“tired and depressing”
Reviewed 20 August 2010

Oh dear. This was a last minute booking - so we went with open minds. Having read the previous reviews we were not expecting 5* luxury, but were hoping for a decent middle-of-the-road hotel. We were disappointed on every level.

We were greeted with news that we would be required to pay "local tax" (totalling £50 for the 5 night stay) despite the booking supposedly being inclusive of all taxes - be warned.

Good points - large rooms (a little tired), large pool, as good a location as you can get without being inside the Medina walls, building seems to have been built to 5* standard, but...

Bad points - had to take our own luggage to our room (up 2 flights of stairs because there was no electricity), corridor smelled of sewage, breakfast woeful, hotel services inc. food, drinks, extra services not advertised therefore you were left guessing what (if anything) was available, pool used as a water source for the local pigeons.

Overall the place felt like it was once a decent hotel but is now run down with a group of very disheartened staff to go with it.

This hotel is midway between the old and new centres of Marrakech - both of them are a moderate walk or short taxi ride away. Rooms were spacious and well-equipped but the lights were oddly dim making it unduly dark in the evenings. The hotel is attractively designed with a central atrium decorated in Moroccan style. Food was plentiful although not cheap (buffet lunch/dinner about 25 euros per head) and one of the two restauarnts seemed to be closed whilst we were there. Nice pool and garden. Service good.

My husband and I stayed at the hotel for 5 days, we both felt that the hotel was not a 5 * hotel and we expected more. The room were quite basic nothing special, the hotel did have a spa on site. I have a couple of treatments which were nice and worth it. My husband and I don't speak any french or arabic, however this wasn't a problem. The hotel food was not god at all, we stayed with the bread and breakfast option, however we will we hadn't. The breakfast was very basic and i did question their hygiene, (ants on the breakfast table). On one night my husband and i stayed in as it was 45degrees outside, and ordered room service. When the burger arrived it was uncooked and seriously put us off eating for a day or to. We did complain they ordered us another one, but by the time it arrived we lost our apepitete and they still charged us for it!

The location of the hotel is good, slap bang in the middle of the old and new area. If we do ever go back we won't be staying there. The taxi drivers will see you coming a mile, but after the first day we didn't pay more that 20 dirhams, except when going back to manchester. Money exchange don't do this at any british airport the exchange rate is much better when you get to morroco and exchange bureau is located within the airport at morrocco itself easy to find.

My partner and I arrived in Marrakech on a pumpy flight, we had to run to the arrival gate as it was raining heavily when we touched down...but the heat in the air and the obvious sense of being somewhere quite different was great!!!
Had a fantastic ride to the hotel in a taxi!!! Probably got ripped of a little for the fare....but who cares...
When you first step into the hotel you do get a sense of it's beautiful style, however I must say the rest does not stand up to a 5 Star hotel in my view.
Reception staff were ok and friendly enough, bags got brought to the room. which was also of a fair size and had a balcony....shame the view was nothing too special although we booked the superior room exactly for that. Shower also did not work...
We were there only for two nights and the location was ok. We did not have dinner in any of the restaurants but had lunch at the pool, and room service one night, both were nice to be fair.
Pool is ok and the pool service guy was very attentive and nice, shame that there were lots of pigaons doing "you know what's" around the pool.
Breakfast was only ok for a 5 star, not enough fresh fruit and yoghurt, cheese and ham were not covered and with the heat already in the morning it looked quite dry and turned up at the edges...I had fried eggs and bread, (I stay in a lot of good hotels through work and prev. holidays, therefore can say that this was substandard for 5 star)
I also tried the spa...Hammam with a traditional gammage...unfortunatley all I can say again is that it was ok...just ok, definitely not 5 star.
So as per my rating this hotel all in all was ok...i.e. average but certainly not 5 star....
Marrakech is great though and after our 2 nights there we still had 5 nights to go in the SOFITEL in Agadir....both of which are great and most definitely 5 star...

I don't normally write reviews but read some previous reviews of this hotel and decided to write one after reading some of the previous reviews. I spent 3 nights at this hotel in end of May with my husband and 3 year old child. The hotel is beautifully decorated in Moroccan style, got a large pool but lost sun towards the end of evening. There were enough lounges and the pool boy was in hand to hand out towels. The rooms are quite big and clean. The hotel is in an excellent location about 15-20 mins walk to the old town and 15 mins to the new town though you might not want to walk when it's about 35C. Taxis are really cheap about 20Dhs to new & old town.

We had breakfast every day at the hotel and couldn't find any fault. They had the usual breakfast buffet items. The amazing thing about this hotel is the staff they are very helpful and friendly even thought not everyone spoke English they did their best to help us. From chambermaids to pool staff every one is helpful.

Please be careful not to confuse this hotel with the Royal Mirage (not Deluxe). We spent 4 lovely nights at the deluxe, and then due to volcanic ash were put up for 3 extra nights at the "non-deluxe". The deluxe has only some 70 rooms but an enormous pool and is truly a deluxe hotel (people on hand to arrange your lounger, sunshade etc). Rooms are spacious and comfortable, and most of all it is an excellent location - just across the road from the city walls, and only 15 mins from centre of Gueliz.

We had no plans to eat evening meals in the hotel, as we were keen to try some of the wonderful restaurants that were all within 15-20 mins walk. But we did have the odd beer (cheaper than bars outside) and a lovely lunch by the pool.

All in all absolutely no complaints and excellent value for the money we paid.

I have read the reviews for this hotel before going and was a little worried about what to expect. Many people said that the staff is rude and the hotel should be 3 stars rather that 4. So initially we didn't know what to expect. We booked the hotel with the 50 % discount, so decided to go for it anyway. (with an open mind ) When we arrived the first impression was really good. The hotel is beautifully decorated, in a traditional Moroccan style, the swimming pool area in very nice and the room was quite big, clean with a flat screen tv, the bathroom had a separate shower and a bath. Each room also has a balcony. The hotel is very well located , very near the Medina , but also in a quiet area. (The riads are usually located in the middle of hectic location).
The staff are very nice, I don't know whether they replaced them or whether they re-trained them. The only thing I would say is that the staff dont really speak english and only speak french, may be thats why people said that thestaff are rude. Moroccan people are extremely nice and welcoming, however I have seen some UK visitors in the hotel being rude to the staff and not even looking at them when talking.
The hotell also had a beautiful spa with fitness centre and a hammam, which is very good as I found that the hammams in the town centre usually rip you off and do not provode good services.
Overall, I would definitely reccommend this hotel and I am glad e didnt change our booking, when reading the reviews before.
