This was our first trip to Morocco, and since we were planning 7 nights in Marrakech, finding just the right place to stay was very important. My husband and I were bringing our daughter and her two friends – all 16 years old – so safety was a key concern. I started with the Lonely Planet Guide to Marrakech to decide what district suited us best. The Mouassine district appealed to me as it sounded safe and also very centrally located to the souks and the Jemaa El Fna square. I read what the guidebook had to say about each riad in this district, and then checked the Trip Advisor reviews. One of the things that stood out about the Riad L’Orangeraie was that the owner, Cyril, personally responded to each and every review. That told me that top-notch customer service was high on his list.

Cyril was helpful right from the planning stages, arranging a transport from Casablanca to Marrakech (we took a direct flight from JFK – which I would recommend as it was only a 2 – 2 ½ hour ride on a new highway to get the Marrakech), as well as connecting me with other people for a cooking class and a desert tour. The driver was indeed waiting for us at the airport. It was extremely helpful to be accompanied to the riad, as the medina is difficult to maneuver for a first-time traveler. Our driver could only drive to outside the Bab Ksour gate, and from there someone took our luggage in a cart for a short, 5-minute walk to the riad door. We knew we had made the right choice from the moment we walked through the modest entrance into the sanctuary of the riad. We were ushered into a small sitting area, where we met Jamal and Aziz, and were brought mint tea and cookies. Luckily our rooms were ready (it was only mid-morning). We had the two suites on the ground floor. Each room had a queen size bed and a day bed that could be used as either a bed or a sofa. The rooms were interesting in that they had very high ceilings and were long and narrow. The only tricky part was space to put away clothing – there was a small hanging area and some shelves behind the bed, which worked fine.

Here is a short list of some of the details. 1) The beds were SUPER comfortable; 2) The water pressure in the shower was fantastic; 3) There is a safe in every room, which we used instead of locking the door to the suite; 4) hair dryers were provided (helpful since Morocco has different voltage from US); 5) little touches like umbrellas came in handy; 6) there was a dish of nuts, dried apricots and candies and a bottle of water in the room that was replenished daily; 7) They give you a local cell phone and encourage you to call at any time if you need help or get lost; 8) evening turn down service with lit candles in the room and bathroom.

It really felt like a home away from home. Breakfasts on the rooftop were delightful – always fresh squeezed orange juice, a French press for coffee, homemade yogurt, a smoothie that varied by the day, hard boiled eggs, and 3 types of breads (pancakes, French bread, brioche, coffee cake…) Sometimes we let the girls sleep in, and they never complained when we weren’t ready for breakfast until 11:00AM, or if we needed to get an early start. I would highly recommend eating at least one dinner in. The dinners were fantastic. We ate in twice – both times being seated indoors due to some wind and rain. Dinners included bread and olives, an array of delicious Moroccan salads, a tagine and dessert (typically fruit).

I can’t say enough about the staff. Everyone was very friendly. Most of our interactions were with Jamal, Aziz and Cyril. They were always eager to assist, answer questions, make dinner reservations etc. They were genuinely nice, always with a smile and a kind word. We got lots invaluable advice from Aziz regarding how to bargain in the souks, how much to pay for a taxi, and also on where to go for real Moroccan food. The location was fabulous – we only took a taxi once to visit the Jardin Majorelle. We easily walked to all the other sites that we wanted to see. We went out to the Jemaa El Fna square on many nights, which was only a 5-6 minute walk. We never felt uncomfortable, even late at night. Rather than giving out keys to the door, the custom at the riad was to ring the buzzer upon arriving back. This worked well as we never needed to think about keys.

The rooftop terrace has lovely spaces for relaxing and eating, and being one of the taller riads in the area, the views are spectacular. There is a living room area on the first floor with books and games. Keep in mind that the riads are restored homes, so the rooms all face the center courtyard. I used earplugs on one or two nights to help fall asleep when I was going to bed earlier than others. March was the perfect time to visit. It was cool in the evenings, but generally warm during the day (low 70’s), with a little bit of occasional rain for a day or two. Although there was a unit for AC and heat in the room, we never had to turn it on. I left with many fond memories and a wish to return one day.

Room Tip: The suites on the ground floor were very comfortable and convenient.

We had a most wonderful stay in this beautiful Riad this March.. It is an oasis of calm amid the hustle and bustle of the medina in marrakech. The hotel arranged transport from the airport which took all the stress away , and we were welcomed with mint tea on arrival. The staff were amazing and the best we have found anywhere. I must compliment Ishmeil, Jameel and Aziz on giving us such a fantastic time , our every need was thought of before we even asked. The weather was warm and we even used the pool twice. There is so much to see in Marrakech, but the hotel was so comfortable it was tempting to just lie and relax on the peaceful roof terrace. The breakfast on the roof terrace was really lovely , and the food delicious and varied . The food in the hotel in excellent and well woth staying in for. One night we had a Tangier, and we were taken to the butcher to choose meat and watch the herbs and spices being put into the pot, we then went to the fire in the Hamman to put our pot to cook. In the evening it was served to us with a wonderful selaction of vegetables and a great experience. My sister and I travelled with my mother , and we all wish to return , and also bring other family members to experience this place. Thank you!

