We decided to stay in the Medina for our visit to Marrakech but with so many hotels and riads to choose from it was almost a case of sticking a pin in. We weren't sure what to expect but, my goodness, did we pick well! Riad el Fenn is just lovely. We won't repeat what all the other good reviews have said about it, other than to confirm that after all the hustle and bustle of the main square and the souks (which we loved), it's wonderful to return to the cooling and calming atmosphere of el Fenn.
We arrived late morning feeling pretty ropey after a middle of the night start but soon felt restored after a cool drink and good lunch on the roof terrace, accompanied by soothing and beautiful music, interrupted only by the intoxicating call to prayer from the main square.
The staff are discreet and friendly, and always helpful. They're all wonderful, but special thanks go to Mohammed, who couldn't have been kinder when (very late one night) I discovered I'd lost my cigarette lighter.
Yes, the tortoises and birds are delightful, as are the lovely touches of early morning tea and coffee, and the delicious afternoon complementary tea and cakes/biscuits.
Riad el Fenn is in a brilliant location - minutes' walk from the main square - and we're looking forward to a return visit. By the way, we really don't understand an earlier comment about there being no locks on the doors. We couldn't have felt more secure.

It was 2002 when Vanessa Branson and Howell James walked into the almost ruined courtyard of one of Marrakech's formerly great private homes. Nearing dusk and with the sound of the muezzin's call to prayer echoing in the air, they instantly fell in love with the atmospheric house which was being sold with three smaller neighbouring homes. They soon realised that their holiday home was going to become so much more.At the time, only a handful of Marrakech's riads had been converted to small hotels and Vanessa and Howell knew they wanted to open a place offering something different - a home from home retreat that combined great food and service with the spirit of the building's past and a contemporary decorative twist. During a two-year renovation, local craftsman used traditional techniques to breathe new life into the building. Polished lime plastering was used in a rainbow of colours to create walls, baths and bed frames, original tiling was renovated and carved cedar ceilings restored. Retro furniture sourced from local flea markets was combined with one-off bespoke pieces to create a unique interior. ... more less
