“Steer well clear of this beautiful hotel - do not be fooled!”
Reviewed 19 July 2010

My friends and I were so excited and looking forward to staying at this beautiful hotel, alas we were to be sadly disappointed by our treatment and the extremely poor customer service we received when we arrived.
Yes, granted it is a very beautiful and luxurious hotel (although please be advised that it is not completely finished yet) but it's beauty really does not compensate for the rude and aggressive manager (and staff).
When we arrived, our rooms (we booked 2 double rooms) were not ready, and to be honest I don't think they had 2 rooms available, despite taking a 50% deposit when we booked months earlier. We were left waiting in the blazing sun for several hours with no apology or offer of drinks apart from the initial welcome beverage - not what you need when you have had to stay up all night to catch an early morning flight. Every time we enquired as to when our rooms would be ready we were fobbed off until literally 3 hours had passed and our patience had long since frazzled in the blazing heat.
To cut a long story short, when we eventually managed to speak to the manager, he was rude, intimidating and aggressive (please bare in mind we were 4 females) and we decided that even if they were to provide us with their two most luxurious suites that they had to offer we were no longer prepared to stay there.
Needless to say this hotel made a tidy sum of money out of us as the manager refused to refund our deposit, which was totally gutting. We also literally lost the majority our first day of our long weekend in Marrakech due this hostel wasting our precious time. Thankfully we were able to book in to another hotel called Es Saadi which really was the best thing that could have happened to us - whilst the rooms weren't quite as beautifully decorated as Palais Mehdi (don't get me wrong, they were still very nice), nothing was too much trouble for the staff and the atmosphere at Es Saadi was lovely. The Palais Mehdi would do very well to contact Hotel Es Saadi for some customer service training! Steer well clear and please learn from our awful experience.

This was the worst experience of a hotel that i have ever had. We booked this hotel as a special offer and were confident after reading the reviews that we would not be disappointed, we couldn't have been more wrong. We arrived at the hotel in the blazing heat and we told our rooms would be ready in an hour, we waited in the heat, for approximately 3 hours (each time we asked about our rooms we were ignored or told it would be another 30 minutes). Eventually when our room was ready they had booked us a suite (1 bedroom and a lounge) for 4 of us to share. We had booked 2 rooms and given a deposit of 345 euros. The Manager was extemely rude, at one point i thought he may hit my friend, they refused to give us 2 rooms, or our money back and we were told by the staff that this is a common occurance. As four women travelling togeher this was very intimidating, he shouted at us and laughed when we said we would contact the Police. We decided to leave as did not feel safe staying there. It was a horrible experience, the staff took advantage of our good nature, and then gave us 1 room when i had the email evidence that i booked 2 rooms. Do not let the beauty of the hotel fool you, the service is terrible, do not stay here. The staff speak little English, are rude, there is not a Reception desk, (making it difficult to contact the staff)). The "gym" has 3 pieces of equipment in it. Also is situated in the middle of no where.

We had a lovely stay at Palais Mehdi. The service was wonderful, and the hotel is absolutely beautiful. Rooms and common areas were decorated beautifully. The location is perfect or a quiet getaway, however if you want to be spending a lot of time in the city center, it requires a 10-15 minute taxi ride. Food at the hotel was very good, especially the breakfast. Staff were extremely helpful, and I would certainly go again.

We stayed here for 5 nights for my 40th birthday! The hotel is situated behind a wall and large doors, once opened you find a beautiful entrance area with fountains , rugs, pillars and you can see straight through to the fantastic pool area whereby there are double sun beds!

The beauty of this place is although it's a hotel there are only 17 suites so it feels like your house! The staff are wonderful and welcoming! And with a bit of effort and broken French we actually managed fine!

The food is lovely and on my birthday they organised for us to eat in a private dining area with candles and rose petal everywhere! Their attention to detail was fantastic!

If you are looking for 5 star luxury of a modern hotel then this is not for you however if you want to go somewhere which is quiet, totally relaxing and the staff make you feel totally special then I would highly recommend and my husband and I can't wait to go back again!!!

Very nice Hotel!! One of the best in my life. You feel really at home inside a charming and luxury villa surrounded by a large park with palms and roses. Great service, customer oriented, managed by a clever and gentle director. You can even choose which place to have breakfast and dinner. Quite clean and large double room with nice private garden. Position at Palmerai, perfect for a family looking for a quiet situation, 15 minutes far from Medina. I will come back as soon as possible. I do recommend it. Alessandro M. from Genoa/Italy

We thought we'd try Morocco for a long weekend as it surprised us that it's only 3 hours away from the UK and had great weather for the time we wanted to go. BA also had good flight times, morning arrivals and late departures (LHR anyway) so the timing was perfect. Coming in over the Atlas mountains is very impressive as its quite bizarre to see them snow covered when your about to land in a desert!