Room Tip: All the rooms are lovely, And I would be happy in any one, but if you want extra room book a suit.

I've just returned from a three night stay at Riad l'Orangeraie in Marrakech and have to say it was great. From the moment we (my mum, sister and I) arrived, we were made to feel welcome and at home.
The staff are truly great and couldn't do more for us - and what's more they seem to genuinely enjoy it. We were also really impressed with Cyril, one of the French brothers who owns this Riad. His main aim is to ensure everyone is enjoying themselves and is seeing the very best of this wonderful city.
The food is also really good - from breakfast to dinner. In fact we felt that the riad's own kitchen served us the best dinner we had in Marrakech.
There are smarter (and more expensive) riads you can stay in, but this one is a real gem. It's authentic in every way and captures the magic of Marrakech. I am already looking forward to my next visit.

Room Tip: The biggest and most plush rooms are on the ground floor.

Just returned from five nights and was truly impressed from the moment we stepped inside it was like an oasis, so tranquil and impressive from the decor to the service. The location is superb and we stayed in the coriander suite which was beautiful. We was given a map of the district and a mobile phone if we got lost the food was superb and breakfast on the terrace was beautiful. On our last day we was asked if we would like prepared for us to take to the airport and on my birthday I received a scrumptious surprise birthday cake made by the chef Nadia. Thank you to the whole team who made my birthday week very special and for the fantastic hospitality.

Room Tip: We stayed in the coriander suite which is located on the ground floor opening to the courtyard. Bea...

We -my daughter and I- have just spent three truly fabulous nights in this wonderful Raid.
Our transport to and from the airport was arranged by Jameel the manager of l'Orangeraie, Upon our arrival we were given mint tea and pastries while Jameel took us through the map of the locality, advising us on the varying attractions and things to do.
We had booked to eat in house on our first night and we should have taken the advise of other reviewers and eaten there every night! It was fabulous food.
Our room was all that we expected and more, even the candle lighting fairies came in during the evening, it was lovely to come back at the end of the night to find the soft glow of candles lighting the way.
Each room has a small safe in which to leave your valuables etc so no worries there.
The location is brilliant, just a few paces from the Souks and in easy walking distance of the Square...Djemma el-Fna. Most of the other attractions are walk-able, if you go for taxis make sure you agree a price before setting off and like-wise with the Calesh drivers.

This has been my first time visiting Marrakesh and it was perfect, the staff are second to none and nothing was too much trouble...even arranging a visit to REAL locals Hammam, (this was not the 'do it your self' sort, you get a very intense scrub down and massage by a very lovely Moroccan woman who speaks no English but you develop an understanding and leave with a big hug, a feeling of cleanliness like never before and a massive smile)

My advise to anyone visiting for the first time is to go out, walk about and get totally lost, it's not a very big place and Jameel gives you a local phone to make use of. We met so many superbly friendly people, make sure you say Salaam/Bonjour to all the shop keepers etc that you come into contact with, everyone wants to help you and not all want money, but a couple of Dirhams for local info isn't much to pay.
.
Thank you so much to Jameel, Aziz and the rest of the staff -whose names I can't remember, sorry- you made our stay absolutely fabulous and we will return, insha'Allah
And may Valentino find his Valentine soon.

And now back to reality with a huge sigh. X

We stayed here for eight nights and couldn't be happier with our choice! The location is fantastic, and the Paprika room is the best!

From the moment we stepped into the riad we were warmly welcomed and offered mint tea and cookies. We were given a map and shown the best spots to see.

Breakfast can be described in one word: Amazing!! We usually had it on the rooftop terrace and it was the perfect start to the day!

The staff planned all of our day trips and gave us a ton of helpful advice. Special shout out to Jamal. He was so lovely and helpful, we were actually sad to say good bye to him!

This place has the best service and will make your experience a memorable one!

Room Tip: The Paprika room is the best. We stayed in another room for our last night, and although it was nic...

My daughter and I stayed here on our first trip to Marrakech. From the moment we arrived we felt we had found a haven amidst the bustle of the old city. Its location is fantastic, you can just walk almost everywhere in the old city. The staff looked after us so well, nothing was too much. Advice was always to hand and Jameel even organised a taxi and guided trek for a day in the Atlas Mountains. If you ate in the food was tasty and plentiful. The evening meal is served around the main courtyard. The first night there my daughter and I tried to leave the table after what we thought was a very substantial meal only to be stopped by the look of dismay on the waitress's face....we had only had the starter! The rooms were delightful - clean and cool and very comfortable. And the small plunge pool in the courtyard or the roof top terrace were welcome oases after a day's sightseeing and shopping. Just unforgettable.
