“Get lost and bargain hard!”
Reviewed 13 July 2014

The Souks are so much fun. Beware of the saying "looking is for free" cos once you are in their shop you get strongly encourgaed to buy something. Be polite when you do not want to buy something. Tip: don't tell them it's your first time to Marrakech!

Just let it go and get lost in the alleys of souks. You can spend hours in there just walking around (we managed to do like 15km each day!!). It is a must be/see in Marrakech

“Fascinating”
Reviewed 12 July 2014

Souks are a must but be prepared to run the gauntlet of very enthusiastic sellers and definately haggle for the best prices. Take time to wander though the vast array and variety of stalls selling shoes, wooden items, pottery , clothes etc .. The variety of what you will see, smell , hear is up describable.. From medieval ironworks , literally fires on the street and workmen bashing out red/ white hot metal at their feet, to the smell of glues, paints, dyes in the leather souk , for the expertise of the wood turners . Absolutely incredible

“Great place to wander”
Reviewed 10 July 2014

But, like anywhere, the more you look and act like a tourist, the more you will be treated like a tourist.

We had a great couple of days just wandering the streets and enjoying the experience. Remember to treat the people you see with respect. If you want to photograph them, seek permission and pay the price. Don't complain.

The most amazing orange juice I have ever tasted!

“Be careful & be prepared to be ripped off!”
Reviewed 10 July 2014

The souks are a large catacomb of small stalls, shop and "boutiques". The souks offers a large range of Moroccan souvenirs. They are absolutely beautiful and great to visit once. Anymore than once or twice and it can get irritating. The souks range from things like leather bags, shisha's, scarves, tea sets, knives, jewelry, clothing and tangines. It's absolutely massive as well. Every stall you walk past will have someone trying to drag you into their shop. For some, no thank you is not enough just push past them and keep going. Some can be pretty grabby and in your face. Just keep telling them no thank you. Every single one will tell you that it's the best quality, "its not from china", and for you they will do the best price. Depending on how busy it is will depend on the price. They will look at how you are dressed and decide a price. They are there to rip you off. We went into one stall to get four scarves and they tried to charge us 1060 dirham. Another stall tried to charge us 900 dirham for one scarf. A local would pay about 15 (if that). They will tell you it's cashmere or real silk. ITS NOT TRUE. The majority is fake and cheaper versions. They will tell you their jewelery, teapots and other metal based products are real silver. It's not. It's pressed metal. If you are finding they are charging you over the odds and won't come down low enough for you just go to the cafflour store (about 30 minutes from the medina) it's got a lot better quality stuff at a much lower price. For example the teapots in the souks will be approx 300 - 600 dirham for a large one. In the store you will get it for over half that. However, the store is fixed priced and you may come across a stall that is willing to do it cheaper. It's also one that you can use rather than just being for display. If they tell you that you can use them - they cant. In the souks the majority of the teapots are for display only. There job is to rip you off and they will say anything to make a sale. However, remember, that you don't half to buy anything you don't want to buy. It's a great one of experience, however, it can be a little much. I would avoid foods and spices there too.
