“artsy and hip”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 December 2011

With so many choices for places to stay in Marrakech, I ultimately chose to stay here because numerous friends had referred Riad El Fenn to me. It is in a good location. There are many interesting rooms to linger and relax in. I enjoyed the roof top terrace, and my room was spacious; but, I often felt there was much amiss. While the décor is indeed bohemian chic, it is tired, torn, and tattered. They are definitely needing to reupholster and buy new linens. While there is an artsy vibe, I felt like it was a hostel for adult bohemian wanna-bes; it seemed management and guests were all trying to put across a vibe of being cooler and hipper than each other. Which leads me to management. It seemed that their cool laidback attitude was actually lackadaisical. They seemed to be concerned with scheduling their social agendas and scoping out VIPs instead of attending to all their guests needs. When I would ask to arrange for a guide, directions, reservations, or even tea…I would need to remind them at least three times and then still it might have been forgotten.

Beautiful with lovely patios, a dreamy roof terrace and beautiful rooms. Lovely idea, terrible execution. Infuriating mix of good and bad fixtures, style over practical comfort (huge room, minute hanging closet, nowhere to unpack and leave bags). Trying too hard to be British hip, complete with tongue in cheek, without attention to detail. The manager warned us the shower might fill up ("Moroccan plumbing", giggle) but in fact it flooded. After two attempts to get them to fix it, we just took the plug out; plumbing was fine, fixture was not. How could he have been aware of the flooding but have failed to fix it. This was not an isolated case for our party. No TVs and phones is fine but if you offer wifi then at this price it should work in all or most of the hotel and your staff should know where it works (very good at gallic shrugs). Rooftop breakfast lacked; chairs, cutlery, hot food, drinkable coffee or tea...Staff were completely disinterested and poorly supervised. In spite of a full hotel, one person on dual duty as rooftop barman and doorman late at night- he disappeared and since there are no phones, no way to call for a drink. In different hands this could be a wonderful place.

Room Tip: Rooms are beautiful. It is quiet even when full. You can't go wrong. Plumbing is something els...

My friend and I stayed at El Fenn for four days and had the best time. the staff were amazing and there were so many cosy places to just sit and relax. you can be served a meal anywhere in the riad and at any time. the breakfast up on the top terrace was a great start to the day with the birds singing all around you. the riad is perfectly situated - we only had a ten minute walk to the souk/square and we were very happy to be walking past all the coachloads that had to be bussed in from miles away. The hotel also organised for a guide to show us some of the historic points in the area, worthwhile as he had such a wealth of knowledge which really added to the experience.
this riad is not a cheap option but if you want a relaxing (sooo relaxing) break in beautiful surroundings with friendly staff (including one of the best massages I've ever had) then try el Fenn. We couldn't recommend it enough. Definitely, we are going back.

Room Tip: Photos of all the rooms are online so just pick the one you like the look of! We staying in Room 16...

We came here for a weekend and had the most amazing time. The riad was pretty quiet - we barely saw another guest all weekend. We were given a beautiful suite including a magnificant bathroom with a bath made for 2! My husband was somewhat peturbed that there was no TV but there was an iPod docking station in the room. Lovely little touches like no phone so you press a buzzer to call for service; every morning a tray with tea and coffee is left outside your room to drink before breakfast; breakfast is served until midday so no having to get up really early.

There are lovely spa facilities and we were fortunate that all treatments were half price the weekend we were there. We both had amazing massages. There are 3 pools in the medina - a little chill but since it was 35 degrees in Marrakech when we were there it was very refreshing.

The roof terrace is amazing. Stunning views, lots of space, sun loungers, bar and dining area. We didn't actually have dinner in the riad but went up to the roof terrace to watch the sun set - very romantic!

Staff were very kind and considerate. They all spoke great English. The only slight problem we had was coming back to the riad at 4am after a night out and not being able to get an answer at the door. So if you're planning a night out just make sure that you alert the staff - and take a phone number with you so that you can call if you have any problems.

Would absolutely recommend this riad to anyone. It is stunning, in a great location, and well worth a visit.

This Riad is absolutely beautiful and I would defy anyone to find a problem here. It was absolutely breathtakingly stunning. When we arrived we were brought through this big door into a courtyard with orange trees and two wee tortoises. I only knew we were actually outside because I could hear the birds singing - we were brought a drink before we were shown to our rooms. The rooms are immaculate and so Moroccan - they really are the stuff that dreams are made of. The toiletries are exquisite. You walk around this Riad and you feel like nobody else is there but I am sure we were being watched (in a good way) as if we left our room and came back - it would have been turned down - or our dirty dishes would disappear as if my magic - there really is something magical about this place. When we arrived late at night we sat on the rooftop and listened to the call to prayer - you would never really have to leave the riad as you can watch and listen and smell everything from here. If you do tear yourself away to visit the souks - then be sure to pick up one of the beautiful baskets left by the door to carry your shopping in. All I can say is don't think twice about going to Riad El Fenn - it may be more costly at times than some of the other Riads but the experience will stay with you forever. Just think of it as your own private home as it feels like it - Enjoy - just don't tell me you're going - I would turn green with envy - even just for one more amazing El Fenn Breakfast!

I went to Marrakesh for a long weekend with friends and we really debated where to stay. Riad el fenn was a great choice - right on the edge of the medina so easy to get out for dinner and if you have had enough of the medina. We used the hotel's driver to take us to dinner each night and that made us feel very safe. He was great! The hotel was very relaxing, rooms are all different and large with enormous bathrooms (but little privacy!). The rooftop pool is excellent for sunset drinks and breakfast or a dip. The birds do wake you up chirping very early in the courtyard! We didnt have dinner at the hotel but breakfast was very good. All the staff were very accommodating. And try the Moroccan rose wines - all very good! I would recommend riad el fenn to anyone going to Marrakesh who likes a really nice small hotel but doesn't want to completely break the bank. But go to La Mamounia for drinks or dinner!

Amazing riad close to Jemma El Fna and pretty much everything else is either in walking distance or a short cab ride away! Beautiful rooms (We stayed in both 18 and 20) which are individually decorated and are each special in a unique way. Tea is brought to your room every morning and breakfast is included with your room rate and is delicious! Riad el Fenn exceeded my expectations in every way and the staff went out of their way to make sure my family and friend were comfortable! My only complaint is the concierge appeared to be less than attentive than many of the other hotels I have stayed at, and appeared very distracted at times. Despite this 1 minor complaint, I would recommend this riad to all of my friends and family and will definitely stay there again when I return to Marrakech!!

Room Tip: Look at pictures of the rooms on the riads website

It was 2002 when Vanessa Branson and Howell James walked into the almost ruined courtyard of one of Marrakech's formerly great private homes. Nearing dusk and with the sound of the muezzin's call to prayer echoing in the air, they instantly fell in love with the atmospheric house which was being sold with three smaller neighbouring homes. They soon realised that their holiday home was going to become so much more.At the time, only a handful of Marrakech's riads had been converted to small hotels and Vanessa and Howell knew they wanted to open a place offering something different - a home from home retreat that combined great food and service with the spirit of the building's past and a contemporary decorative twist. During a two-year renovation, local craftsman used traditional techniques to breathe new life into the building. Polished lime plastering was used in a rainbow of colours to create walls, baths and bed frames, original tiling was renovated and carved cedar ceilings restored. Retro furniture sourced from local flea markets was combined with one-off bespoke pieces to create a unique interior. ... more   less