Upon arrival we were picked up by the hotel driver and proceeded on our 20-30 minutes drive from the Airport (depending on traffic). We arrived at the Palais Mehdi but as on so many occasions upon arrival at the front gates we thought oh no... but boy were we in for a shock! The front gates opened and hidden behind it was a fountained courtyard leading to an impressive Moroccan riad/villa all surrounded by a beautiful walled garden with palm tree's etc...

The grounds are large with a couple of beduin tents (a larger one for parties/evening meals by the looks of it) and a smaller one for you to use whenever you feel the need. There's also an abundance of scattered Moroccan furniture around the grounds for you to have your own little tranquil moment. The large pool is surrounded by comfortable steamers chairs, double sun bathing beds, lounging sofa's and chairs and the usual patio tables & chairs etc. There's also an outside bar and bbq area.

The Palais itself is large, roomy, well decorated in traditional style with lots of little rooms and corners for you to hide in and explore. We regularly felt we had the entire house and gardens to ourselves which was fantastic. We would regularly not see any other guest for hours on end but this was probably down to the time we went. That said, with only 10 rooms and large grounds/house this place would never feel cluttered.

The staff were extreemely friendly, respected our privacy and generally tended to stay out of our way unless you needed anything. They worked as a very good team as they seemed to know whenever we weren't in our room so they could get in and clean/turn down, etc... without disturbing us which demonstrated to me how well run the place is.

Food was prepared based on our needs as there's no set menu, this came as a bit of a surprise to start with but we very quickly got into the spirit of asking for whatever we wanted and hey presto there it was, cooked and presented well at a time and place we chose. Breakfast is a continental affair that was huge with pastries, toast, yogurts, cakes, pancakes, waffles, coffee, mint tea, etc and was again beautifully prepared and served wherever you wanted, it was also served up to 11am which again was another nice touch.

We stayed in the Sofia suite which has a four poster bed, sunken bath and led straight out onto the pool area where we regularly lounged and enjoyed a relaxing morning trying to get through the
breakfast. :) Decor is again traditional with each suite being unique.

I'd recommend you know a little french to be able to get the best out of Marrakech and I'd also recommend when you go into the city centre that you don't take anything you can't hide. You will get hassled, you will end up in large crowds as your wandering around the Djemaa el Fna and souks, you'll feel a lot more comfortable if you've not go to worry about and handbag or large camera bag, etc...

That said, great place to go and experience, seem like very friendly people and a Nik-nac shoppers paradise. The old city centre is chaos but very enjoyable if you like people watching, be careful to plan your nights out though if you want an alcoholic drink or two...

I rarely ever say this but I would be more than happy to go back to the Palais Mehdi and Marrakech and most probably will in the next few months.

with 3 girlfriends we decided to spend a long weekend in Marrakech and we booked at the Palais Mehdi. the experience has been unforgettable. since the first contacts with Ms. Ahlam, working at the booking department, everything has been extremely easy and satisfactory.

on our arrival at the airport, the driver was already waiting for us, and always with the smile on his mouth. when we reached the hotel, ms. Ahlam and a collegue were waiting for our arrival and welcomed us. we were shown our apartment, with two bedrooms, a nice common area, a small garden and 2 bathrooms.

everybody, from the waiter to the general manager, mr. Berrada, were incredibly professional, helpful and kind. quality of breakfast and food was high and we could easily perceive that the aim of the entire staff was to make us happy.

Palais Mehdi is located in the palmeraie, which is approximately 15 minutes' drive from the medina, but taxis are easy to find, and the atmosphere is much more relaxed, along with fresh air (in the medina pollution is quite high). we had lunch at the hotel and the food was good quality, ans we also tried the hammam, the massage and we got a henna tattoo (all in the hotel: again, the people in charge were kind and professional)

they have a big swimming pool, and a small, basic gym with a few machines and a ping pong table, and on the premises you can also play tennis.

we took advantage of the shuttle of the hotel and were driven around Marrakech (on the coast we visited Essaouira which we enjoyed) and then to a valley in the mountains at approximately 1 hour and a half from the hotel)

Marrakech is not a place where - at least according to my personal opinion - I would go in the near future, but I would honestly strongly suggest it to any friend asking for a place to stay...
thanks to everybody there: you made our stay an incredibly pleasant one!

  • Liked — professionalism and smile
  • Disliked — the room smelt a little bit humid when windows were closed for many hours
