“The heart of the new town”
Review of Gueliz

Gueliz
Reviewed 27 December 2011

The Marrakech Plaza is the centre of Gueliz with it's up-market shops and cafes and beautiful fountains. The Marche Central just behind the plaza is where all the ex-pats go for exotic (for Morocco) fruit and veg, amazingly cheap horse meat at the butchers, Oscar the pork specialist and easy access to wine, beer and spirits without having to go to the supermarket.

Gueliz is where you find the real designer shops, great international cafes and restaurants, parks and just a completely different feel to Marrakech. When (if) the medina overwhelms you head for Gueliz for the day and you will gain the strength to head back into the medina knowing this haven is there when you need it!

As a relative "new build" Gueliz - part of the French Protectorate's attempt at distancing themselves from the locals in the medina - this part of the city has places worth visiting. There are many good restaurants for example, three supermarkets and the more traditional Marche Central. The main street, Avenue Mohammed V, is pleasantly tree lined with oranges and palms/ Here can be found several travel agencies including the bureaux of Royal Air Maroc and Air France. Specialist photography shops and a large opticians (Wrede) are situated here too. There are clothes boutiques and a small mall also. Side streets are worth exploring for additional bazaars and speciality shops too. The main post office (La Poste) can be found here too and the new residential/shopping complex lies directly opposite this, complete with fountains and pavement cafes. There are a few alimentations (licensed grocers) too and a smaller plaza with other shopping outlets. For those interested in buying properties, or for renting, there are immobiliers (estate agents) which can help. Doctors' and dentists' cabinet (surgeries) are located here and one of the best private hospitals, Polyclinique du Sud, provides excellent care. There is one cinema, Le Colisee, which shows a variety of films, normally dubbed into French and/or Arabic.

This is probably the high street of Marrakech, had places like Zara, JD sports, La Senza, Mc Donald’s, KFC and Pizza huts, many shopping malls and restaurants, which was a big contrast from Djemaa El Fna. It was nice but not a wow factor. This is the only place I know that actually had a Mc Donald’s and KFC, I was frantically looking for it as it is halal over there and wanted to make the most of halal Mc Donald’s!!!

The Apprentice was filmed in this area when they went to Marrakesh, I even went in to the shop where they were making the tennis rackets!

Worth a look around my boyfriend done a bit of shopping there (his more like a girl when it comes to shopping). Very convenient place if you need it.
