Owner description: For budding chefs, or just those interested in food, but definitely on a budget - try out Backpackers' Cooking Class. Based in a traditional Marrakech riad - it is a fun, communal experience with great English, French, Spanish and Italian speaking staff. The real challenge is getting a tagine into your backpack to show off to your friends!

We had the most incredible experience doing the cooking class with Hajar. She was very patient and informative and we learnt a lot about Moroccan cooking. The tagine that we made based on her recipe was delicious, even more so than the ones we tried at other restaurants in Morocco. It was also an interesting experience to visit the local markets to purchase the fresh ingredients as it's not something we would normally have a chance to do on our own. Highly recommend this to anyone who loves cooking and good food! :)

This cookery class was definitely one of the highlights of our holiday. We meet some lovely people at this class and had great fun dodging cloud bursts and large puddles whilst shopping in the Jamaâ el Fna Square with Sana for all the ingredients to go into our chosen dishes.

We consisted of 3 couples and we made 2 root vegetable tagines, 1 beef and 1 lamb tagine, Moroccan flat bread, a beautiful Moroccan savoury salad and a fresh fruit salad. I can honestly say that it was the tastiest Moroccan food that we had eaten during the whole of our 5 days in Marrakech. The balance of the spices in all the dishes was spot on.

We really did have a wonderful day including the shopping, preparing the food, laughing, talking & eating and we would recommend the “Backpacker's cooking class” for anyone wishing to enjoy a true Moroccan experience in a friendly, relaxed environment with such lovely teachers.

Many thanks to Sana, Aida & Hajar for giving us such an enjoyable day which was great fun as well as being extremely informative. xxx “Keep Smiling” xxx

Also, our thanks to Lucy, Martin, Alex & Tom for their superb company and interesting conversation. It really was a pleasure to meet you all and we wish you the very best in all that you do in the future. Helen & Peter. xxx

We had a lovely day despite intermittent heavy rains that drove us inside and necessitated changing all the arrangements for where we prepared and ate the meals. I recommend this as a nice and laid back alternative to the higher priced classes. The tagine was excellent. As was the bread, salad, fruit, everything. I feel I should note that although we were told in writing and on the website several times that the price was "only" €20, we were asked several times at various markets to pay the appropriate fraction of the ingredient costs. That amounted to about €9 additional each, not insignificant. We would have felt better about this if we had known from the start of the booking process that the ingredients would be paid for separately and in addition to the €20. I still recommend the class, but hope they will clarify on their website about the true cost.
