“great Riad”
Reviewed 25 January 2014

a superb riad, with fascinating decor & the most friendly , helpful owner Brahim
the best mint tea in the Medina .
close to where you need to be, yet far enough away from Jemma El Fna, so you are not affected by the noise.
highly recommended

What can you say about Riad Dar Aby and where to start. The first place is naturally with the owner, Brahim, a character that classically reflects the stereotypes of what I expected of Marrakech. A smart entrepreneur, born and raised in France, of Moroccan background, he could make anyone feel at home. A Moroccan experience would not be complete without him. He can speak Arabic, French, English and Spanish and tries to make all his guests feel at home. He has truly done an excellent job of renovating the premises and the Riad is just as it is in the pictures on the site. Brahim is also a good source of information on what you should and should not do, but be a bit careful, as you are still in Morocco. The cultural differences ensure that if something does not go to plan, Brahim is the first to say..."It is not my fault...It is not my responsibility". With that said, he is an excellent host.

It is the perfect place to stay if want the location of being in the centre of the old city as everything is within walking distance. Brahim also let us have use of the kitchen, which he assured us is not the case in any other Riad. This was particularly good as it saved us money and allowed us to cook our own meals a couple of times. This also encouraged us to get out to some of the great local markets close by and get some fresh faire, like olives, vegetables, nuts and dates and put together our own Moroccan feast. Breakfast is included and is fair to good, with traditional flat / pratha style bread, as well as French Baguette and French pastries served with a traditional mint tea. The place has two roof terraces which gives you the option of eating Alfresco and we did this on the two occasions that we cooked. Brahim was even a great help in putting together the BBQ for me to grill vegetables, which allowed us to make our traditional Transylvanian version of Eggplant Dip. The one small thing that is probably a downside to staying in a Riad is the close quarters and proximity you are to each other. Every small noise can be heard at night inside, including Brahim’s snoring. Overall however, as long as Brahim doesn’t raise his prices, Riad Dar Aby is great value, in the perfect location and at a very reasonable price. Based on these things, I would recommend Dar Aby as a first choice to anyone considering a traditional stay in Marrakech.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the rooms on the top level if you don't want to hear too much noise.
