We stayed at the Amani for 7 nights in May and were very impressed with our rooms, especially my sister's room which had a nice little balcony overlooking the pool. The rooms were spacious, nicely decorated and kept spotlessly clean throughout our stay. The rooftop terrace is very nice also, and the decor of the reading room on the ground floor.
The reception staff were very pleasant and somewhat helpful when we asked for information; although we did feel that they didn't have an expansive knowledge of the area. The location of the hotel was also good; just a short taxi ride from the Medina area and with some shops and restaurants within easy walking distance. Breakfast was not included in the price we paid for our rooms; it was a nice selection of breads and cakes served with coffee or tea, but more expensive than the local competition so we only ate breakfast on the lovely terrace twice during our stay.
Unfortunately we had an experience of bad service on our first evening when we went to the terrace and asked for 2 coca colas. We waited and waited, but after 20 minutes of waiting we went downstairs to the ground floor cafe. We were told that our cokes would arrive soon and so we went back up to the terrace again. After waiting a further 10 minutes or more I was so fed up that I went to get our cokes from the ground floor cafe myself and we drank these on my sister's balcony. Not a good start, but, as it was late and we'd only just arrived we decided to eat in the cafe, and the sandwiches we ordered were very nice, fresh and tasty.
Unfortunately our first night's experience in the cafe was not repeated the second time we decided to have a 'night in'. My Norwegian smoked salmon sandwich had been so nice the first time that we both ordered it the second time. However, this time there was hardly any filling in bread that was toasted so hard that we had trouble biting it, and the chips were stone cold.
The pool is very small, but despite its tiny size it looked extremely inviting. Unfortunately though, the water in it was far too cold to venture into so we never used it.
We asked for a late check-out on our last day since our flight home was late. We requested we be allowed to keep just one of the two rooms until 4p.m. but we were told there would be a charge for this. To be honest, we were quite disappointed as we'd been staying there for 7 nights and this would have been a nice thing to offer. We decided not to pay the charge and so left our rooms at the normal check-out time and at least they kept our bags safely behind reception until 5p.m., which we were grateful for.
All in all, this is a very pleasant hotel with nice rooms, kept spotlessly clean, but the pool and service do not meet the same standards.
