“Beautiful beyond description”
Reviewed 6 June 2012

I have set up a trip advisor account to recommend Riad El Fenn to fellow people. This riad is absolutely stunning, we were greeted in the shady, bird filled courtyard and spent the first 15 minutes of our stay absolutely speechless as we toured around the hotel.

We were luckily given an upgrade to one of the pool suites which for a young couple was amazing, the room itself was over three beautifully decorated floors with a large sunken, open plan bedroom/bathroom, and a private terrace and pool.

The location of the riad is great, although riad in just a 15minute walk from the souks the riad itself is tranquil and atmospheric.

All of our needs were looked after by the ample number of staff who were both polite and helpful. I would also like to say thank you so much to the entire management team who help us so much with our booking, and in particular Vanessa for letting us stay in her beautiful riad.

We did expect to enjoy Riad El Fenn, but our experience exceeded all expectations! Well designed and well managed, we loved every moment of our one week stay. Kudos to Alessandra, Karima and Megan in front office for their caring, thorough and patient attention to every guests questions and requests. Every staff member is welcoming, attentive, and gracious. El Fenn has an "abracadbra" aura where you feel that anything you wish for can be realized in the blink of an eye. The palms, pools and patios are magical - exactly the right balance between relaxed and glamorous. Massage services were excellent! Food was wonderful. This was our first of what undoubtedly be many visits to REF!

We took three day trips that were absolutely extraordinary - please feel free to reach out if you would like more information about the riad or excursions.

We stayed at the Riad el Fenn in April 2012. The decor of the riad is stunning, and I loved the mix of contemporary art with Moroccan pieces. Vanessa Branson has spared no expense decorating this lovely and tranquil space. The roof deck has fantastic views of Marrakech, and you could spend days relaxing in the pools and lounge areas of Riad el Fenn.

The location of the road is ideal for exploring Marrakech's bustling souks and markets. The riad arranged for us to have an afternoon guide, and Mustafa was excellent. We had dinner in the road restaurant one evening, and the food was good but not great. The hotel service is exceptional, and the staff will accommodate your every need and request. Mohammed deserves special recognition for his attentiveness in terms of room food/wine service.

The riad helped us to arrange our Sahara desert adventure as well. They recommended MoroDiscover (http://morodiscover.com/), and we corresponded with Houssaine, the owner, before our arrival to customize the perfect desert trip including spending the night under the stars in the Sahara. It was a once in a lifetime experience which I recommend if you have the time.

We stayed in suite 14 which is one the first floor near a pool with its own private outdoor lounge area. The room had stunning camel floors, a fire place, super high ceilings, a sunken tub in the room, and an enormous (I mean huge) bathroom. The room decor included stylish vintage finds mixed with contemporary Moroccan. We loved it!

I only wish I had been able to stay in Marrakech at the Riad el Fenn a few more days. The trip was magical. Enjoy!

Although its an expensive room we put beds in the entrance area for the kids and so the four of us shared the room. They were hidden behind a curtain ... Happy days. We swam in the heated glasses bottomed pool every day, exclusive to the room The scrambled eggs at breakfast were perfect and the food is excellent. However it's the general look and feel of this Riad that's so calming and elegant. There is a small movie house and we ordered room service and watched a movie great fun. I was of course tempted out and the location is fantastic. However, the hussle and bustle gets a bit much so you return at tea time to cake and tea. It was so good we decided to stay longer but had to move room it was still good but not exceptional. Room 19 is the business.

Room Tip: Room 19 is a must. Own pool and roof terrace.

We stayed at Riad el Fenn for 4 nights. The riad is absolutely stunning, very relaxed and peaceful. The roof top terrace provides amazing views of the Atlas mountains where breakfast is served, also perfect for an evening apperitive. Afternoon tea is served in the courtyard where you fight with the sparrows who nip in and out trying to steal the sweet treats. Great location for all sites.

2 gripes:
1/We arranged a trip to the Atlas mountains through the hotel however the driver turned out to be not very helpful and just took us to the location vs showing us interesting places along the way. On top of that when we got to Kasbah du Toubkal in the Atlas mountains, he told us to go with the guide (which we thought was included in the price) then we're told to cough up 400 Moroccan dirham at the very end which we were not happy with. Tip - it is very easy to walk to the top of the Kasbah by yourself. For lunch we popped into Kasbah Tamadot (owned by Richard Branson) which is a must on the way back to Marrakech. Lunch was very good.
2/The other point to note is the hotel didn't change the dinner menu for the duration of our stay which was a shame. However they did recommend a few good restaurants in the area.

Room Tip: Room 21 is massive, with views over both courtyards. The turquoise bathroom was amazing.

We stayed at Riad el Fenn for 4 nights, and had a wonderful time. The Riad is very laid back, and the staff really friendly. The food was of a very good standard; our only criticism is that the dinner menu was the same every evening. During our stay the hotel arranged a trip to the Kasbah du Toubkal in the Atlas mountains, which was a memorable experience, and was a complete contrast to the hurly burly of the souks.

Overall we loved ambience of Riad el Fenn and it's location in the Medina; we intend to return in the not too distant future.

We visited Riad El Fenn last month - what an amazing experience!
We were lucky to have one of the beautiful pool suites which was simply stunning - vast bathroom, leather floor and really tucked away in the most lovely part of the riad.
Outside the room there was a magnificent balcony area which overlooked the marble pool - it was bliss to sit here with a mint tea and listen to the birds.
Every morning tea and coffee were left outside your room which was a really nice touch.
Location is absolutely spot on too.
The main pool and our private pool were heated so enjoyable even in the cooler months.
I loved my holiday here - what a beautiful experience.

With 20 individually styled rooms and suites, a four-bedroom private riad, 3 swimming pools and its own hammam spa, El Fenn is a unique boutique hotel combining grandeur and historic architecture with hideaway nooks, terraces and gardens - making it the most peaceful place from which to enjoy Africa's most exotic city. Our story began with two friends on the hunt for a small riad to buy as a holiday home. It was 2002 when Vanessa Branson and Howell James walked into the almost ruined courtyard of one of Marrakech's formerly great private homes. Nearing dusk and with the sound of the muezzin's call to prayer echoing in the air, they instantly fell in love with the atmospheric house which was being sold with three smaller neighbouring homes. They soon realised that their holiday home was going to become so much more.At the time, only a handful of Marrakech's riads had been converted to small hotels and Vanessa and Howell knew they wanted to open a place offering something different - a home from home retreat that combined great food and service with the spirit of the building's past and a contemporary decorative twist. During a two-year renovation, local craftsman used traditional techniques to breathe new life into the building. Polished lime plastering was used in a rainbow of colours to create walls, baths and bed frames, original tiling was renovated and carved cedar ceilings restored. Retro furniture sourced from local flea markets was combined with one-off bespoke pieces to create a unique interior. ... more   less
