05 september, we arrived at the airport of Marrakech, we took a cab to the medina where one of Dar Soukaina's staff was waiting for us at the square of Riad Laarousse. First we were afraid when we saw the small streets that takes to the hotel, we could not imagine that w'll be at a small traditional heaven in a quiet less touristed neighbourhood designed with absolute authenticity in mind.
It is a very good place to stay.

We found Dar Soukaina in Alistair Sawday's 'Special Places to Stay' book and would agree that it is special. It was the first place that we stayed in Morocco and although we have travelled extensively in developing countries, we were glad to find Dara Soukaina, a haven of peace and quiet in the midst of the somewhat noisy and often chaotic old town of Marrakech.

We took a taxi from the airport (charged 160 Dhm but would suggest a price of 100 Dhm would be more the going rate) to Rue Laarousse and got dropped off out side the 'Pharmacie Populaire'. From there it is a short walk to Dar Soukaina but we needed to enlist the help of a couple of local children (for a few Dhms) to help us actually find the place.

We found the staff friendly and welcoming and couldn't have been more helpful. Our room was large, comfortable and cool enough not to require air-conditioning even though the day time temperatures were round about 30 centigrade. The whole of the place is full of character, from the central courtyard to the sitting areas on the roof.

Breakfast was special, sitting in the bright, sunny courtyard, enjoying fresh bread and pancakes with honey and jam. A perfect way to start a day in Marrakech.

Dar Soukaina is at the north end of the old town and so it is a walk of about 20 minutes to get to Djemaa el fna, that is if you don't get lost in the souks.

Dar Soukaina isn't the cheapest palce to stay in Marrakech but in our opinion was worth the money. Definitely a place we would recommend to other travellers.
