heat. We had a nice clean room on the 3rd floor although we had to use the stairs as the lift was not working or had not been finished ... There was no button and doors were broken.

Most disappointing for us was the attitude of the staff in the restaurant. On our first day we wanted to order food by the pool after seeing a family order theirs 15 mins before we called a waiter over. He called another colleague over from the bar to attend to us and so we asked for a menu which we presumed he was off to get when he left. After waiting for some time we asked the same waiter from the restaurant about the menu and were then told we could no longer order as the service had finished. We asked where we could get food and were told there was a cafe outside BUT we could not bring the food into the hotel.

The poor attitude and laziness of the wait staff also extended to breakfast service. We were told on our last morning we could not sit inside the restaurant as it had been set up for dinner and so were directed to a table right next to a noisy air conditioner.

One good thing abut this hotel is that it's right around the corner from La Brasserie, a restaurant with a roof top bar...definitely recommended.
